Technical Information

Uses: Pots and mixed combination planters

Life Cycle: Annual

Germination: Stage I (7-14 days)

Cover: Do not cover seed as light is required for germination.

Light: Begonias require light to germinate. Supplemental 24-hour

assimilation light provided at this stage will increase germination,

reduce crop time and improve plug quality.

Temperature: Maintain temperatures of 70-74 °F (21-23 °C).

Relative humidity levels: Levels of 95 % or higher are optimal.

If using pelleted seed, 100 % relative humidity will aid in the

uniformity of germination.

Media: pH: Maintain media pH of 5.5-6.5 and EC: 0.5-0.75.

Plug Culture:

Stage II (7-14 days): Gradually lower temperatures to 68-70 °F

(20-21 °C). Begin fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a

calcium/potassium nitrate formulation. Do not saturate soils or

disturb seed when fertilizing. Continue assimilation lighting during

this stage.

Stage III (28-35 days): Lower soil temperatures to 68-70 °F

(20-21 °C). Allow media to dry down between irrigations. Increase

fertilization levels to 75-100 ppm with a calcium/potassium nitrate

fertilizer. Continue assimilation lighting during this stage.

Stage IV (7-14 days): Maintain temperatures to 68-70 °F

(20-21 °C). Apply a calcium/potassium nitrate feed at 100-150

ppm nitrogen. Maintain pH levels of 5.5-5.8 and EC levels of 0.75.

Continue assimilation lighting at this stage. Applications of Cycocel

(150-200 ppm) can be used to control growth.

Growing on: Transplant plugs after 8-10 weeks. Temperatures of

65-68 °F (18-20 °C) optimize growth and flowering. Excessive salt

buildups can cause root damage. Maintain pH levels of 5.5-6.5

and EC levels of 1.0-1.5. Maintain daylengths of 14+ hours to

avoid tuber formation. Fertilize at 150-200 ppm nitrogen in a well

balanced formula. Avoid ammonium based fertilizers; increased

calcium levels will improve plant quality.

Crop Time: 288 Plugs: 7-8 weeks

72 plugs: 9-10 weeks

Flowering 6” (13 cm) pots: 10-12 weeks

Culture Hints: Watering under bright afternoon sun can cause

leaf burn. Short days or temperatures below 62 °F (16 °C) will

result in tuber formation and delayed flowering.

Technical Information

Life Cycle: Annual

Exposure: Full sun to shade

Uses: Pots, mixed containers, baskets and

mass landscape plantings

Crop Time:

4” (10 cm) Pots North: 12-14 weeks; South: 10-12 weeks

Gallons North: 14-16 weeks; South: 12-14 weeks

Baskets North: 15-17 weeks; South: 13-15 weeks

Available as: Plug tested, pelleted seed and raw seed

Germination: Begonias require light to germinate, do not cover

seed or pellets. Germination occurs in 5-10 days at 70-74 °F

(21-23 °C), with a relative humidity of 95 % or higher. For pelleted

seed, slightly higher temperatures and 100 % relative humidity

aid in uniformity of germination. Germination media with a pH

of 5.5-6.5 is optimum. Uniformly moist and well-drained soils

are important.

Media: pH 5.5-6.6 for optimum plant growth and quality

Plug Culture: During Stage II (10-14 days), gradually lower

temperatures to 68-70 °F (20-21 °C). Maintain uniform soil

moisture. Do not allow young seedlings to dry out. Begin

fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrate nitrogen. During Stages III and IV,

continue to gradually lower temperatures to 65-70 °F (18-21 °C)

and feed at 100 ppm nitrate nitrogen on a weekly basis. During

this stage, supplemental extended day lighting will decrease crop

time and improve plant quality.

Finish: Transplant plugs into finished containers 5-6 weeks after

sowing. Grow on at 62-68 °F (16-20 °C). Fertilize at 150 ppm

nitrogen weekly, watching to avoid excessive salt build-ups. High

light conditions promote better branching and earlier flowering.

Plants respond well to assimilation lighting. Provide adequate

space to allow for maximum branching.

Cultural Hints: Monitor for fungus gnats and shore flies in the

moist plug trays and treat appropriately. Higher light levels and

sufficient space are important for improved branching.

Do not use Bonzi or Sumagic to control growth.

Technical Information

Uses: Landscape/bedding plants, mixed containers and

large containers

Garden height: 16-20’’ (40-50 cm)

Available as: Raw seed

Sowing method: 2-3 seeds per plug

Germination:

Stage I and II: 14-21 days at 68-72 °F (20-22 °C)

Stage III and IV: 21 days 64-68 °F (18-20 °C)

Requires light for germination.

Temperature: Grow at 61-64 °F (16-18 °C)

Media: Use a well-drained, growing media with 1-1,5 kg/m³

complete balanced fertilizer, pH 5.5-6.0

Sowing media: Media with very low soluble salt levels and

pH 5.5-6.0; keep soil slightly moist but not wet.

Plug Culture: From Stage II gradually lower humidity levels and

maintain uniform soil moisture levels. Do not let soluble salt level

rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a

well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization

levels can be increased up to 100-150 ppm.

Growing on: 5-6 weeks after sowing, transplant 1 plant into a

pot 4-4,5’’ (10,5-12 cm).

Fertilization: Moderate – high fertilization levels are required.

Fertilize the crop weekly with 200 -250 ppm nitrogen, using a

complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high

nitrogen levels. Avoid pH above 6.0, as high pH causes iron

deficiency. Apply chelated iron, if chlorosis becomes a problem.

To prevent magnesium deficiency apply magnesium sulphate

(0,025 %) 1-2 times.

Crop Time: Plug crop: 4-6 weeks; flowering pots: 10-12 weeks

Cultural Hints: Avoid high salt levels in media especially in the

early plug stages. Salvia farinacea are susceptible to leaf scorch

if soluble salts rise or pH drops.
