BELO HORIZONTE, BRAZIL'S CURA FESTIVALRECAPAugust 25, 2017

The past weeks—from July 26th to August 6th—the third biggest city of Brazil received in

downtown the first edition of CURA - Urban Art Circuit. CURA is the

first building painting festival in Belo Horizonte, and the third of its kind in Brazil.

The Festival aimed to transform the landscape of BH, rescuing the trajectory of urban art in

the city and recognizing its current dimension and strength in the country and in the world.

Featured four large format  murals, located in the blind sides of 4 buildings in the center of

the city. The selection of the walls was made from a urbanist perspective: all four lateral

sides will be simultaneously seen from Sapucaí street by the new and first street

art viewpoint of the world, in which the Festival is helping to create.

Five national and international artists with experience painting large-scale murals (3 women

and 2 men) were invited to be part of the Festival: Thiago Mazza and Priscila Amoni, from

Belo Horizonte; the Acidum Project from Fortaleza, formed by the artists Tereza Dequinta

and Robézio Marqs; and the Spanish artist Marina Capdevilla that is visiting Brazil for the first

time.

"The Rooster and the Fox" by Thiago Mazza tells a classic fable of these two animals that arenatural rivals. On receiving the invitation to paint in Cura, Thiago Mazza had the idea to portraythis tale since the rooster and fox are also the mascots of the two main teams of the state of MinasGerais. The work has a circular movement that makes reference to the yin-yang in which theopposites balance and without one another would not make sense. "Dralamaale" by PriscilaAmoni she painted a woman surrounded through the power of plants. The dracena in the lefthand evokes strength. Lavender and rosemary, in the right hand, calm and joy. finally on her head represent the beauty of the female figure. This is her desire for healing ofhumanity and the healing of the city of Belo Horizonte. "Healers" by Acidum Project t The “healers”, wise women, with roots in the forest and with the power to energize everything theytouch. The two central characters are being healed and in an acidic and vibrant atmosphere. "ACarinhosas" by Marina Capdevila is a representation of an important political movement thathas been gaining strength in recent years in Belo Horizonte: The carnival itself. It is a tradition tosing the song "Carinhoso" by Pixinguinha to the grandparents who appear at the windows, whenthe carnival passes by their houses.The festival also had an extensive cultural program with discussion panels about art, parties,

an art bazar, film screenings and guided tour of the murals of Belo Horizonte.

The project had the main purpose to “create as many graffiti and muralism spots as possible

in Belo Horizonte, and take advantage of the geography that could create of this landscape,

a new point of view,” affirmed Juliana, co-director of the festival.
