Themes and Ideas- Apply
Theme: Clash of Cultures
Clash of Culture is shown in the real world. A way this is shown is by the introduction of the Asian culture to New Zealand society. New Zealand has had many Asian people enter the country. Due to many of these people entering the country, we are in a housing crisis due to too many people in the country.

Sound links to the theme of culture because it shows how the music Jess's culture listens to is different of other cultures.
Lighting links to the theme of romance because it sets the mode for the shot or scene and the lighting is just right to make a romantic looking scene.
Symbols links to football and Jess eg, the poster of David Beckham symbolises football and also links to Jess because David Beckham is Jess's idol.
Symbols again links to Jess because her Indian dress thing she wears to the wedding represents her. It also represents her culture and links to the theme clash of cultures.
Dialogue links to clash of cultures because you can clearly hear clearly how European people and Jess's family sound different from each other.

When Jess is bending the ball, there is all ways some Indian clothes which signifies Jess’s parents and elders. Jess always bends the ball around them to reach the goal, which in this case is her dream of becoming a professional football player.
Symbols-Analyse
1st Symbol-Football boots being cleaned
This is used to show Jess’s sadness for her dreams to be destroyed. She thinks as if her dreams have been washed away.

Relationship between Jess and Jules
Jess and Jules show us the theme of gender expectation. Gender expectation shows that Jess and Jules are surrounded by people who think that they must behave like their gender. Jules has gotten use to what people say but Jess isn’t as strong. But when Jess meet Jules, she feels more confident. She sees Jules as some sort of person who doesn’t care about their parents.
Themes and Ideas-Evaluate
Props: The use of footballs, goals, uniform and boots betray the theme of football to the viewer and communicate through the use of props that football is being played. It also communicates that the people playing football are enjoying playing it and are good at football too.
Camera: Camera is used to betray the theme clash of cultures. The camera angles and shots show how different Jess's family is compared to Jules's family or any of the other Europeans in the film. It shows how the two cultures are different especially when there are shots of what Jess and Jules wear around home and how different their expectations from their family are.
Sound: Sound is used in the film and betrays the theme of Jess's passion for football. This is shown when Jess and her mother and farther are arguing and the dialogue and the tone of their voices shows that no matter how mad Jess's parents are, Jess's passion for soccer is so strong that she will do anything to be able to play.
