GeneralDescriptionof InterrollConveyorBelt Drives
The Interroll Belt Drive was first producedin 1953 specifically for conveyor beltapplications. The aim was to produce an extremelycompact, totally enclosed and highly effi-cient belt conveyor drive resistant todust, water, oil, grease or other harmfulsubstances – which would be quick andsimple to install and would require virtu-ally no maintenance. These aims were achieved and today theInterroll Belt Drive is considered to beone of the most reliable and effective beltconveyor drives available throughout theworld. The belt drive is in simplistic terms ahighly efficient geared motor drive, whichis totally enclosed in a steel cylindricaltube, referred to as the “shell”.The shell, usually crowned to ensurecentral belt tracking, is fitted with bearinghousings incorporating precision bear-ings, oil seals and it rotates on a shaft. The motor stator is fixed to the shaft orshafts and the power cable passesthrough one end of the shaft or shafts, eliminating the need for slip rings andbrushes. The squirrel cage motor manufactured inlaminated steel is machined concentric tohigh tolerances and designed to give200% starting torque for 3-phase ver-sions. The rotor pinion is coupled directlyto the gearbox. The gearbox transmits the drive directlyto the shell bearing housing through ageared rim and provides high efficiency
from the electrical motor to the surface ofthe shell with very little frictional losses. The belt drive is oil filled. The oil actsboth as lubricant and coolant wherebythe heat is dissipated through the shelland conveyor belt.
The Interroll Belt Drive is supplied asstandard with:• Machined mild steel crowned shell.• Electric motor manufactured in accor-
dance with IEC 34-1 (EN60034-1) (VDE 0530).
• Class F insulation according to IEC 34-1 (EN60034-1) (VDE 0530).
• Most international voltages.• Wide range voltage available for all belt
drives in this catalogue.• Factory oil filled and tested.• IP66/67 (EN60034-5) enclosure is stan-
dard for all 3-phase motors in this cata-logue.
• CE marking according to directive73/23/EEC relating to electrical equip-ment.

Features andBenefits ofInterrollBelt Drives
Purpose-built designThe Interroll Belt Drive has been specifi-cally designed for belt conveyors andother material handling equipment.
Totally enclosedThe motor, gearbox and bearings aretotally enclosed and sealed inside a steelshell; therefore they are unlikely to faildue to harmful environmental conditionssuch as water, dust, grit, chemicals, grease, oil, etc.
Space-saving designBecause the drive unit and bearings aremounted inside the belt drive shell, ittakes up much less room than a conven-tional drive. No need for costly extras likechains, v-belts, couplings, bearings, sup-port structure and special guarding.
SafetyThe Interroll Belt Drive is probably one of the safest drives available because thedrive is completely enclosed and theexternal shafts are always stationary. The only moving external parts are thebelt drive shell and bearing housings.
Low purchasing and installation costThe Interroll Belt Drive is quite often less expensive than a conventional drivebecause it has fewer parts, whichreduces conveyor design and parts pur-chasing costs. It is also much quickerand easier to install – certainly less thana quarter of the time needed to fit anexposed system.
Low maintenance costsThe end user also benefits from theInterroll Belt Drive, because it requires nomaintenance other than the recom-mended oil change every 10,000 hours. In other words, there are almost 5 yearsbetween oil changes based on an8 hour/day 5 day working week. The BeltDrive versions 80S and 113S, however, are lubricated for life.
EfficiencyThe Interroll Belt Drive usually has amuch higher efficiency from electricalmotor to shell (drum surface) than con-ventional drives, because it has fewerfrictional losses, and therefore efficienciesof up to 97% can be achieved.
CleanlinessBecause the Interroll Belt Drive is totallyenclosed, it cannot contaminate food-stuffs, electrical components, plasticsand other such materials that must bekept perfectly clean during handling.

Aesthetic appearanceIf installed correctly the Interroll Belt Drivealways looks good. Due to its compactsize and smooth lines quite often thedrive is out of sight, because it is hiddenwithin the conveyor frame.
Weight saving and distributionOften the Interroll Belt Drive is lighter thanconventional drives and often it is possi-ble to reduce the cost of the conveyorstructure, because the weight is evenlydistributed within the conveyor frame.
Fewer partsAn Interroll Belt Drive consists of thedrive and two fixing brackets! Conven-tional drives can require up to 8 or moreseparate components, most of whichhave to be purchased from differentsuppliers or manufactured specially.
Low noiseThanks to the totally sealed enclosureand high quality gears the Interroll BeltDrive runs almost at a whisper – a veryimportant fact in today’s modern factoryenvironments.

Important Information
Belt pull and torqueThe speed values given in this catalogueare based on a motor which has reachedthe rated belt pull and torque.
Belt speedThe exact belt speed can deviate up to±10% of the normal belt speed shown. The exact belt speed of single phase beltdrives can deviate by +10% to –20%from the nominal belt speed shown.Exact information regarding the actualbelt speed for special applications isavailable on request. The speeds listedin this catalogue are always nominal fullload speeds.
Belt drives with mechanical backstopBelt drives fitted with mechanical back-stop are used for inclined belt conveyorsto prevent run back of the belt should apower failure occur. The backstop is builtinto the belt drive and is mounted on therotor shaft. The mechanical backstopworks in one direction only and unlessotherwise stated is supplied from factorywith a clockwise rotation when viewedfrom the terminal box end of the beltdrive.
Belt drives with electromagnetic brakeBelt drives with electromagnetic brakeare intended for use on conveyors whereautomatic braking is required in one, orboth directions.
The electromagnetic brake is a springapplied safety brake connected to therotor shaft. In a de-energised condition –power switched off – the springs pressagainst• an armature disc,• a friction lined disc and• the brake flange of the motorand the rectifier and brake coil are bothdisconnected. When power is switchedon, a magnetic field is built up. Thearmature disc is attracted (pulled) againstthe springs resulting in no frictionbetween• the armature disc,• the friction line disc and• the brake flange. The brake is now released and the rotorshaft is then able to rotate freely.A rectifier must be used.
Belt drives with special manufactureBelt drives with special power, diameters, widths, speeds, voltages or frequenciesdeviating from the standard program canbe supplied against extra charge andperhaps longer term of delivery. However, the stated minimum widths in the pro-gram cannot be reduced.

Thermal protectorThe thermal protector is a heat sensitiveswitch built into the motor winding headwhich disconnects the control powershould the motor overheat. The thermalprotector must be connected in series, with a magnetic coil/relay device andcontactor. The thermal protector willreset automatically when motor windingtemperature returns to a safe level. Thethermal protector is based on a bimetallicswitch. In the event of disconnectionplease identify the cause of overheatingbefore restarting the motor. Should thecause not be eliminated the motor mightbe damaged over time. In this case theguarantee is no longer valid.
AttentionWhen the thermal protector switch orother safety devices are activated, checkfor the cause before restarting the sys-tem. Frequent activation of the systemcan cause burnout of the windings. Insuch a case please contact Interroll.
Belt drives with rubber laggingPlain or profiled lagging is available inblack (standard) or white (food quality)colour. The lagging is normally cold vul-canised, but can be hot vulcanised forhigh power/high temperature applicationsand for belt drives with insulation class“H”. Note: All belt drive specifications are given according to the standardmotor without rubber lagging. In caseswhere the belt drive is to be rubber
lagged by the customer, it is necessaryto refer to Interroll in order to avoid heatdissipation problems and to keep guar-antee. Please also note the speed changewhen using rubber lagged pulleys.
Interroll Belt Drive – single-phase versionSingle-phase windings are manufacturedwith an auxiliary winding. The motorshould operate with a starting capacitor,a running capacitor and a relay, whichautomatically disconnects the startingcapacitor once the rated torque isreached. Belt Drives 80S and 113S oper-ate with a running capacitor only. Withouta starting capacitor, the starting torque isapprox. 70% of the nominal torque listedin the catalogue.
Certificates of approval/recognitionInterroll Belt Drives can be supplied withCSA approval (138E – 216S), UL recog-nition (80S – 138S), TÜV and FDA recog-nition. Please ask for details.

Installation andMaintenance
Mounting the Interroll Belt Drive
• Before installing the Interroll Belt Drive, please ensure the data plate informa-tion is correct to your specification.
• The Interroll Belt Drive should always bemounted horizontally, parallel to theidler pulley and square to the conveyorframe. All types of brackets must befully supported by and fastened to theconveyor frame in such a way that theshaft ends do not deform. The shaftends must always be fully supported bythe brackets. Applications for non-hori-zontal installations of more than 2° forBelt Drives 80S, 113S, 113E & 138S or5° for 138E, 165S, 165E and 216Smust be referred to Interroll.
• The shafts of Belt Drives 138E, 165S,165E and 216S are stamped with theword “Up”. During installation ensurethat “Up” mark does not appear belowthe horizontal. Serious damage mayoccur if this instruction is not followed. The instruction does not apply to BeltDrives 80S, 113S, 113E and 138S.
• The mounting brackets should be fittedin such a way that they are in contactwith the shoulder of the shaft flats. Thisis to ensure that the belt drive has noaxial clearance and to limit shaft deflec-tion to a minimum.
• Where Interroll Belt Drive brackets arenot used it is essential that at least 80%of the shaft flats are supported by themounting equipment and the clearancebetween the flats and the supportshould be less than 0.4 mm.
A belt drive with frequent reversibleoperations or many starts/stops shouldbe assembled without any clearance.
• The belt drive must always be fittedwith a conveyor belt to prevent over-heating. Belt drives fitted without a beltmust be referred to Interroll. Use drivesonly from a special range of belt drivesdeveloped for this purpose. Do not usestandard belt drives unless accepted byInterroll.
• Belt drives to be installed in ambienttemperatures below –25°C and above+40°C please consult Interroll. Pleasecheck ambient temperature limits in theenclosed list of oil contents.
• Rubber lagging can, in certain circum-stances, cause overheating of the beltdrive. Please consult Interroll for adviceon the type and maximum thickness.
• According to the European CouncilDirective relating to machinery thebelt drive must not be put into oper-ation before the motor is correctlyinstalled, correctly connected to thepower supply and protected againstrotating parts by the equipmentmanufacturer.
Belt tension
The conveyor belt should not be overtensioned, but sufficiently only to pullthe belt and load without belt slip. Formaximum belt tension see the figuresincluded in the motor specifications(Max. Radial Load in N).

Installation andMaintenance
Electrical connection
• A wiring diagram is always suppliedwith the Interroll Belt Drive. Always referto the connection instructions andensure that the motor is connected asrequired for the correct mains supply.
• The belt drive must be installed togetherwith a motor protector switch or relay. The standard 3-phase motors areequipped with a thermal protector, which is fitted into the winding head. This thermal protector will open if themotor overheats. For higher thermalprotection of the motor it should beconnected to a relay or contactor. Theprotection device must be adjusted inaccordance with the present motordata and checked frequently.
• Single-phase motors should be con-nected to a starting capacitor (113E –216S) and a running capacitor. Belt Drives 80S and 113S are, however, operating with a running capacitor onlyresulting in a limited starting torque. Therunning capacitor is supplied togetherwith the Belt Drives 138E – 216S. Asto Belt Drives 80S, 113S, 113E & 138Sthe running capacitor has to be orderedseparately.
• When a backstop is fitted to the beltdrive, please ensure that the motor isconnected for the correct direction ofrotation. Otherwise serious damagescould occur to the motor. When con-nected in accordance to the delivered
connection diagram the motor will runin the free direction.
• When an electromagnetic brake is fittedto the belt drive it will be supplied witha rectifier and has to be connectedaccording to instructions. The rectifierhas an input AC-voltage and outputDC-voltage. The electromagnetic brakeis operated by direct voltage (DC).Therefore it must not be connected toan AC-voltage supply.
• The Interroll Belt Drive is designed fordirect starting. Please be aware thatwhen connecting to a soft start devicee.g. star/delta switch, the power of themotor during start will be drasticallyreduced and could cause overheatingof the motor. As a safety measure, please use the earth screw present inthe terminal box.
• If the Interroll Belt Drive with cableoption is connected to a frequencyconverter, the cable has to be screenedor covered with a screening tube/sleeveaccording to the European CouncilDirective relating to “electromagneticcompatibility” – EMC89/336/ECC.
• Connection of the belt drive must beperformed by a specialist in accordancewith the electrical regulations. If in doubt, please refer to Interroll.

Installation andMaintenance
Before starting the belt drive
• Ensure the belt drive is wired correctlyand that it is connected to the correctsupply voltage.
• Ensure that oil is present in the beltdrive.
• Ensure that the belt drive and conveyorbelt is free to rotate.
• Ensure that the belt tension is sufficientto transmit belt pull; avoid overtension.
Maintenance
• If repair or maintenance is required, thebelt drive has to be disconnected fromthe supply before the terminal box canbe opened.
Interroll Belt Drives 80S & 113S
• These belt drives are factory oil filled forlife according to list of oil contents. Nooil change or maintenance is necessarythroughout its operational life, exceptwhere fitted with regreasable seals.
All other belt drive versions
• The Interroll Belt Drives are normallymaintenance free and require no spe-cific attention during their operation. They are ready for operation immedi-ately after connection to the powerstation.
• All belt drives are factory oil filledaccording to the enclosed list of oilcontents. The first oil change is recom-mended after 10,000 operational hoursand then approximately every 10,000hours. Please note that the oil plug withmagnet must be cleaned after every oilchange.
• The oil filter/drain plugs are located onthe shell end housing (113E – 216S).When refilling with oil, please refer tothe enclosed list of oil content shown inlitres or to the belt drive data plate.

Installation andMaintenance
Interroll Belt Drives fitted with regreasable IP66/67 seals
• Regreasable IP66/67 seals must be re-greased regularly with antifrictionbearing grease in accordance with theoperating conditions. If installed inaggressive environments and in contin-uous contact with water, salt, dust etc.,or when working under full load it willbe necessary to re-grease more fre-quently. If the belt drive is cleaned bymeans of special chemical detergents,high-pressure water or steam, re-greas-ing should take place more frequentlyaccording to the operating conditionsand the cleaning process, when suchclearing removes the grease from theseals. Please note that re-greasablebelt drives are not suitable for under-water applications.
Oil characteristics
• Do not use oil containing additives, which may damage the motor insulationor seals. Furthermore, graphite, molyb-denum disulphide or other electricalconductive-based oils must not beused as they will cause damage to themotor.
Service and after sales
• Always contact your local Interroll part-ner or official distributor.
