ATLANTIC PUFFIN Not just a clown…
30cm in length
Excellent fliers. Flapping their wings
at up to 400 beats per minute,
reaching speeds of 88 km/h !
Can dive up to 60 metres, they
swim by flapping their wings as if
flying through the water and use
their feet to steer!
Eat fish, especially sandeels and
can easily hold 10 fish in their beak!
The great black-backed gull will try
to eat them!

Gather in enourmous groups
Standing upright on a rock ledge, with its
white underparts showing and paddle-like feet
sticking out in front, the guillemot is the
nearest thing Britain has to a penguin!
Dive up to 60m and swim by kicking their
paddled feet!
Eats fish and crustaceans

A flock of feeding gannets can often
point to the presence of feeding
porpoise or dolphins.

SHAGHeight of 66 - 81cm.
Comically-crested with a ‘coiffed’
hairstyle and brilliant bright eyes.
They swim gracefully underwater, helped
by their webbed feet.
Can stay under water for a minute!
Stands proud, maybe drying off,
digesting food or just showing off!
Frightens away threats with a loud hiss!
Eats fish, mainly sand eels and
occasionally crustacea and molluscs.
NORTHERN FULMARUp to 50cm in height
Wingspan of around 110cm
Strong and stocky

Glides across the sea with its large straight
wings and is resilient to very strong winds!
Can live up to 50 years!
Spends so much time at sea it’s legs are
pretty useless on land.
Eats fish waste and crustaceans.

Dainty
Excellent fishermen, the only
gull that dives and swims
underwater to capture food.
The name "kittiwake" is
derived from the bird's peculiar
cry, a shrill 'kittee-wa-aaake,
kitte-wa-aaake'.

Will eat almost anything!
