West Head Aboriginal Excursion

Maths Challenge Camp

On Monday, 12 November, I went on an Aboriginal Excursion to West Head. When we got there, I saw rock carvings and the girls went to a special place by themselves. Next, I got to try some bush tucker. I tried kangaroo meat, Rosella jam and Lilli Pilli jam. I built a Gunya (which means shelter) with some help from other students. Later, we saw some goannas when we went walking in the bush. We also saw some Aboriginal art rock prints in a cave. We were shown how to weave a rope. My favourite part was making the Gunya.

Maths Challenge Camp Report by Tokiwa, Sarah, Charlotte and Ben J On 5 and 6 November the four of us were lucky enough to go to a maths camp at Elanora Heights Conference Centre. We learnt lots about the Fibonacci sequence, Tessellations and so much more. There were four groups: Escher, Fibonacci, Pascal and Plato. We enjoyed the Spirolaterals, the Fibonacci sequence and making shapes. There was also delicious food and great equipment for playing! Mr Davidson was also there and he taught us some amazing things! Maths Challenge camp is an opportunity for four Year 5 students from the North Beaches schools. It is facilitated by Laurinda Lomas (Deputy Principal, Elanora Height Public School) my self and four other keen passionate teachers to assist. The aim is to introduce the students to the framework of “thinking like a mathematician”. Thinking like a Mathematician uses the precepts of:

Defining the problem Experimenting Collecting and organising data Seeking a pattern Hypothesising and testing The students are also challenged to make a new friend from another school during the two day event.

Friday 8 November Year 6 went out on a bus to Narrabeen. Belrose girls A played three games. Our first game was against Harbord PS. The score was 2-4, we lost. Our second game was against Mimosa. The score was 4-2 and we won. Our final game was against Narrabeen. The score was 4-3 and we won. Overall I think Belrose did extremely well since most people haven’t played Eagle Tag before.

By Ellen W On Thursday 8 November Year 6 had an Eagle Tag Gala Day. We all had so much fun. The Year 6 girls B’s unfortunately lost all out games but they were all very close. We all played very well together and cheered each other on.

Eagle Tag Cont...

On Thursday 8 November most of year 6 went to play Eagle Tag at Rat Park. The A boys team played really well but we didn’t make the finals. We played 4 games. We lost 1, won 1 and had 2 draws. It was really fun.

By Alex C

Eagle Tag was great. Will R and Liam B both scored multiple goals each but in my opinion Will R was the best and most valua-ble player.
