A Note FromJeanne’s Journal
A few years ago, as my daughterwas working on her weddingpreparations, in a very imprompturequest, she asked my mom andme to take a picture of our lefthands intertwined with hers.Although the photo was taken soquickly on a simple cell phone, itis truly one of my most belovedkeepsakes. In addition to thephoto showing the age and textureof our skin, our various rings arealso visible.
I know the story of our rings. Iknow that my mom never had anengagement ring. For almost herentire life, she wore a simpleplatinum band. When she and mydad were engaged, my mom was anurse. She always said that, as anurse, she wasn’t allowed to wearanything but very simple jewelry. An engagement ring with a stonewould violate the dress code andinfection control policies that, as anurse, she very much wanted touphold. Many decades later, mymom had the stone from mygrandmother’s wedding bandmade into a ring. My oldest sisterwears that ring today.
I miss my mom. I miss hervoice. I miss her advice. And mostof all, I miss her touch. When Ilook at the photo of our hands, millions of loving memories of
my mom come back to me.I never realized how much our
hands tell our story until I had thehonor of being involved in theHands of Love project at ourcommunity. We had the distinctprivilege of working with BecciHethcoat, photographerextraordinaire, and BelmontVillage family member (extrabonus). Becci’s incrediblephotography talents captured theessence of our residents’ storiesthrough the portraits of theirhands. If you haven’t had theopportunity to see our Hands ofLove Gallery, located on the 1stand 3rd floors at Belmont Village,I encourage you to do so.Furthermore, I sincerely thankthose residents and their familymembers who allowed us to takethese photographs and who sowillingly shared their stories withus. Your photos are absolutelyamazing and have forever touchedour hearts.
“Your hands tell the story of yourlife. They tell the story of love, ofcare and adventure. These thingshave touched and held things that
most people can only wish toone day.”

Melon MakeoverWatermelon is a warm-weather
favorite, but can be bulky tohandle—until now. Japanesefarmers have been growing thefruit in square shapes, makingthem easier to stack and store. Thenovelty melons are used mostlyfor decoration, and they can bepricey, with some shoppers payingmore than $100 for a singlemelon.

“A Word FromMBA Member”
Agnes GrabackiHello Folks,Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Hear Ye. First
thank you, Roy (who is our nightnurse), for giving me hispermission to write a “tidbit”about him. Folks, did you knowthat Roy can sing a few lines of thepolish song “My Melody of Love”by Bobby Vinton? Roy doesn’t justsing this song—he sings it in thePolish language, pronouncingeach word beautifully. Roy hasbeen singing these few lines sincehe was 11 years old. Recently, helearned another line. Roy can alsodance to the song. What is soamazing to me, and I hope to you,is that Roy is of Philippineheritage and that would make ithard to pronounce polish words, but he does it beautifully. Roy isan amazing guy and nurse.Submitted by Agnes Grabacki.

Hydration and SeniorsAre you drinking enough
water? Although the amount ofwater a person needs to drinkvaries, a general rule of thumb isat least eight 8-oz. glasses per day.
Our bodies use the water wedrink to replenish the moisture welose throughout the day. Water isneeded to hydrate blood andtissue, lubricate joints, regulatebody temperature, promote digestion and plays anintegral part in ridding one’s bodyof waste. More than 50% of one’sbody is comprised of water, making it a vital part inmaintaining a healthy body.
If we fail to replace the waterour body has used, we may sufferfrom dehydration. Dehydration isa physiological state where one’sbody does not have enough fluidsto perform its functions.
Seniors are very susceptible todehydration and must be sure tostay properly hydrated. Seniors areless likely than younger adults torealize that they are thirsty, causing them to drink fewerliquids. At the same time, theymight routinely take medicationsand/or ingest caffeinated andalcoholic drinks, which havediuretic effects. Furthermore, thekidneys of some older adults may
have a reduced ability to regulatetheir body’s water levels.
Taking a deliberate role instaying hydrated is very importantfor seniors; therefore, here areseveral ways to help keep yourselfand your loved ones hydrated:
• Don’t wait until you arethirsty to drink.
• Drink at least 8 glasses ofliquids per day.
• When at home, keep ice anddrinks within reach for easieraccess.
• Drink frequently during thedaytime rather than drinkinglarge amounts at one time.
• Eat fresh fruits and vegetableswith high water content(watermelon, lettuce, etc.).
