Welcome to Yangon, Myanmar. Upon group arrival in Yangon International Airport you will meet our English speaking local guide who will remain with the group for the duration of the tour.

*Private group transfer to the hotel. As most flights will arrive late in the day and evening you’ll be free to relax and unwind at the

hotel after check-in. *Broad Escapes will have a designated group flight from Toronto. The group transfer will be based on

Overnight Yangon – 2 nights – Sule Shangrila Hotel (or similar)

Day 2 – Sunday, Nov 4th - Yangon B/D Embark on a journey to explore the highlights of Yangon. We begin in the colonial style city

center and one of the landmarks Sule Paya stupa – built over 2,000 years ago and the focal point of numerous historical events. Continue to Karaweik Hall to marvel at the uniquely decorated “hamsa-bird-shaped” floating barge on Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake. Visit the Bogyoke (Scotts) Market, where hundreds of gemstone, handicrafts, art, clothes and food stores are tucked in a maze of colour. We complete the day with a visit to one of the world’s most spectacular monuments, the Swedagon Pagoda, a gold covered bell dome structure that dominates the city’s skyline. Legend has it that strands of sacred Buddha’s hair are enshrined here. The Shwedagon is an iconic symbol of the country, a sight not to be missed. (market is closed on Mondays and on public holidays)

Day 3 – Monday, Nov 5th – Yangon – Heho – Inle Lake B/D Transfer to the airport for the flight to Heho, a quiet transit town in the beautiful hills of Shan

State. Visit the bustling main Heho Market, a meeting point for the various ethnic minority groups of the surrounding areas to trade handmade goods and locally grown produce. On our way to Inle Lake, we stop at a local family workshop to learn how Shan umbrellas and paper are made in their traditional way, using natural fibre from mulberry trees. We then continue to Inle Lake and descend through the scenic valley offering stunning views of the Shan Mountains and rice paddy fields. In the afternoon we embark on an exploration of Inle Lake with a visit to Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda, home to some of the country’s most sacred Buddha statues covered in gold leaf. Tucked away in a quiet corner and away from the notorious boat traffic we will spend the afternoon visiting a traditional Intha home, owned by 5 sisters who are descendants of master lacquer ware makers. Here we’ll enjoy traditional snacks with the family and learn about their life on the lake, their history and culture.

Overnight Inle Lake – 1 night – Pristine Lotus Spa Resort (or similar)

Day 4 – Tuesday, Nov 6th – Inle Lake – Phekhon - Loikaw B/L/D Today enjoy a scenic boat-ride down the lake and along the Bilu River to Samkhar (Sagar)(3hrs),

an ancient capital of a petty state with the same name. Here we stroll through the village, old pagodas and temples and experience the quaint village life. In the afternoon continue by boat viewing the small villages that seem unchanged in time to Phekhon (2hrs), a small town situated on the shore of Mobye Dam. Here we visit the Sacred Heart Church built by Italian missionaries in the late 19th century and enjoy panoramic views of the town from the hill of Our Lady of Jeroblo Grotto. A late lunch will be enjoyed a local home in Phekhon owned by Mr. Pascal Khoo Thwe. This is brief biography of Mr Pascal Khoo Thwe Born into the tiny and remote Kayan Padaung tribe, famous for their long-necked women, Pascal Khoo Thwe has been a seminarian, a rebel fighter in Myanmar's eastern jungles and a refugee. He then graduated in English literature from Cambridge, the first member of his tribe ever to study at university, after which he pursued careers in finance, in journalism and in catering. His extraordinary story is told in his acclaimed autobiography, From the Land of Green Ghosts, published by HarperCollins. Other books in the pipeline include Indigo Limbo, a description of Myanmar communities in exile, and a jungle cookbook. After a quarter century away Pascal has returned to his homeland, and is devoting himself to helping his people through various sustainability and environmental causes. He assists Expeditions Myanmar in guide training, in vetting the environmental practices of the company's suppliers and in reviewing the sustainability and environmental impact of the company's programs. After lunch continue by mini-coach to Loikaw (approximately 25 miles/45 minutes), the capital of Kayah State. The smallest and one the least developed states of Myanmar; Kayan is pristine and dotted with lush jungles and wildlife. After we check-in at the hotel, enjoy a panoramic view of Loikaw from Broken Mountain Pagoda (Taung Kwe Taung Zedi) at sunset.

Day 5 – Wednesday, Nov 7 – Panpet Villages & The Nee Lah Leh Village (Kayan Tribes) B/L Today is an immersion in culture as we visit the local villages and tribes of the area and learn

about their customs and traditional way of life. We start the day in Demoso, a provincial town to the west of Loikaw, to explore the Local

Market (only on Mon/Wed/Sat) filled with exotic produces and villagers exchanging their wares. Here you can sample the local wine (Khaung Ye), sausages and other exotic dishes. Continue to Panpet Village, a Kayan village nestled among the rolling hills and jagged mountains. Here we will be welcomed by a community guide and be introduced to the daily activities of the Long-Necked Kayan (Padaung) tribe. On a gentle hike we’ll learn about the history and local legends that have been passed on through generations. Then continue to Hta Nee Lah Leh Village, for a traditional lunch before exploring the village with a local guide. Situated near a series of lakes surrounded by mountains and paddy fields, Hta Nee Lah Leh is known for keeping Kayah tradition alive. Here, we will see totems, spirits houses and shrines dedicated to various kinds of benevolent and malevolent spirits and learn about the shamanism culture of this village. Continue on to visit a traditional house and learn about the building ceremonies and the roles of men and women in the home. Afterwards see the traditional art and craft being created by the local artisans.

Day 6 – Thursday, Nov 8th – Loikaw - Kalaw B/D Today we drive to Kalaw (105 miles, 5 hour drive), a former British colonial station where

ambassadors would spend the summers enjoying the crisp mountain air and sipping on gin and tonics. Along the way we’ll stop at the Pinlaung market for a short visit. After check-in at the hotel, enjoy the afternoon by either relaxing in fresh mountain air, or hiking around Kalaw’s beautiful forest vistas with a local guide.

Day 7 – Friday, Nov 9th – Kalaw – Heho - Mandalay B/D Transfer to Heho airport (1 hour) for the domestic flight to Mandalay. Upon arrival, we visit the

major highlights of the city: the Golden Palace Monastery, the sole surviving Royal Palace building in Mandalay, offering a glimpse of the original style and architecture of the Myanmar royals; and the Kuthodaw Pagoda, a compound housing Buddha’s teachings carved in the sacred Pali script on stone tablets and regarded as the world’s largest book in terms of surface area. We end our day with sunset panoramic views over city skyline on Mandalay Hill, the highest point of the city.

Day 8 – Saturday, Nov 10th – Ava (Inwa) – Sagaing – Amarapura – UBein Bridge B/D Begin the day with a visit to the Jade Market where people from all over Mandalay gather each

morning to trade jade. Continue to the Artisan Quarters, where some of the oldest craftsmanship dating back to last kingdom of Myanmar is showcased. Here we observe the process of pounding gold leaf, detailing teakwood carvings and embroidering Myanmar tapestry that depict a journey to the Ancient Kingdoms of Myanmar near Mandalay. Continue to Ava (Inwa), the ancient capital of Shan and Burmese kingdoms for over four centuries. Crossing the Myit Nge River by ferry, the small roads of Ava are explored by horse-drawn carts. We visit the Bagaya Teak Monastery, over three hundred years old yet well preserved and still in use by local monks; the Nanmyin Watch Tower, the last standing structure of the Ava dynasty palace compound also known as the “Leaning Tower of Ava”; and the Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery, a 300-year old architectural wonder with graceful archways. We continue to the Ancient Kingdom of Sagaing, located across the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River. From the Sagaing Hills, we enjoy views of the hillside dotted with countless pagodas and pay a special

visit to a monastery to learn about the life of Buddhist devotees. We continue to another beautiful ancient capital, Amarapura, famous for its textile industries. Here we visit a cottage industry workshop to learn how Myanmar longyis and traditional fabrics are woven. Continuing to the Ubein Bridge at sunset. This simple yet remarkable teak structure spans 1.2km over Taungtaman Lake. The silhouette by the setting sun, is a magical experience and a photographer’s dream.

Overnight in Mandalay – Mandalay Hill Resort (or similar)

Day 9 – Sunday, Nov 11th – Mandalay – Bagan-Mount Popa B/D Transfer to Mandalay airport for the flight to Bagan. Upon arrival enjoy the scenic drive (1.5

hrs) to Mount Popa. Along the way we’ll stop at a small village where the locals make a variety of treats from the juice of the palm tree. Watch farmers climb the tall Toddy trees and tap the fruit, returning to land to boil the liquid into wine and sweet molasses. Kids can also be seen grinding rice and corn and guiding the oxen as they pull the stone grinder. We continue to Mount Popa, an extinct volcano, which dominates the area. Mount Popa was for centuries where kings of central Burma made pilgrimages to confer with the sacred statues about the future of their reigns and the Burmese spiritual epicenter for those who worship the pantheon of nat spirits and martyrs. After paying respects to the Nat Shrine at the foot of Mount Popa, we climb nearly 800 steps to the pagoda perched on top of the mountain to admire the views of the surrounding plains and farmlands. For those who choose not to climb up, there will be an option to relax at Popa Mountain Resort or walk around one of the villages at the foot of the mountain.

Day 10 – Monday, Nov 12th - Bagan B/D Drive along dusty lanes and tree shaded roads past temples and monasteries to Taung Bi

Village. Continue with a walking tour and visit the noodle makers, a Myanmar-style movie theatre and a local tea shop. Along the Ayeyarwaddy River we also visit some traditional family businesses including blacksmiths, brick makers, dry snack ‘factories’ and bamboo roof producers, where the skills and trade have been passed on for generations. Continue on to visit some (not all) of famous temples in Bagan (Shwezigon Stupa, Gubyaukgyi (Wet-Kyi-Inn), Htilominlo Temple, Ananda Temple, Dhamayangyi Temple, etc..,) . In the evening, enjoy a sunset near Dhamayazeka Zedi.

Overnight in Bagan – 2 nights Bagan Lodge (or similar)

Day 11 – Tuesday, Nov 13th - Bagan B/L Visit to the Nyaung U Market, the largest market in the Bagan region, to get a glimpse into the

local life. Then we learn how Bagan’s famous lacquerware crafts are produced in Myingaba Village, and then go to Myazedi Temple. Close by the Myingaba Gubyaukgyi Temple is a sight to behold, housing Bagan’s best preserved mural paintings of the Buddha’s Jataka reincarnations. Manuha Temple, built by the Mon king in the 1300s, represents his time in captivity under the Bagan king. Continue to the Monastic School (Zay Ta Won) which provides education for over 500 students, who cannot afford to attend regular school. In the evening, transfer to the Ayeyarwaddy River for a Private Sunset Cruise with views of the temple silhouettes and bustling shore.

Day 12 – Wednesday, Nov 14 – Bagan - Yangon B/D Transfer to Bagan Nyaung U airport for the domestic flight to Yangon. Upon arrival, we visit the

quaint Yangon Old Quarters, built during the British colonial era. Many charming historical buildings are still located here. During our stroll through bustling market streets full of merchants and food stalls, we visit a local pharmacy and learn about Myanmar traditional medicine, stop for a cup of tea and snack in the fashion of locals, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Yangon. We continue to one of Asia’s architectural landmarks, the elegant STRAND HOTEL built by the Sarkies Brothers. Inside, we visit the RIVER ART GALLERY, where the works of some of the most famous and skilled Burmese artists are on display. Spend the afternoon visiting local shops and artisans displaying handmade products including jewellery, textiles, woodwork, lacquerware and more. Celebrate this mesmerizing journey with a farewell dinner and reminisce with fellow travelers about the memories and friendships that have been made along the way.

Day 13 – Thursday, Nov 15 – Yangon departure B As most international flights depart late in the day today will be a day at leisure with a private

group *transfer to the airport to meet the designated group flight or choose to extend your stay to Ngapali Beach (see below).

Late check out until 6pm. *Broad Escapes will have a designated group flight from Toronto. The group transfer will be

based on the designated flight departure time. Private transfers (at an additional cost) can be arranged for those departing at a different date/time.

Note: Travel times are based on averages and are subject to change. Please note that an average/moderate level of fitness is required to enjoy the various activities of this tour. Trip activities include walking, sometimes on uneven ground, climbing stairs and getting on and off buses, boats etc. Participants should acknowledge that the conditions in Myanmar are not as advanced as in North America and that vehicles are not always equipped with seat belts and other passenger restraints.
