Principal’s Message Week 5 Term 3

Last Thursday our two debating teams competed against Armidale City

Public School. The Blue Team, comprising of Meya Kershaw, Jack

Coddington, Joseph Thorsen and Thomas Singlton partipcated in two

debates and won both of them convincingly. Our Underdogs Team of Zabella

Venue Blue Team will compete against the Ben Venue Underdogs. A big

thank you to Miss O’Hara for her organisation of the day.

It is always great to hear of student success in a variety of areas outside of

school. Cameron Frost (Year 6) came to give me the news that he had

competed in two days of dirt bike racing. The NSW Championship and the

Aussie Offroad Australian Championship. Cameron won the NSW

Championship event and came third in the Australian Championship.

Congratulations Cameron!

What a busy and exciting start to Term 3 we have had in 2B. Last Friday, Year 2 celebrated

Education Week and it was wonderful to be able to welcome students, parents and

grandparents into our classroom to assist us in our STEM activity. Students were faced with

the difficult and challenging task of designing and constructing a basket that would not only

safely carry Mr Grinling’s lunch across the zip-line to him in the lighthouse, but also protect the

food from Mr Bulmer’s 10 hungry seagulls! Our problem arose from the story ‘The Lighthouse

Keeper’s Lunch’ and what an engaging and fun challenge it was. All of our students worked

hard and it was fabulous to see the collaboration of ideas and 2B students working

cooperatively. There were some great designs and I am happy to report that all seven groups

successfully delivered Mr Ginling’s lunch to him and Mr Bulmer’s seagulls went hungry.

On Friday of Week 2, students went on their excursion to the Thalgarrah Environmental

Education Centre. This visit was to support our current Geography unit ‘Aboriginal

Connections.’ Everyone had a wonderful day and enjoyed learning about the local Aboriginal

people’s connection to our land. Students learnt Aboriginal names for some of the local wildlife

and how to track and find wildlife by identifying their droppings and scratchings. We then

visited the scar-tree and learnt how the Aboriginal people carved out the bark to use as a

Coolamon, before drawing a sketch of the tree using charcoal.

At the campfire circle, students collected firewood, before lighting a fire and cooking potatoes

in the coals. We experienced building shelters to protect us from the elements before

exploring the adventure playground and eating our lunch. The campfire roasted potatoes were

delicious! Before catching the bus back home, students went down to the Gara River where

we discussed the importance of a water source for local Aboriginal tribes and conducted some

map reading. It was sad to see the impact of our current drought and how dry this river bed

and the local environment were.

Thank you for your continued support.

North West PSSA Gymnastics Gala Day

On 12 August 2019 93 students from 14 schools from across the North West Region took up the chance to compete in the North West PSSA Gymnastics at the Armidale City Gymnastics Centre in three of the Gymnastics Gym Sports Disciplines: Men’s Gymnastics, Women’s Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics, The Men’s Gymnastics Competition included 27 competitors in the Levels 0-3, who competed on Rings, Parallel Bars, Floor, Vault, Pommel Horse and High Bar. Men’s routines are judged out of 10.00 or higher on Level 3 and above when bonus skills can be added to routines.

The Women’s Gymnastics Competition included 58 competitors in Levels 1-4, who competed on Floor, Beam, Uneven Bars and Vault. Women’s routines are judged out of 5.00 or out of 10.00 on Level 3 and above when additional bonus skills can be added to routines.

The Rhythmic Gymnastics competition included 8 competitors in Levels 1-4, who competed with the apparatus of Freehand, Rope, Ball, Clubs and Hoop.

The North West Region would like to thank the judges and officials (especially all those associated with Ben Venue Public School) in each of the three GymSports discipline, who volunteered their time to judge, coach and help in the tally room and canteen.

Congratulations to all the competitors in the 2019 PSSA Gymnastics competition. A date is already being negotiated for 2020 and the North West PSSA looks forward to seeing even more competitors next year, with the potential for an Inter-Regional Carnival or State Competition in years to come.
