Charles the Great

• By 800, Charles’s kingdom had grown into an empire.

• His victories won him the name Charles the Great, or Charlemagne.

Charles the Great

• On Christmas day in 800, the Pope placed a crown on Charlemagne’s head and named him the new Roman emperor.

• Charlemagne was concerned that the Pope might be viewed with too much power because of this.

Pope Gregory VII• In 597, Pope Gregory I sent out Catholic

missionaries to convert Europeans to Christianity.

• By the 1000s, the Catholic Church had become very powerful.

Pope Gregory VII

• European kings wanted church leaders to obey them, but Popes believed the kings should obey the Church.

• In 1073, Pope Gregory VII declared that only the Pope could choose Church officials.

• Pope Gregory’s decision angered Henry IV, the Holy Roman Emperor.

Henry IV

• When Henry IV became angry with Pope Gregory VII, the Pope said Henry IV was no longer emperor.

• The nobles of Henry’s kingdom supported the Pope, so Henry changed his mind and asked for forgiveness.

Henry IV

• Pope Gregory forgave Henry, but the nobles chose a new emperor.

• Henry IV became angry again, and chose a new Pope.

Henry IV

• This power struggle lasted until 1122, when a new king and new pope agreed that only the pope could choose church officials, and only the king could choose government officials.

• This agreement was called the Concordat of Worms (as it was signed in a city called Worms).
