• Understanding that your PHYSICAL appearance is only part of who you are.

• See your body as it really is

Negative Body Image

-You see your body differently than it actually is

-Think others find you unattractive -See your shape as a sign of failure

What are some ways in which we are different?

Ways in which we are different: height, weight, hair/eye color, likes/dislikes, interests

Some of these qualities we can change, while others we cannot.

Something to think about…

• 1 out of every 2 healthy women think they are overweight.

• 50% of third graders wish • they were thinner.

• 4 out of 5 ten year olds are afraid to be overweight.

Compulsive Eating

• Extreme eating disorder that can lead to sickness & death.

• 70% are women, 30% Men

• Disease usually strikes during teen years

• Psychological, emotional, and physical conditionDepression, Low Self-Esteem, Control Issues

Anorexia Nervosa• AKA : Anorexia• Starve self to lose weight• Condition begins gradually• Eat small amounts of food • Fasting: Not eating for long periods of time

Bulimia Nervosa• AKA: Bulimia• Vomit to rid what food

was consumed• May also use laxatives, drugs, or

diuretics.• Binging: Eating large amount of food in

one sitting.• Binge & Purge: Eat large amt & vomit

Compulsive Eating & Binge

• Frequently eating large amounts of food without purging

• Eat whether they are hungry or not• Eat in private• After eating, feel depressed & guilty• Using exercise to get rid of calories• May be combined with eating disorder
