With summer in full swing and the 4th of July almost upon us, I have to ask “Where does the time go?” Planning is already underway for all of our events through year-end. Just around the corner is our 4th of July BBQ. Please, let’s all keep our fingers crossed that for once it doesn’t rain when we’ve planned to barbecue on the grill outside! Our employees will be celebrated the week of Aug. 17–21 with a yet to be revealed theme and an agenda of fun scheduled every day. We’d love for all of you to participate in our celebration, too. Saturday, Aug. 29, is the Senior Symposium. We’ve invited a panel of experts to join us for the day to answer questions and be available on a wide array of topics. While in ancient Greece, the symposium was a drinking party. We’ll be sticking more to the basics with refreshments available. September 7 is the Labor Day BBQ, Rosh Hashanah and Grandparents Day, Sunday, Sept. 13, Yom Kippur, Tuesday, Sept. 22, and Wednesday, Sept. 30, “Ask The Expert” with Belmont’s very own Beverly Sanborn, Gerontologist and VP of Programming. Austin’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Camp Mabry, Oct. 31 Halloween and we hope to see the little ones (and big ones) in their costumes once again this year. Of course, with the coming of November and December, we have the holidays. Save the date! One special note is that on Friday, Nov. 6, the noted photographer Tom Sanders will be here to take the portraits of our veteran residents. Many of you may be familiar with his work, as his book is displayed in the Great Room called The Last Good War. Portraits Tom has taken of residents from other Belmont Village communities are displayed on the 2nd and 3rd floors here as well. Please stay tuned for more details as Veterans Day is just a few days later on Wednesday, Nov. 11. As many of you are planning vacations and some getaway time, I wish you and your families a safe and happy 4th of July and summer vacation season. Cheers! Donna

and recruiting members, thegarden club is looking forward toan exciting new month ofplanting, planning and learning.

The club has decided to focuson two projects initially. The firstproject will be to plant an herbgarden for Chef Mike outside ofJosephine’s Kitchen. The gardenwill be planted in raised beds sothat residents are able to work inthe garden beds from a seated orstanding position.

Birds & ButterfliesOur second project will be to

focus on attracting more birds andbutterflies to our property. Lastmonth’s guest speaker, JaneTillman of the Audubon andTexas Native Plant Societies, toured the property and gave usmany wonderful suggestions thatwe will be able to implement inthe coming months.

Memory CareSpecialists: A View

From the Inside

By Nan Stubblefield,Circle of Friends

My year at Belmont preparedme to receive the greatest gift ofmy life!

I have just returned to myposition as Memory CareSpecialist with the Belmont Circleof Friends after being away forseveral weeks. I was in upstateNew York tending to myterminally ill mother who wasdiagnosed with cancer in Februaryand living alone.

I had no idea what difficulties Iwould be facing as I was travelingto New York, but knew that, allthings considered, it would not beeasy. I was going to be the solecare provider for my mother—could I even do this? While thenatural order of things dictatesthat children should outlive theirparents, the loss of a parent is stillone of the most devastatingexperiences in many people’s

lives. As parents age and theirhealth becomes fragile, grownchildren often take on the role ofcaretaker. Unlike professionalcaretakers, family members whotake on the responsibility of dailycare of a loved one are alsodealing with their own emotionsabout the impending loss of theirparent.

The diagnosis of a terminalillness frequently causes dramaticincreases in the care that parentsneed, and the parent/childrelationship may becomecompletely reversed, with parentsdependent on their children fortheir daily care. Providing care fora terminally ill family membercan be very demanding, bothphysically and emotionally.Caregivers frequently findthemselves overwhelmed by stressand anxiety, sometimes leading toburnout. There is a professionalterm used by Hospice called“Caregiver Breakdown” and thecaregiver is encouraged to take fivedays of respite per month.

As I already knew, end-of-lifecare is far more wide reachingthan simply managingmedications and personalhygiene; emotional and spiritualneeds must be addressed, too. Thenotion of death as a faraway eventis far different than realizing thatthe time is near—terminally illpatients are likely to feel senses ofurgency about matters that theyfeel are unsettled.

One thing I did not know was

how valuable my training andexperience at Belmont VillageWLH would turn out to be. Itoccurred to me that, had mymother been ill one year earlier,I would not have been nearly asprepared to provide her with thepatient and loving care that sheboth needed and deserved.Much more than the training Ireceived, my relationships withall of the residents, Pals, nursesand RehabCare Therapy Teamprovided me with the tools Ineeded to turn my mom’s lastdays into the most loving andbeautiful experience of my life.

Families Together:Strong Together

Here at Belmont Village, weoffer a monthly discussiongroup, focused on providinginformation and support forfamily members caring for lovedones with dementia. “FamiliesTogether” meets the fourthWednesday of the month at5:30 p.m. and is facilitated byChristina Wilkins, Director ofMemory Care Programming. It isa safe place to exchangeinformation, support andfriendship with others whoselives are affected by dementia. Itis a forum for sharing practicaltips and strategies for copingwith the many changesconnected with the disease and aplace to express feelings and bereassured that these feelings arenormal and expected.
