Have you ever wondered why so many people call Belton “home”? What really makes Belton so special? I’ve had the privilege of being a citizen of Belton for nearly 10 years, and have developed a deep passion for Belton in that short period of time. I’ve lived in similar sized towns throughout my lifetime, but none share the character of Belton. So I often wonder…

What creates the chemistry that makes Belton so attractive?

Maybe it’s our deep history.As you take a trip through our downtown, you’ll see several historic homes and buildings that remind us of how the town has evolved over time. The Bell County Museum is full of exhibits and collections that paint a great picture of how our community roots were established. Those roots really do run deep, and we continue to be proud of all of those who have come before us to make Belton what it is today.

Maybe it’s our passion for our country.Our 4th of July Celebration is now nationally recognized, and our relationship with our friends at Fort Hood is fantastic. We continue to be passionate about welcoming our soldiers and their families into this community while they are stationed at Fort Hood. Interestingly, a lot of those soldiers move back to Belton when they finish their service at other stations! The Patriot Way Brickwalk will become another great

symbol of how much Belton values our country and those that protect it.

Maybe it’s our educational opportunities.Belton Independent School District takes the education of our children very seriously. The passion that is behind their mission of making “Every Kid a Winner” is prevalent as you walk the halls of the schools and attend the various extracurricular activities. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor continues to draw people in from across the country who are pursuing a quality Christian education. The university is certainly successful in making “Crusaders for Life”, but they are also successful in turning their students, staff and faculty into “Beltonians for life”.

Maybe it’s simply the people.No community can exist without people, and we are truly fortunate that great people have chosen to live, work and play in Belton, Texas. We are so thankful that our town is full of hard working people that collectively contribute to make this community what it is today, while considering how today impacts Belton tomorrow.

Founded in 1850, Belton is the Bell County seat and has historically served as both the local government center of the county and as a marketplace and shipping point for area farmers and ranchers. Between 1860 and 1880, Belton was a regional center for the cattle boom and even became an important stopping point for cattle herds along the famed Chisholm Trail. Between 1880 and 1930, Belton was a processing center for the regional cotton crop which became the county’s principal cash crop during this period, particularly in the blackland prairie region in east Bell County. Belton’s long and distinctive past is evidenced by the city’s many historic homes and commercial buildings. Charming storefronts characterize the historic commercial district, the center of which is the impressive Bell County Courthouse, built in 1885.

Today, Belton is home to an estimated 19,000 people. New residents continue to be drawn to Belton by outstanding schools, great parks and by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, also located in Belton. Chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, the historic college campus provides both students and area residents with educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. Providing a natural backdrop to historic Belton are over 160 acres of parkland located throughout the city.

Situated along Belton Lake, Belton is a city abounding with parks and recreational opportunities. The beautiful Nolan Creek meanders through central Belton where residents and visitors can enjoy a walk along the Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail. This unique 1.5 mile trail provides a scenic tour through three city parks. The trail offers residents and visitors beautiful views of the Nolan Creek, as well as numerous opportunities to take a break while reading about the historic Chisholm Trail in one of ten pocket parks located along the trail.

Active sporting enthusiasts will be impressed with Belton’s outstanding sports fields, park complexes and water-based recreational activities. In 2006, the City of Belton received over $370,000 in grants from various state and private organizations

allowing continued improvement to local parks and fields. By leveraging city funds with grants and building community partnerships with citizens and community organizations, the City of Belton continues to enhance the quality of life for all its citizens.

Also available to visitors and residents is the T. B. Harris Community Center, a project recognized with numerous awards. The completely renovated facility features multiple rooms offering state of the art accommodations for business meetings, while at the same time providing ample space and beautiful vistas into the ten-acre park surrounding the school. The building is well suited for conferences and training events while providing an idyllic setting for wedding receptions, parties and reunions. The Belton community enjoys a close relationship with Fort Hood, the largest Army base in the U.S. military. Located just 20 miles to the west of Belton, Fort Hood is the home of over 50,000 soldiers, their families and thousands of civilians and retirees, many of whom live, shop, worship and attend schools in Belton. Through the leadership of the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Committee, Belton has formed an active relationship with Fort Hood’s leadership and military units. In October 2008, the City of Belton joined other Central Texas communities in signing the Central Texas/Fort Hood Army Community Covenant, renewing their commitment to building and sustaining partnerships that support the strength, resilience and readiness of Soldiers and their Families. The Citizens of Belton recognize the commitment that the Soldiers and their Families make every day, and are dedicated to providing community support to honor their sacrifices.

Military RelationsThe Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Committee participates in many of Fort Hood’s command ceremonies and Welcome Home Celebrations for soldiers returning from deployments. They provide support to units preparing to

deploy and support to the Rear Detachment Commands during deployments. They encourage community support for Fort Hood programs, including Santa’s Workshop and Wild West Night, that provide support to the military families.

Adopt-A-Fort Hood UnitWe have an active Adopt-a-Fort Hood Unit program, matching many of our businesses and organizations with specific Fort Hood units. They are able to share support for each other in a variety of ways, benefiting all involved.

Living in the New NormalThrough our Belton Military Family Support Committee, we sponsor Military Family Town Hall Meetings for Military families living in the Belton Independent School District. These meetings help in identifying and offering support to all of the military families living within the School District. Through the program, the Committee, along with Belton ISD, has helped start before and after school care programs and developed a Military Family Packet full of important and useful information about Belton the new families recieve as they register their children for school.

Honor, service and commitment. These are just a few of the core values of men and women who make up our Nation’s armed services. Throughout the ages, these individuals swore an oath to protect and defend our Constitution and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. At home, on the seas, in the air or on some foreign shore, our military have secured the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for people around the globe.

The Patriot Way Brick Walk, a project of the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce, is providing Central Texans the opportunity to honor a loved one who served in our nation’s armed services. The project provides a public venue for area citizens to purchase a customized engraved brick to be laid in the sidewalk along Central Avenue in

downtown Belton as a permanent memorial for those who serve or have served in the military.

In addition to the brick walk project, the Chamber is currently working on plans to develop a military memorial at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Central Avenue. This memorial will be a focal point to attract I-35 travelers to exit the interstate and visit both the memorial and the Patriot Way Brick Walk. Both projects will be permanent reminders of the love and support Central Texans extend to our brave men and women of our military.

Belton boasts a variety of churches that are integral to the life of the community. Located at the crossroads of Interstate Highway 35 and U.S. Highway 190, Belton is within 180 miles of every major market in Texas. This charming community can be found approximately 135 miles south of Dallas/Forth Worth and 55 miles north of Austin, placing Belton in the center of the state’s rapidly growing high-tech corridor.

Belton offers the amenities of a small community – low crime, proactive business climate and a strong work ethic with the advantages of a large city. Many businesses and industries have found Belton’s central location to be conducive to their companies’ growth. As the bulls-eye of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), Belton draws its labor from a population of over 376,000. Another major asset is the untapped source of skilled labor due to the massive presence of Fort Hood, the largest military base in the U.S. On a larger scale, Belton can be found in the midst of the Texaplex (Houston, Dallas and San Antonio). This Texas Triangle is home to 80% of the state’s population of 24 million.

Belton Young Professionals (BYP) is a non-profit, all volunteer, organization dedicated to providing career-minded individuals with opportunities to develop socially, professionally, and civically. BYP is committed to retain and attract young professionals who are driven and enthusiastic about doing business in our area. Through social networking events, leadership workshops and business lunches, BYP strives to keep young professionals informed and engaged both professionally and in the community. It is the groups desire to connect young professionals with one another in order to relocate, expand and/or promote themselves in our community.

Members are generally between the ages of 19-40, however this age is merely a guideline. Membership is based on individuals willingness to be young-at-heart, and not their birth certificate. BYP is looking for vibrant people with fresh ideas.

Belton Independent School DistrictBelton Independent School District’s motto of “Every Kid a Winner” expresses the heart of BISD’s mission to provide an education that challenges all students to excel. Belton ISD is a key reason that families and businesses choose to locate in Belton. For the 2008-2009 school year, BISD had over 8500 students, over 1200 employees and an annual budget of $61.9 million. Student population has increased 250-350 students each year for the past several years.

The District currently has eight elementary schools (three campuses, grades Kindergarten-5; five campuses, grades PreK-5; two middle schools, grades 6-8; and two high schools, grades 9-12.) The new Roy and Jean Potts Belton Swim Center at Belton High School opened for students in October, 2007, and to the community in January, 2008, and continues to expand its offerings to both the students and surrounding community. District administrative offices and the Educational Development Center are located at 400 N. Wall.

The District maintains consistently high standards for both students and staff. The Superintendent for Belton ISD is Dr. Vivian Baker, and Deputy Superintendent is Susan Kincannon. The Belton ISD Board of Trustees meets on the third Monday of each month at the Educational Development Center, 400 N. Wall St. Campuses and the District as a whole show continued improvement

on the increasingly stringent Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, performing better on the 2009 TAKS than ever before. Belton ISD continues to attract teachers of the highest caliber.

Belton ISD voters passed a Tax Ratification Election in October 2008 to meet the budget needs of a growing district. The Long Range Facilities Planning Committee met during the spring and fall of 2008 to consider district facilities needs and prioritized a new middle school, technology upgrades, and outdoor renovations to both the baseball and softball complexes, including seating, concessions, and restrooms. Tennis courts and athletic dressing rooms were also identified as priorities. Belton Lake & Stillhouse Hollow LakeBelton Lake has long been a Central Texas favorite for water sports, fishing tournaments, camping, picnics or just relaxing. Here, anglers haul in white crappie, walleye, flathead catfish, channel catfish, bluegill, sunfish, largemouth and white bass. Fed by the Leon River, Belton Lake offers a haven for fishing and boating enthusiasts, covering 12,300 surface acres with 136 miles of shoreline.

Fed by the Lampasas River, Stillhouse Hollow Lake is rated among the highest of Texas lakes for water quality. It covers 11,830 acres and includes 58 miles of shoreline. Open to all, the lake offers many attractive areas for outdoor recreation, water sports, hunting and fishing, sailing or just kicking back. Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the Chalk River Falls Nature Trail and its scenic waterfall.

City ParksBelton is home to 14 park facilities spread throughout the City. Confederate Park, Yettie Polk Park, and Harris Community Park grace the banks of Nolan Creek, in the heart of Belton. The Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail meanders along the creek bank, linking the three parks together. The trail offers nearly 1.5 miles of concrete pathway set with lush landscaping while offering magnificent views of the creek. As you walk the trail, take time to read the historic storyboards, each detailing a significant event of the famous Chisholm Trail. Confederate Park serves as the City’s Park and Ride commuter facility, and is home to Belton’s newest, fun, family event… Movie in the Park. Yettie Polk Park is a perfect location for an outdoor wedding with a quaint gazebo and audience seating. Yettie Polk Park is also the host site for Christmas on the

Chisholm Trail, the 4th of July Festival, and the Annual Kiwanis Family Fun Day. Harris Community Park boasts Belton’s first splash pad, which has a decidedly western them. Horses, cowboys, and a covered wagon spray water on delighted youngsters and oldsters alike. In addition to the splash pad, Harris Park has a creek overlook, horseshoe pits, a butterfly sanctuary, and a fishing nook on the creek crossing.

In 2008, Miller Heights Community Park joined the list of City park facilities, and South Wall Tiger Park opened as the City’s second splash pad. Both offer great amenities for families on the south end of Belton to enjoy close to home. In the north sector of the City, Heritage Park is adjacent to the banks of the Leon River. Huge trees on the riverbank provide ideal shady spots for picnics and watching the flowers grow. Heritage Park is also the City’s premiere sports facility park, with lots of open space and baseball fields. Chisholm Trail Park is located adjacent to several school campuses, and provides softball fields and green space to students as well as citizens. Miller Springs Nature CenterMiller Springs offers an expansive 266 acres for hiking and exploring nature on a self-guided basis. This authentically restored prairie area includes several well-maintained walking trails lined with native broom grass, blue stem and wildflowers that lead to picturesque sites throughout the center. Located in the historic “Tennessee Valley” along the Leon River, Miller Springs Nature Center is home to three canyons and overlooks the Belton spillway.


Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation AreaSwim, sunbathe and enjoy Belton Lake at Sierra Beach, BLORA’s authorized swimming area. The swimming area is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer season pending availability of lifeguards. Two large water slides are located near the beach. The snack bar sells refreshments. More than 300 family picnic sites and 143 covered picnic shelters, many with barbecue grills are scattered throughout the park. Bell County MuseumFor decades, the award-winning Bell County Museum has been a vital resource for the collection, interpretation and preservation of the historical heritage of the Bell County region. The collection covers pre-history, the land grant period, the formation of the county in 1850, and the establishment of Fort Hood. The Bell County Museum is now home to a new interactive exhibit focusing on one of the most prolific and important archaeological sites in North America, located in Bell County, Texas, called the Gault Site. The museum was originally housed in the beautifully restored Carnegie Library Building, constructed in 1904. A major expansion in 2006 provided an additional 10,000 square feet of space, which allows the museum to expand its mission to include providing quality traveling exhibitions. The 2010 season exhibits will include Meet the Fergusons: Two Governors for the Price of One, 1968 in America and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Lee and Grant.

The award-winning museum provides interactive exhibits, fun shops and summer camps for children, as well as a very special children’s mascot, Charley Chisholm! Musick Alumni Center and MuseumThe Musick Alumni Center and Museum at the Parker House on the campus of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will be open to the public on April 1, 2010. The museum is housed in the former president’s home which has been remodeled to become a showcase for the rich heritage of the school. The first floor exhibits communicate fourteen of the traditions loved by students and alumni while the upstairs tells the chronological history of UMHB, beginning in 1845. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor offers a wide-range of events and cultural activities for the community through the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Since the 1850s folks from all over Texas have come to celebrate the 4th of July in Belton. This week-long celebration draws over 50,000 people and features one of USA Today’s Top Ten Parades in the country, the Festival on Nolan Creek, a carnival, Texas Ole Time Fiddlers’ Contest, Patriotic Program, the Kick-off BBQ and the PRCA rodeo, which is the highlight of the celebration. Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock ShowThe Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock Show, Inc. was founded in the 1950s and has grown into one of the largest county shows in Central Texas. Central Texas State FairThe annual Central Texas State Fair kicks off Labor Day weekend at the Bell County Expo Center. This four-day event is packed with entertainment and attractions including a carnival with nightly armband specials, double point livestock shows (steer, heifer, goat, lamb, pig), a petting zoo, sidewalk comedy show, military night, professional bull riding in the air-conditioned dome, food, commercial booths, arts and crafts, live music on the outdoor stage and much more with something fun for the entire family to enjoy. Christmas on the Chisholm TrailChristmas on the Chisholm Trail is an annual, family fun-filled event with holiday flare.
