3rd Annual Fall

Page 2: Benchmark 2015 Fall Bull & Heifer Sale

Dear Cattlemen and Friends:We are very pleased to welcome you to our

third annual Fall Bull and Heifer Sale. The bulls selling are born late summer and

fall resulting in more age and size in your bull upon turning out. These bulls come through winter as calves so do give up some weaning weight to our spring born calves who enjoy the green grass. Benchmark is the only pro-gram that we know of that offers such a dedi-cated fall program.

This year we again feature some extraor-dinary genetics unique to Benchmark and the industry.

The first seven lots feature sons and grandsons of G A R Prophet, one of the most popular bulls in the industry adding weaning weight, yearling weight, marbling, ribeye and carcass weight while being be-low average for birth weight and maternal calving ease, all attributes that are neces-sary in breeding profitable, functional cattle. Prophet is the sire of the two bulls that are tied for the number one marbling EPD on the Canadian Registry at +2.22.

Also featured are the 7 sons of Ten X who has caught the industry by storm with himself and several sons being widely used. Other bulls selling feature the genetics of Sitz Upward 307R, T C Aberdeen 759, and 5050.

We ask you to take special note of the calendar year heifer calves selling as Lots 35 thru Lot 44. The heifers represent several generations of Benchmark breeding and you will find them fancy and feminine. It has been several years since we have offered any females for sale, an opportunity to say the least. With each heifer selling, the buyer will be entitled to five straws of semen from either Benchmark Micah 247’13, G A R Prophet AO11, or Benchmark Foundation 213A. All three bulls are sired by the breeding giant G A R Prophet and represent very unique genetics to the Canadian scene. Micah 247’13 and AO11 are the # 1 bulls in all of Canada for the very important marbling trait at + 2.22, while Foundation is the Prophet son that topped our Fall Sale II last year at $ 41,000 to Basin Angus and Barragree Cattle. Help yourself to these industry leading genetics.

The cattle industry and in particular the cow-calf part of it has experienced record profitability. In the last five years calf prices have risen approximately 150% with 2014 prices at all time highs. We have experienced some moderation this fall, but remain opti-mistic with still low cow numbers. The eco-nomic climate we operate in is volatile, with price of feed, labour, fuel and other inputs ef-fecting our margins not to mention interest rates and exchange rates.

At Benchmark we continue to be as ef-ficient as possible and continue to strive to produce the most low cost and efficient cat-tle possible, while emphasizing calving ease and weaning weight along with post-wean-ing growth, feedlot performance and added carcass value with particular emphasis on reproductive efficiency. Breeding cattle is a life -long endeavour and we feel every tool available must be utilized. You will see lots of information provided on each animal. If you have questions do not hesitate to contact us. We feel the information provided is for your benefit and will help your cattle “mea-sure up”

At Benchmark , we leave no stone un-turned and wish to announce the construction of our bull development centre featuring the Grow Safe feed intake measurement system. Feed represents as much as 75% of all pro-duction costs and “actually” improving feed efficiency can mean huge savings for produc-ers or allow one to carry more cows on the same land base. Watch for our spring bull sale where we will feature a 100 bulls, each bull individually tested for residual feed in-take (RFI).

It is a true blessing to be involved in the cattle and beef business and we humbly ap-preciate each one of our valuable friends and customers. May you and yours have a very Blessed Christmas and a prosperous and healthy 2016.

Sincerely,

BenchmarkYour Carcass Source Angus

Elite Dams…The Canadian Elite Cow Report is an effort to identify superior cows in the Angus breed. Emphasis is placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving interval and above-average performance of the off spring. The Elite Cow Report requires a cow to have a minimum of five calves to determine her regularity of calving and ability to consistently produce calves with a superior weaning weight year after year. See page 39 for more details.

A bull that can be used on heifers but has lots of power so can be used on cows as well, great numbers all the way around. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for BW, YW, TM, CE REA and Marbling, in the top 2% for WW and top 3% for Milk. Buy them for what they will do for you. #10 Bull in the Canadian Registry for marbling

Heifer bull from a two-year-old Baron daughter. A Prophet son topped our 2014 Fall Sale going to Basin Angus and Barragree Cattle at $41,000. This guy ranks in the top 10% or better for BW, CE MCE, REA and Marbling. Checkout the REA and LMY on Lot 3.

Feast your eyes on this guy! Fabulous profile, thickness and depth of body. He comes from a first calf heifer and ranks as the #12 Bull on the Cdn Registry for Marbling. Prophet gets the job done with 150 sons selling a few days ago at Gardiners Fall Sale averaging $8,395 with a high of $50,000 on a bull to Southern Cattle Co. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for Marbling, Milk and MCE, in top 2% for YW, CE and top 3% for WW and CW. This is one to own!

Ranks in the top 5% or better for BW, WW, YW, TM, CE, Ribeye and Marbling and in the top 10% for Carcass and Fat. 241’14 ranks 19th of all bulls on the Cdn Registry for Marbling. We really like this tabulation. Next Step was used exclusively in Canada at Benchmark and left very moderate useful bulls and females. The dam on the bottom side is a donor cow at Benchmark with 19 calves to date. Note the 706 Cow is also dam of 5050 a Select Sires giant to say the least!

From a Catalyst two-year-old. If you are breeding some heifers next summer, take a look. Marbling, BW, Calving Ease and Maternal Calving Ease all in the top 1%. Be sure to check out the yield on all these bulls! Exceptional to say the least.

This is one cool dude. And you can figure as much from his pedigree. From a two-year-old heifer by Progress, who for years was and still is noted for his ability to add Carcass Merit to his offspring. 220’14 ranks in the top 1% for Marbling, YW, Milk, TM, CE and MCE. In the top 2% for BW and Ribeye and top 3% for CW as well as top 9% for Weaning. Terms of Sale announced sale day.

Three Quarter Brother to Lot 9. This guy does everything well ... Calving ease, Growth and End Product merit. Great Rib Eye measurement, 1.27 Sq. In. per 100lbs of body weight.

The natural born calf from the donor cow C F Everelda Entense 1903, she the dam of the $41,000 Benchmark Foundation 213A now at Basin and Barragree in Montana. This guy ranks in the top 10% or better for every measured trait except for milk at 15% and fat at 25%. Lots of muscle in these bulls evident by ribeye measure and calculated lean meat yield.

ABERDEEN was the high-selling bull at the 2007 TC Ranch Production Sale at $77,000 to Lindskov and Thiel. Aberdeen passes on his low birth weight, excellent early growth and great muscling resulting in high yielding cattle. Sons of Aberdeen have topped sales at Lindskov & Thiel, TC Ranch and Elingsons at $ 37,000, $ 30,000 and $ 25,000 respectively. Aberdeen has left us with very useful bulls that can be used on heifers and daughters that are feminine and productive. A son, Benchmark Aberdeen 188’12 has been used extensively at Benchmark and is represented by 7 sons in this sale. They are low birth weight bulls with great growth, balance and breed character and note the lean meat yield on these guys, it is amazing!

Full brother to Lot 15 via our embryo program and a maternal brother to Benchmark Predestined 8301 who has been a mainstay at Benchmark with 174 calves on the registry all by natural service. His daughters are very productive, moderate, functional females and sons have sold well to commercial and purebred breeders alike.

Lots 15 and 16 are full brothers to Benchmark Aberdeen 188’12 the sire of Lots 17 through 23. These two bulls can be used on heifers and will leave heifer calves that will make great mother cows.

“I have been buying bulls from Benchmark Angus for over 4 years now. They are very, very good! Whenever there has been an issue, Doug and Mike never argued, they just took care of it without question. We have become good friends over the years. I like what

they are doing with their genetics like feed conversion and longevity … top of the breeding line!”

5050 is a bull that does so many things right. He calves easy, his calves are long bodied and deep ribbed and grow fast. His offspring upon ultrasound or on the rail are the rigid right kind and his daughters, near 3,000 of them are fer-tile feminine females that bring in the heaviest calves. Beside all the above the trait you appre-ciate the most is his temperament with a docil-ity score at the very top. Lot 32 by 5050 from our donor Everelda cow is one to own. There is power in the blood!

Baseline was our pick at the Gardiner 2013 Fall Bull Sale. His mother by Objective is a valued donor for Nick Hull’s Black-stone Cattle, in Wisconsin. Note the granddam by the breed legend Grid Maker, he out of the highest dollar producing cow ever 2536. There is power in the genetics of these cattle. He has developed beyond our expectations with now 68 calves born at Benchmark. His Genomic Enhanced EPDs place him in the top 1% for WW, YW, Milk, TM, CE, MCE, Ribeye, CW, Marbling and Fat, while in the top 15% for Birth Weight. Is there another bull on the registry that can match Baseline? Please let us know, we’d like to be using him. Baseline not only leads in all measurable numerics but also is docile as can be and his first heifer calves surely look the part. Baseline arrived late in the season so we only had a few calves the fall of 2014 and we present two of the bull calves for your appraisal.

BenchmarkYour Carcass Source Beef

Out of the problems that BSE inflicted on the cattle industry, we be-gan our meat business, Benchmark Beef Inc. As you all remember, it was near impossible to get animals harvested unless you were a big player. We decided during that trying time period to harvest and merchandise our own beef. To begin with we fed and then merchandised our own purebred cattle that we didn’t sell as breeding stock and today have expanded to merchandising our bull customers’ cattle as well. Mike was able to “pedal meat’ restaurant to restaurant in the beginning to now being the exclusive supplier to certain restaurants in Lethbridge. We have now evolved to hav-ing our own retail meat shop. BBI employs our own full time meat cutter (butcher) and our retail and wholesale business continues to grow.

We are forever grateful to those local peo-ple who gave us a chance by trying our prod-uct. We count Mocha Cabana, Top’s Pizza, Pop’s Pub, Sisters, D’s Catering, Premium Sausage, Nut-ter’s Natural Foods, Alberta Meat & Grocery and our relationship with the baseball fraternity among others as our valued customers.

It is one thing to talk carcass cattle. It is another to actually practice, “Pasture to Plate.” It has not been easy but we have learned so much over the last years and the primary thing we learned is that there are cattle that make the grade and for sure there are cattle that don’t.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the most powerful genetic tool we have for selecting the best animals for your breeding program. EPDs are values that predict how the future progeny of an animal will perform relative to the progeny of other animals in the same breed.

EPDs: • allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value - that animal’s value as a parent• allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management • the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth• help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), Carcass (REA, FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency (CE, MCE, SC)• estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates. To evaluate seed stock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate optimums” works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will generally increase birth weight.  Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improved profitability and efficiency.

With all the data that comes with each bull, I’m sure at times it must be overwhelming. In order to use body composition EPDs of ultrasound data to their full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

Rib Fat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib - the location a carcass would be split into quarters in the cooler reported in inches. Rib fat is the main factor in the USDA Yield Grade Equation.

Ribeye aRea (Rea): An area measurement of the longissimus dorsi, or ribeye muscle - reported in square inches. This image tends to be the most difficult to collect and requires the most highly skilled interpreting technician. Both the rib fat and ribeye area measurements are taken from the same image. The REA score is reported as sq. in. per 100 lbs. of body weight.

Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal, reported in inches. The rump fat measurement coupled with the rib fat measurement, is used to determine more accurately the overall external body fat, enhancing the accuracy of predicting percent retail product (PRP). In most

cases, an animal will exhibit more fat over the rump than the rib due to physiological process of “laying on fat.” Therefore, more variation is often displayed in the rump fat measurements of a contemporary group than the rib fat. This image is highly repeatable and is the least difficult to collect or interpret.

intRamusculaR Fat (%imF): This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle (similar to marbling) and is reported in “%.” This measurement should be collected when cattle are maintaining a high level of nutrition. The field technician collects four images and the values generated by the interpreting software are averaged for an overall %IMF. The Angus Associations, both AAA and CAA have adopted the CUP (Centralized Ultrasound Processing) Program for Ultrasounding Carcass Data and are using this information for formulating Carcass EPDs. This is the 17th year we have provided ultrasound measurements as taken by certified technicians. We feel it is very important that you, our valued customer, know what is under the hide as that really does determine value. It has been determined through many studies that carcass traits are highly heritable and that feeding has only marginal effect on the resulting carcass - genetics determine carcass quality!
