On 11th January 2009, Benchen Monastery and several other monasteries requested Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche to transmit the novice and full-ordination vows for monks. Rinpoche compassionately complied and over 100 monks received the vows from Rinpoche at Benchen Monastery.

The Kagyu Monlam in Kathmandu, Nepal is mainly organized by the Karma Kagyu Welfare Committee. By merely hearing the word Kagyu Monlam, great aspirations and blessings spontaneously arise in every individual. This happens simply through the blessings and activity of HH 17th Karmapa Urgyen Drodul Trinley Dorje.

Initially, only a few Karma Kagyu monasteries were involved in organizing the Kagyu Monlam in Kathmandu. However to date, there are over 13 Karma Kagyu monasteries on the committee. It was a decision made in the early days that every monastery on the committee would take a turn in organizing the Kagyu Monlam.

This year, Benchen Monastery took full responsibility in organizing this event which was held on the 11th to 14th day of the 1st lunar month. The elaborate shrine was solely prepared by the shrine-masters of Benchen Monastery.

Kagyu Monlam usually takes three days but this time, Kagyu Monlam organizer, Lama Karma Chodak requested it to be extended for an extra day. A special tshog offering was held on this fourth day.

It was a wonderful opportunity for Benchen Monastery to organize such a grand event. Although we tried our level best, we feel we could have done better ! We look forward to the next time we can organize such an event in order to ful ll the wishes of our Root Gurus for the bene t of all sentient beings without exception.

THE PASSING OF LAMA RABSALLama Rabsal passed away on 21st March during the 2009 Spring Course in Kathmandu. Lama Rabsal was Rinpoche’s cousin brother. They had been companions since early childhood and Lama Rabsal had been inseparable from Rinpoche right up to the time of Lama’s Parinirvana, serving as his attendant from their time in Tibet. Lama had been unwell for sometime. However his condition seemed to improve a little and he was able to move around with the help of his attendant.

On that day, in the midst of the Spring Course, his attendant had gone to offer Lama Rabsal his morning cup of tea at around 7 o’clock. Lama was doing his daily prayers and was in the middle of chanting the Long Life Sutra when he started having breathing dif culty at about 8.00am. His attendant, ran to get Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche. Rinpoche came to Lama Rabsal and reassured him that

Rinpoche was right there with him. Rinpoche arrived and talked to Lama for a few moments and then reached out to touch Lama on his head, and felt that it was almost Lama Rabsal’s nal moment.

Meanwhile the Benchen staff had requested for a Doctor to come to attend to Lama Rabsal and they were undecided whether or not to take him to the hospital. Rinpoche told them that there would not be much bene t to either have the Doctor come or to bring Lama Rabsal to the hospital. Even before the Doctor arrived, at 8:45 am, Rinpoche told the people around, “that’s it, it is all over”. Rinpoche asked for a yellow Dharma robe (choego) which was put around Lama and a Gampopa hat was also worn on him. Sometime just before Lama Rabsal passed into Parinirvana, Rinpoche kept repeating the names of the Lineage Gurus. He especially repeated the names of the precious Root Gurus, HH Karmapa and Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. At that moment, Lama Rabsal drew his nal breath.

From his sitting position, Lama Rabsal’s body straightened and his head lifted. Meanwhile Rinpoche continued to recite the names of the Root Gurus. Rinpoche explained that Lama Rabsal was in Clear Light Meditation (thugdam). Lama Rabsal remained in meditation for three and a half days. During this time the colour of Lama’s body remained unchanged and there was no smell or anything unpleasant emanating from him. Lama’s peaceful appearance seemed even healthier than when he was alive.

On the second day, Rinpoche allowed the participants from the Spring Course, monks from the Monastery and other people to pay their respects, offer homage and khatags to Lama Rabsal.

On the fth day, Lama Rabsal’s body was washed and put into a special funerary box and brought up to the Tara shrine hall where special prayers were held. Lama’s body remained in the shrine hall for three days. On 27th March, the eighth day of Lama Rabsal’s Parinirvana, the cremation ground was prepared in the courtyard in front of the Monastery according to Rinpoche’s speci cation.

at the cremation. HE Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche personally attended and led his monks for the puja. Tulku Ngawang Chodak led the Lamas and monks from Pullahari Monastery and the Dorje Lopon and Lamas represented Thrangu Rinpoche’s Monastery. Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche himself led part of the puja along with the Dorje Lopon and monks from Benchen Monastery. Different pujas were done simultaneously in the four directions. Pullahari Monastery performed the Amitabha Puja, Thrangu Rinpoche’s Monastery performed the Amogasiddhi Puja, HE Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and his monks performed the Vajrasattva Puja. and the Benchen monks did the Sattva Vid Vairocana Puja. At the end of the cremation, Rinpoche thanked all the Rinpoches, Lamas and monks for participating in the prayers for Lama Rabsal. Pujas continued for 49 days. At the same time, Rinpoche requested for different pujas and prayers at several monasteries to be dedicated to his cousin brother.

Lama’s passing was a wonderful opportunity for everyone because he con rmed the importance of being a good practitioner and having unwavering devotion to one’s Guru.

Shortly after the start of this event, HH 17th Karmapa ordered Rinpoche to Gyuto Monastery to see him. Although Rinpoche spent a short time there in Gyuto Monastery, he said that it was a very inspiring week and he had a wonderful time.

In Rinpoche’s absence, the mantra recitation was led by the Vajra Master of Benchen Monastery, Lamas and monks. A big congregation of lay people joined in the recitation.

The 100 million mantras were accumulated by about 800 participants in just nine days ! During this time, lunch and tea were served by the Monastery. The programme concluded with a puja and a Karma Pakshi tsog offering. After this, a group of very young monks stood in the middle of the shrine hall where the participants were already seated and chanted the Lamp Aspiration prayer. In their very pure melodious voices, they chanted the prayer three times and then Lamas and monks led everybody in the lamp procession around the monastery, chanting the Lamp Aspiration prayer together.

This event was dedicated to the long life of all the masters of different schools, especially to HH Dalai Lama, HH Gyalwa Karmapa and our precious masters Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche and for World peace.

KYABJE TENGA RINPOCHE’S VISIT TO THE EUROPEAN CENTRES 2009

In spite of his age and physical condition, Rinpoche kindly accepted most of the invitations to the European Centres.

SPAINThe rst stop of Rinpoche’s tour this year started from Dag Shang Kagyu in Spain on 18th June. This is an old Shangpa Kagyu centre established by the previous HE Kalu Rinpoche. The centre is now led by Lama Drubgyu and other Lamas.

Page 18: Benchen Periodic

Journal 2009 to May 2010 (17)

It has both the Naro Ling and the Nigu Ling retreat centres. The rst batch of the three year retreat is currently in session. Kyabje

Tenga Rinpoche had conferred the complete Shangpa Kagyu cycle of empowerments to the retreatants during his previous visits to Dag Shang Kagyu. The students in the centre and the retreatants received initiations and instructions from Rinpoche during this short visit.

PORTUGALKyabje Tenga Rinpoche then visited Lisbon, the capital of Portugal upon the kind invitation of Tulku Pema Wangyal Rinpoche. For Rinpoche’s convenience and comfort, both Tulku Pema Wangyal

Rinpoche and HE Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche hosted Rinpoche in a hotel where the teachings were held. This is the same hotel where HH Dalai Lama stayed on an earlier visit to Lisbon. Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche was very appreciative of both Rinpoches’ thoughtfulness and kindness and he remarked that he felt like he was on a holiday!

FRANCEFrom Portugal, Rinpoche took a ight to France. His rst stop was

Chanteloube where he continued the empowerment of Kagyu Ngadzod on the Five Great Precious Treasures compiled by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, at the centre of Tulku Pema Wangyal Rinpoche.

Rinpoche then visited HH Karmapa’s centre, Tendar Ling where he conferred the Medicine Buddha empowerment to the students. Rinpoche visited this centre of the previous Pawo Rinpoche upon the invitation of the committee members. This centre in Dordogne is a beautiful and a spiritually inspiring place where the previous Pawo Rinpoche had spent a lot of his time. The energy and blessings can still be felt today.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche thanked all the people for maintaining the centre with such sincere devotion and effort.

Rinpoche then travelled by road to Lerab Ling, the main seat of HE Sogyal Rinpoche. HE Sogyal Rinpoche extended his invitation to Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche when he visited Rinpoche in Kathmandu. He told Rinpoche that, the 400 plus three year retreatants in Lerab Ling would bene t greatly from receiving teachings from Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche.

Rinpoche gave two sessions of teachings on the importance of the practice of Bodhicitta. Rinpoche emphasised that the retreatants should concentrate on this practice. During the teachings, Rinpoche expressed his great appreciation to HE Sogyal Rinpoche for his Dharma activities which bene t all sentient beings.

Lerab Ling is a lovely place with a traditionally designed monastery. HH Dalai Lama and many other great teachers have visited this centre previously.

From Lerab Ling, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche went on to Vajradhara Ling in Normandy and Kagyu Dzong in Paris. Lama Karma Gyurme is responsible for both these centres. Stopping by the site which has been blessed for the construction of a centre previously, Rinpoche told Lama and the committee members that since there is an intention to build a centre, the building should look like a temple. He urged them to seriously consider this because a temple that has a traditional shape will simply represent a temple. In turn, a temple signi es that it is a place solely for Dharma practice and nothing else. Rinpoche then blessed the newly-bought house which is near the centre.

DENMARKKyabje Tenga Rinpoche travelled to Copenhagen, to Sangye Tashi Ling which is HH Karmapa’s centre. Rinpoche always nds it very comfortable to return to Copenhagen where he spent a lot of time in the late 1970s. He was very happy to meet up again with old Dharma friends and disciples.

Sangye Tashi Ling, Copenhagen

During his previous visits, Rinpoche encouraged the committee members to have a so-called permanent place which they can call a centre, whatever the size. This is so they can accommodate a Resident Lama to perform regular Dharma

activities for the bene t of the practitioners. During this trip, Rinpoche was very pleased that his wish has become a reality and he thanked the committee members and everybody who made this possible.

From Copenhagen, Rinpoche went to Benchen Karma Geleg Dardje Ling in Odense. Rinpoche spent two days there with the Benchen community.

Benchen Karma Geleg DardjeLing, Odense

GERMANY AND AUSTRIAAfter Denmark, Rinpoche went to Germany where he travelled extensively making his way to many Karma Kagyu centres. He visited Thegsum Tashi Choling in Hamburg, Karma Thegchen Cho Ling in Bremen, Rainbow Cave Buddhist Centre in Wolfstein, Karma Chang Chub Chopel Ling in Heidelberg, Karma Lodro Ling in Nurtingen, Benchen Tara Group and Tibet Kailash House in Freiburg, Benchen Lhundrup Shenphen Ling in VS-Villingen and Karma Dhagpo Gyurme Ling in Munich.

After the Summer Course in Belgium, Rinpoche went on to Poland.

Rinpoche completed his European tour in Maitreya Institut in Gutenstein, Austria.

At every centre, Rinpoche ful lled the wishes of the Dharma practitioners, giving teachings, empowerments, instructions, advice and blessings. Whether meeting Rinpoche for the rst time or having met him before, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche has remarkably touched the lives of all who meet him.

2009 SUMMER COURSE AND THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF BENCHEN PHUNTSOK

LING, BELGIUMKyabje Tenga Rinpoche arrived at Benchen Phuntsok Ling on 25th July 2009, a few days before the start of the Summer Course. He was very pleased to see that the Buddha statue he had presented was completed.

The statue was made in Kathmandu, Nepal but Rinpoche’s disciples and his attendants added the nishing touches by polishing it and applying gold leaves on it when it arrived in Belgium. The lling of mantras were done by Lama Ngawang, the Resident Lama and Lama Geleg.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche’s birthday was celebrated on the very day he arrived and in front of the Buddha statue, Rinpoche’s students made body, speech , mind and mandala offerings to Rinpoche.

Improvements and extension to the physical structure of the main building were some positive changes at the Summer Course this year.Through the kindness and generosity of the sponsors, there is now proper roo ng on half the building and an extension to the right side of the building has increased the sitting area. This proved to be very helpful in the way that students can sit more

comfortably. The committee and volunteers have made it possible for both Rinpoches to come directly from their rooms through the building into the shrine hall. Previously, both Rinpoches had to enter the shrine hall from their rooms by making a big detour, often exposed to the weather elements. This is extremely helpful and timely as it saves Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche from having to walk too much.

The other excellent piece of news is that an old disciple of Rinpoche kindly made possible the purchase of a house including the big piece of land it occupies. Rinpoche has named this house Shenphen Ling. As the land is connected to the existing BPL, there is more space available for camping and vehicle parking. Shenphen Ling will be used for accommodation and it is well-suited for Dharma brothers and sisters wishing to do short retreats since it is in such close proximity to the main building.

The construction of Sangha House is progressing well. The Children’s Corner has been relocated to the ground oor which is both a little warmer and more spacious. Parents have expressed their appreciation to the organisers for this.

At present, the rst and second oors are used as open dormitories but when the Sangha House is ready, they will be turned into rooms.

The committee members have put their heart and soul into the construction of the Sangha House. They are trying their utmost

best to complete this project soon so it can be used for Dharma courses conducted by Resident Lamas and other teachers. The Sangha house will also be used for retreats.

The ever compassionate Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche bestowed the full major empowerment of Cakrasamvara, complete with sand mandala. All the participants felt so blessed and fortunate at this special occasion.

Rinpoche then announced the visit of HH 17th Karmapa, Urgyen Drodul Trinley Dorje to Europe in the summer of 2010. Even though HH Karmapa’s visit to BPL will be very brief, there were expressions of joy in the air! It would be memorable and of great blessing to host HH Karmapa, and Rinpoche invited everyone to be present at that time.

This year (2009) marks the 10th anniversary of BPL. A committee was formed to organise the celebration to commemorate the occasion. Their hard work and fantastic organisational skills were evident in the success of the event. The celebration began in the late afternoon. Rinpoche and the committee members received the Vice-Mayor Ms Moni Knaus and thanked her for graciously accepting their invitation.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche marked the start of the programme with a short speech. He then gave a brief explanation on the signi cance of the Lamp Aspiration Prayer. This was followed by the prayer being sung by some of Rinpoche’s attendants.

All those present were treated to a demonstration of different Tibetan Dances performed by Rinpoche’s attendants and some Tibetans living in France. The spectrum of colours was a feast for the eyes! There were also instrumental performances by our Dharma brothers and sisters and a delightful ower dance by the young disciples of the Benchen community.

It was in all, an enriching afternoon where a variety of cultural performances from the east and west came together in BPL. The effort and time put in by the organisers and performers are to be lauded.

The Summer Course concluded in an auspicious way, with the Resident Lamas of the Benchen Centres, committee members of BPL and students making body, speech and mind and mandala offering to the thrones of H.H. Dalai Lama, H.H. Karmapa, Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and to Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche.

As always, the annual Summer Course is a time for all disciples to come together to receive teachings, empowerments and instructions from Rinpoche. It is also a great place for an annual reunion of sorts. This is evident in the faces of the younger ones who freely express their happiness in meeting old friends. As with every meeting, there will be a parting and again at the end of this Summer Course, friends bid farewell until they meet again next year !

BENCHEN DRUBDE OSAL LING, POLAND

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche was invited to Benchen Karma Kamtsang Ling in Poland in September 2009. This centre in Grabnik is one of the major centres of Benchen Monastery and it is under the guidance of both Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche. The centre is led by Lama Rinchen and the committee members. This visit by Rinpoche was very auspicious as it marked the commencement of the rst Benchen three year retreat in the west.

The Resident Lama, disciples and sponsors worked tirelessly to complete the Retreat Centre. All the would be retreatants added the nal touches to the building. They worked so effortlessly to build the Retreat Centre that one would not be wrong to comment that they were the real holders of the Milarepa Lineage ! All participants received advice, empowerments, oral transmissions and instructions from Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche before they entered retreat. He reminded them that they were very fortunate to have

this opportunity to do a retreat in this lifetime. A few days before the start of the retreat, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche conferred Tshang Chod Genyen (full celibacy vows) on the participants so that they are allowed to wear the Dharma robes. They will keep these vows for the duration of the three year retreat.

Sometime before Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche arrived, he sent Umze Gyurme to train the participants in ritual ceremonies, torma making and music. It was very hard work, but also an enjoyable time for all the participants in that last month when they had to combine building construction with study, but they all did very well.

On 7th September 2009, the commencement day of the retreat, parents, spouses and other relatives came to wish their beloved well. Some Vietnamese who stay in Poland came in two buses to witness the participants entering retreat and to also wish them well. It was inspiring to witness the determination displayed by the retreatants when the time came for them to bid farewell to their loved ones just before the main entrance of the Retreat Centre was sealed to mark the start of the three year retreat.

Rinpoche was invited to both main shrine halls of the Retreat Centre where the retreatants made body, speech, mind and mandala offerings.

Tea and saffron rice were served after that. Rinpoche advised all the retreatants that many situations may arise from living in such a close community. However, they should try to overcome these situations, reminding themselves of their good fortune to have this opportunity to be in a three year retreat. Rinpoche then blessed all the rooms. During the public teaching session, Rinpoche thanked all who made this Retreat Centre a reality and in appreciation, he presented them each with a gift.

CHILDREN’S DAY

Children’s Day was celebrated on 14th September 2009. The Benchen Primary School teachers organised this event.

Benchen Khenpo giving a speech Benchen Primary School students with senior monks

There was a urry of excitement as the young monks rushed around to proudly put up their artwork. There was a splash of colours in every classroom which was festively decorated !

Each teacher delivered a short speech and the school invited Khenpo Tsondrue and the staff of Benchen Monastery to join in the celebration. The students presented many items and some sang poems of which many were self-compositions. They all did very well!

Finally, Khenpo Tsondrue was invited to say a few words. He told the students that they have this opportunity to attend a secular school curriculum simply through the kindness of both our precious Rinpoches. He reminded them to work hard so that they can share their knowledge and later serve the Monastery for the bene t of others, especially the new-comers in the future. The monks are doing well in their studies in the primary school and continue to progress in their education under the able tutelage of the Benchen Primary School teachers.

On behalf of Benchen Monastery, we would like to thank the sponsors for giving the monks a chance to receive the Nepali school curriculum.

It is essential in the Vajrayana tradition for practitioners to receive empowerments and transmissions for uninterrupted lineage blessings. To this end, Lama Thong from Malaysia and others from the Benchen community requested Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche to bestow the whole cycle of the Shangpa Kagyu empowerment. Rinpoche through his great compassion accepted the request. As his link to the Shangpa Kagyu lineage is deeply rooted, Rinpoche felt it was his duty and responsibility to restore and keep this tradition ourishing.

The Shangpa Kagyu lineage was established in the 11th century by Khedrub Kyungpo Naljor. The teachings of the Shangpa lineage are known as “The Five Golden Dharmas of the Shangpa Kagyu”. They are likened to a tree with its roots, trunk, branches, owers and fruits.

The Previous Tenga Rinpoche, Tenzin Chogyal was a close disciple of The Great Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye. He did a traditional three year retreat according to the Shangpa Kagyu lineage under the Great Kongtrul’s guidance.

He stayed on as Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye’s attendant after this, acting as the Retreat Master for the three year retreatants. In the next three years he represented the Great Kongtrul in his absence. It was during these nine years at Tsandra Rinchen Drak, the main seat of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye in Derge, that the 2nd Tenga Rinpoche’s strong connection to this lineage was formed.

Tenga Rinpoche later returned to Benchen Monastery. There, he introduced the Shangpa Kagyu practices and established a retreat centre for the Six Doctrines of Niguma. In his lifetime, he also established the Naro and Kunrik retreat centres.

The present Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche continues to uphold the Golden Dharma lineage of the Shangpa Kagyu tradition. He received all the Shangpa Kagyu empowerments in Rumtek Monastery in the early 1970s from the previous HE Kalu Rinpoche, who was the main Shangpa Kagyu lineage holder.

The empowerment commenced at Benchen Monastery on 19th October 2009. Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche requested the Retreat Master of Pullahari, Drupon Lama Yargye to give the oral transmissions (lung) of the texts. This was done in two sessions in the mornings. Rinpoche meanwhile did preparation for the empowerments which he conferred in the afternoons. There were about 900 participants-monks from Benchen Monastery, monks and nuns from the other monasteries, western students and local devotees. The empowerment concluded successfully on 31st October, with the Long Life empowerment of Niguma and Dakini Sukhasidhi.

NIGU RETREAT CENTRE IN PHARPING

In order to provide the monks of Benchen Monastery and other students a chance to learn and continue the Shangpa Kagyu tradition, the Benchen Nigu Retreat Centre is being built. It is located next to the existing Benchen Drubde Osal Ling Retreat Centre in Pharping which focuses on The Six Doctrines of Naropa.

Since the publication of the last Journal, the Nigu Retreat Centre is fast becoming a reality. Building is in rapid progress because Rinpoche wants it to be completed to accommodate the rst batch of retreatants soonest.

PREPARATION FOR KAGYU MONLAM IN BODHGAYA, INDIA

Khenpo Gawang from the Nalanda Institute, Rumtek Monastery and Dharma Disciplinarian Choejung of Rumtek Monastery came on the their rounds to the Kagyu Monasteries. They were asked to come ahead of the Kagyu Monlam 2009 by HH 17th Karmapa to check on the discipline in the monasteries, for example, the correct way to wear monks’ robes and their general conduct.

They were very kind and encouraged our monks to continue to do their best. Khenpo-la gave a short

speech on the last morning of their brief visit to Benchen Monastery, on 28th and 29th November 2009 stressing the importance of discipline in a monastery. He urged the monks to uphold strict discipline at all times and not just during the Kagyu Monlam.

HH DRIKUNG KYABGON RINPOCHE’S MEMORABLE VISIT TO BENCHEN MONASTERY

HH Drikung Kyabgon Rinpoche was near Boudhanath presiding over the consecration and opening ceremony of his monastery. In conjunction with this, he gave the Kagyu Ngadzod cycle of empowerments. Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche also attended some part of this empowerment. Rinpoche took the opportunity to invite HH Drikung Kyabgon Rinpoche to Benchen Monastery. Despite his terribly tight schedule, HH Drikung Kyabgon Rinpoche came to Benchen Monastery on 30th November 2009, where he bestowed the Long Life empowerment of Machig Drupe Gyalmo which Mahasiddha Rechungpa received from Tipupa Drime Shenyen and conferred blessings on the monks and the people in the vicinity.

In the late afternoon, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche and the retreatants started the puja to signify the closing of the door of the Retreat Centre.

After this, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche went back into the Retreat Centre to give the retreatants further instructions.

Very soon after this, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche had to leave for Singapore to seek treatment for poor blood circulation in his right leg.

In the meantime, the retreatants were engaged in the practice of Vajrakilaya and the ordinary and extraordinary preliminary practices.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche returned to the Monastery on 23rd January 2010 from Singapore, having undergone a very successful operation. During this time, many Rinpoches from Kathmandu valley and elsewhere paid Rinpoche a courtesy call to enquire about his health as well as to wish him well. Mingyur Rinpoche, Choknyi Rinpoche, Choki Nyima Rinpoche, Chokling Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, Khenchen Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche, Tarig Rinpoche from a Sakya Monastery and Serkong Rinpoche from a Gelugpa Monastery were among the Rinpoches who visited. Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche also received many representatives from other monasteries who had all come to convey their best and to welcome Rinpoche home.

He spent a few days in the Monastery before returning to the Retreat Centre where he took a much needed rest before commencing the

empowerments and instructions mainly on the various Guru Yoga practices. Rinpoche spent over twenty days in the Retreat Centre in Pharping.

On 1st March 2010, Tulku Pema Wangyal Rinppoche and HE Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche paid Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche a courtesy call at the Retreat Centre. They had a long conversation after which both Rinpoches visited the main shrine hall. The Lamas requested both Rinpoches to give a short Dharma discourse so that they could make strong Dharmic connections with both Rinpoches.

In Tulku Pema Wangyal’s speech, he clearly pointed out the importance of putting the words of the precious Lamas into practice. He reminded the Lamas of their good fortune to have the chance to practise under the guidance of such realised Vajra Masters like our Rinpoches. He appealed to them to use their time in the most bene cial way.

This time, there are fteen retreatants out of whom four are from two other Karma Kagyu Monasteries. Two monks are from Legshe Ling Shedra and the other two are from Samten Ling Monastery. Both these monasteries are in the vicinity of the Swayambhunath Stupa.

The monks related their joy in the experience of being in an event led by HH 17th Karmapa. The great blessings helped them focus on their studies. Most of all, they enjoyed debating with monks from other Shedra and they learned a lot through exchange of knowledge and discussions in that one month.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche was at that time in Singapore for his medical procedure. HH 17th Karmapa told all the monks at the Winter Dharma Course that everyone should pray for the long life and quick recovery of Rinpoche.

It was a great opportunity for the Benchen Shedra monks to participate once again in Karme Gunchoe

(Winter Dharma Course) which started on 4th December 2009 in Tergar Monastery in Bodhgaya, India, together with monks from many other Karma Kagyu Shedra.

27th KAGYU MONLAM 2009

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche’s absence this year was felt deeply by our monks. They requested all the Kagyu Monlam participants to make aspiration prayers for Rinpoche’s swift recovery and long life. HH 17th Karmapa announced that all participants of the Kagyu Monlam should make special wishing-prayers for Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche’s long life and speedy recovery, “so we all can gather together soon”.

At around that period, Benchen students from the east and west organised different pujas dedicated to the long life and good health of Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s western students also organised an accumulation of 10 million Tara mantras for Rinpoche’s well-being, good health and long life.

Kagyu Monlam in Bodhgaya

Kagyu Monlam in Bodhgaya took place from 24th to 31st December 2009. Right after the Winter Dharma Course, the 60 monks from the Benchen Shedra were joined by over 100 monks from Benchen Monastery who had travelled from Kathmandu for the Kagyu Monlam in Bodhgaya.

PARINIRVANA OF LAMA AH DO OF BENCHEN, TIBET

Lama Ah Do, a yogi from Benchen Monastery, Tibet passed away in mid-March 2010. He was in his 80s. Lama was a well-known practitioner who spent most of his time in retreat. He often led the Nyung-Nye practice for monks and the lay community from near and far.

Up to the time of his Parinirvana, Lama Ah Do remained in Benchen Monastery, Tibet preserving the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage practice of Karma Kagyu, in particular.

This Bodhisattva and master left a lasting impression on all who knew him as a very good practitioner, who demonstrated deep compassion through his willingness to help all sentient beings. One of Lama Ah Do’s last demonstrations of his realisation was that he remained in meditation (thugdam) for seven days after his passing.

Benchen Monastery in Kathmandu has been performing different pujas since Lama Ah Do’s Parinirvana. His loss is greatly felt by the Benchen community who awaits his return in another form to continue with his Dharma activities for the sake of all sentient beings.

However, upon his return to Kathmandu following his treatment, Rinpoche felt that it was a good idea to let the Spring Course proceed. Rinpoche asked Benchen Khenpos and the retreat master to lead the week-long Spring Course which began on 6th March 2010.All four sessions in the rst two days were taught by Khenpo Sonam. Khenpo Sonam has been with Benchen Monastery from a very young age. He was sent by our Rinpoches to the Dzongzar Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies in Bir, India (near Sherab Ling, the main seat of HE Situ Rinpoche). After Khenpo Sonam completed the compulsory 12 years’ study at the Shedra, he stayed on for a few more years where he was assistant to the Khenpos. Since Benchen Monastery was in dire need of a Khenpo, he was recalled to Benchen Monastery where he taught for some time. Khenpo Sonam is currently the Khenpo of the Shedra, Benchen Nangten Thoesam Ling in Pharping, a position he has held since Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche’s vision of the Shedra was realised.Khenpo Tsondrue led the Spring Course for the next two days. Like Khenpo Sonam, Khenpo Tsondrue has been with Benchen Monastery from a young age. After studying for some time in the Monastery, he was sent to Nalanda Institute in Rumtek, Sikkim, the main seat of HH Karmapa in India. After completing the required 12

years’ study, he was asked to return to Benchen Monastery, where he is currently the Resident Khenpo of the Monastery in Swayambhu.Khenpo Drupon Karma Gyatso was asked by Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche to give instructions and teachings over the next two days. Khenpo Drupon studied at Nalanda Institute in Rumtek together with Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. After completing his studies there, Khenpo Drupon did a three year retreat at Pullahari Monastery, the seat of HE Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche. Upon completion, he went on to do his second three year retreat at Benchen Drubde Osal Ling Retreat Centre in Pharping under the precious guidance of Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and Vajra Master Tenga Rinpoche. Since then, he has been assisting as a Retreat Master at the Benchen Retreat Centre in Pharping as the daily supervisor and guide for the second, third and current fourth batch of three year retreatants. Khenpo Drupon discharges his duties in an excellent and responsible way and his efforts are much appreciated by all the Lamas.

On the last morning of the Spring Course, a Milarepa Tsog offering was performed, led by the Dorje Lopon of the Monastery, both Khenpos and Khenpo Drupon.Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche invited all participants for lunch in Pharping Retreat Centre that day. Rinpoche also gave profound teachings and offered precious advice on how one should incorporate Dharma practice in our daily life. The Spring Course was thus completed in this auspicious way and all participants returned to their respective countries full of joy and happiness in their hearts!

BENCHEN GOES GREEN

Caring for the environment and conservation of the Earth is a subject HH 17th Karmapa holds dearly in his heart. All monasteries have been given guidelines on this. Benchen Monastery is also making an effort. What we are doing is only a drop in the ocean but it is a big step for us.

In our effort to save water, Benchen Retreat Centre in Pharping has installed an underground water tank which can hold up to 280 000 litres of rain water. This water is ltered and puri ed and can be recycled for use in the garden, washing and if absolutely necessary, for drinking. The water is piped to both Retreat Centres. In this way, we do not have to exhaust the precious source of water from the ground - something we take for granted every time we have clean water at the turn of the tap!

Putting a message across Near the Swayambhunath Stupa

We are trying to plant trees in the area too. Once a week the monks give the Monastery, Shedra and Retreat Centre a good clean up. They separate the non-recyclables from the recyclables.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche reprinted 1000 copies of HH 17th Karmapa’s “108 ways to preserve the environment” guideline. These were distributed to the participants at the Shangpa Kagyu empowerment in Benchen Monastery in October 2009.

Taking another step toward preserving Mother Nature, Benchen’s Environment Committee made a big decision during the Shangpa Kagyu empowerment against the use of plastic cups.

Instead, the participants were asked to bring their own receptacles for tea. We are happy to note that the participants were receptive and supportive of the idea of reducing the use of plastics.

Leaf-bowls were used to serve yogurt at lunch. These traditional Nepali bowls are fashioned from leaves and are 100% bio-degradable, thus very eco-friendly.

Even the monks at the Benchen Primary School contribute to this worthy cause. Every morning before lessons begin, the teachers lead by example, the cleaning up of classrooms and the grounds surrounding it, by picking up pieces of plastic bag and other litter.

On 1st April 2010, The Benchen Environment Group embarked on a massive clean-up of the Swayambhu area. Anybody who has been to Swayambhu will agree that this is no mean feat!

190 Benchen monks were joined by 40 monks from a neighbouring monastery and they got down to work right after breakfast.

Most of the garbage were made up of plastic bags and bottles. The local municipality provided a small truck to collect the garbage. It made umpteen trips to the dumpsite from the temporary car park near the Swayambhu Stupa.

Well done, and thank you to the monks of Benchen Monastery, Sangye Choling Monastery and other volunteers for hard work accomplished !

Since it will be the young who will bear the brunt of future climate change impact, we must now take action to heal the World, and Benchen is very committed to this.

The empowerment was held from 3rd to 11th April 2010. At the start of the empowerment, Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche encouraged devotees to be diligent in their Dharma practice and not to make excuses for ourselves that we have no time. Rinpoche quoted Milarepa as an example, saying that Mila could swim like a sh and y like a bird - not through magic, but through practising very hard in his Dharma path towards liberation.During the introduction to the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities of the Chikshe Kundrol empowerment, Rinpoche explained that the lineage is very rare and precious, as it came directly from HH 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Rigpe Dorje. The direct translation of Chikshe Kundrol is, “Knowing one thing, everything is liberated”. Rinpoche went on to explain that it has two levels of meaning:-1. When the practitioner upon receiving the empowerment,

practises the development stage very well, then gains realisation and spontaneously reaches the accomplishment stage.

2. When the practitioner is able to attain the practice of the development and accomplishment stages in union.

Rinpoche said that this does not however mean that after receiving the nine day empowerments, we will automatically become accomplished!Rinpoche further explained that the word “wang” (Tibetan) or “abhisheka” (Sanskrit) means transformation-the transforming of our body, speech and mind into the body, speech and mind of the ultimate form of the deity. The purpose of the outer mind and the ultimate empowerment is to help us realise the true nature of our mind. Rinpoche conferred up to six empowerments during each session of the intensive Chikshe Kundrol empowerment.

On the mornings of 4th and 5th April, Rinpoche conducted the Amitabha Changchok. The Chinese traditionally honour their departed ancestors during the Cheng Beng festival which falls on 5th April every year.

Many parents brought their school-going children, and many older students came on their own on the day Rinpoche conducted the ve Manjushri empowerments as part of the Chikshe Kundrol

empowerment.

Almost 300 devotees from around Malaysia as well as some who came from as far as Hong Kong and Taiwan received this empowerment. The participants felt happy, blessed and fortunate to have received the precious Chikshe Kundrol empowerment from Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. Rinpoche gave explanation and teachings directly in English during the duration of the nine-day empowerment and this has left a special and lasting impact in the minds of all the participants !

BENCHEN KARMA CHOELING, SINGAPORE

During his stay in Singapore in December 2009 to January 2010, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche realised that it was necessary to establish a small centre for the needs of the Benchen community in Singapore.

It took some effort to nd a suitable place. The new Benchen Centre in Geylang is surrounded by Dharma centres of other Tibetan schools and other Yanas. Rinpoche hopes to send a resident Lama to lead the Benchen community in Singapore in their Dharma activities.

Since this rented premises is very small, the centre will not be able to host big events. Nevertheless, Rinpoche feels that it is the right place for the gathering of the Benchen community for Dharma activities.

Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche arrived in Singapore on 11th April 2010 for the tting of his prosthesis. The very next day, Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and his entourage who were in Singapore after the Chikshe Kundrol empowerment in the Benchen Karma Kamtshang Ling in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, came to the new centre. Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche spent some time with Rinpoche at the centre and he also blessed the shrine and later had lunch with Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche. Both Rinpoches had a wonderful time together! It was very special and auspicious that the centre has been blessed by both our Rinpoches. It is our aspiration that the centre will bene t Singaporeans and also bring about world peace.

A teaching session was planned for Friday, 16th April 2010, making it the rst of cial Dharma activity of this centre. Just as Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche was about to begin teachings, Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche arrived at the centre ! What an auspicious coincidence, as Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche’s visit was totally unplanned and he had initially decided to come just to spend some time with Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche. All present were fortunate to receive teachings from our beloved Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche reiterated that this auspicious coincidence was a sure sign of development of the centre for the bene t of all sentient beings.

During the teachings, Kyabje Sangye Nenpa Rinpoche advised the disciples that while it was important to study the Dharma, education was also very important. He also told the devotees that they were very fortunate to have a great master - an old master, who should be looked upon as an antique which we value and hold dear! Therefore, we should receive the precious teachings from this great master, and apply them with wisdom and diligence. At the end of the session, Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche wished everyone all the best.

Kyabje Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche was invited by several centres in Singapore, where he expounded the Dharma to an appreciative crowd of students. Everyone was very happy to see Rinpoche again and his presence in Singapore was a great blessing felt by all. Upon the completion of his tour in Singapore, Rinpoche left for Jakarta in Indonesia to ful l the wishes of the Indonesian disciples.

The Monlam was held in a temple which was very suitable for this auspicious occasion. The organisers’ effort and hard work in preparation for this paid off as was evident in the smooth running of events. Rinpoche gave Dharma teachings during some sessions at the Monlam. It was wonderful to see so many people at the Monlam and over 90 ordained Lamas participated at the rst Singapore Kagyu Monlam.

The reserve tank can hold over 300 litres of puri ed drinking water for our monks. As there is constant power-cuts in Kathmandu, a back-up system was also installed to ensure the monks have a continuous supply of clean drinking water.

The monks of Benchen Monastery are very happy and wish to extend their appreciation to the Foundation in Denmark for this.
