Inaskingustowatchwithhimthroughthedarknessofthenight,heshowsushishumanityandcallsustostandwiththosewhosuffer.

Inwatchingandwaiting,westayforjustaslongaswecanbearinthegardenofGethsemane,watchingandwaitingwithJesusthroughthe

darknessofthenightinsacrificiallove,inthesilencewithallwhosuffer,withourGodwhosufferedandsufferswithusherebesideus.

Sometimesallwecandoiswaitinthesilence.Nowordscanmatchtheneed,thefear,thepain,thegrief,theemptiness.Inthesilence,

helplessinourwatching,awakeinourwaiting,holdinginourpresence,lovinginJesus’sstrengthandgrace.

Thecross,madefromStMary’sChristmastreewhenwecelebratedGodcomingtobewithusinhumanfrailty,issetherewithin‘thegarden’.
