In your own words… Tell me everything you remember about the
water cycle. It’s okay if you forgot! BRAINSTORM! See what you can come up with by yourself
Take out your homework (independent practice and readings from last week!) Go over responses
THE WATER CYCLE
Objective for the day
By the end of the day…
SWBAT explain and trace the possible paths of water through the water cycle.
The Water Cycle
What is the water cycle?
The water cycle describes the continuous movement of water above and below the surface of the Earth.
Change in state of matter Water can change states of matter from
liquid, solid, and vapor at various stages of the water cycle.
What drives the water cycle?
The Sun
What drives the water cycle? Gravity is also driving the water cycle.
Steps of the Water Cycle
Evaporation
Most evaporation takes place over the ocean. Some water evaporates from lakes and rivers. Plants release water to the air through transpiration. Liquid is becoming a gas.
Transpiration
Condensation
Condensation
Clouds form as the water vapor cools. Gas is becoming a liquid.
Precipitation
When the water droplets become heavy enough, they fall back to Earth as precipitation.
Runoff and Groundwater Some water runs off along the ground surface. Some
water soaks into the ground and becomes groundwater. Groundwater flows underground and eventually may flow into a body of water.
Animals
A constant supply?
The water cycle renews the usable supply of fresh water on Earth.
For millions of years, the total amount of water on Earth has remained fairly constant.
How so? The amounts of evaporation and precipitation
balance each other.
No Real End Water moves continuously through the
water cycle. The cycle has no real beginning or end.
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WATER CYCLE

Practice Questions
1) What are the four main steps of the water cycle? 2) What is evaporation from plants called? 3) T/F: “Every water droplet always follows the
same path.” 4) Condensation is when a gas becomes a ________. 5) Evaporation is when a liquid becomes a
________. 6) Groundwater eventually dumps into what? 7) Name two forms of precipitation.
Exit Ticket
