St. Bernadette, Pray For Us

Fr Harry Buseness

It seems to me that July is the most popular month for summer family vacations. This begins with the 4th of July week/weekend and continues throughout the month. In my childhood, we often took a little vacation at this time, since the farm work was less demanding at this time, while the crops were growing. I also realize that youth sports games back off toward the end of July, as summer vacation winds down and preparations begin for the upcoming school year. As you plan your summer vacation, don’t neglect your spiritual life. First of all, many people spend a part of their vacation at a park, a lake or perhaps in the mountains where they can enjoy the beauty and wonder of the world around us. Many people feel a special closeness to God in these settings. Indeed, God does reveal Himself to us through the beauty of nature. When I was a child and we went on family vacations, often fishing trips in Minnesota or South Dakota, we always made arrangements to include Sunday Mass, if we were away over a weekend. (We also included saying the rosary in the car each day as we traveled. I still remember the unique accent of my grandpa as he led the Hail Mary). I believe that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass applies while on vacation as well as on any other weekend. Traveling does not excuse you from this obligation. People should plan ahead to include Mass along with their other activities. This applies also to families going out of town for various ball games and tournaments. I would hope that sincere, dedicated Catholic families would look at this situation, not just as an obligation, but as an opportunity to continue to grow in your faith, to continue to praise God all the days of your life, to draw on the graces needed each day in your lives and to witness to your children about the importance of having God in your lives all of the time. We may take a vacation from school, from work and from the regular routine of our lives. But we do not take a vacation from our relationship with God, just like we do not take a vacation from important relationships in our lives, like our spouse or our children. When you travel this summer, be sure to include God in your travels and to include Sunday Mass in your weekend schedule. And may God bless you and protect you along the way.

Quote / Reflection: The command to the Twelve to go out and proclaim the Good News is also valid for all Christians, though in a different way.... the Good News of the kingdom which is coming and which has begun is meant for all people of all times. Those who have received the Good News and who have been gathered by it into the community of salvation can and must communicate and spread it. Pope St. Paul VI FORMED Registration: Go to the parish website – stbernadetteparish.org and find the box for ‘FORMED’. Click on ‘REGISTER NOW’ and follow the instructions. No access code needed.

Prayer Line

Vocations A priest does not stop being a man when he becomes a priest. Priests are men. Whether you are called to married life or priesthood, chastity invigorates manliness and unifies the mind, body and heart. In contrast, an unchaste man soon finds his mind, body and heart at odds, leaving him feeling ashamed, weak, pulled apart. Perhaps more clearly than any other sins, sins against chastity tear apart the soul. Living chastely strengthens you. A priest needs strength and courage to be a provider, to be generous, to promote life. A man brings all that to the priesthood and the Lord’s grace takes all of those natural instincts, drives and desires and makes him into a Godly, Holy Priest. A Godly Priest, then, provides spiritual nourishment via the sacraments (especially the Holy Eucharist), he generously avails himself for the needs of his parish family, and he presents and defends the truth so that his flock “might have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10. This week pray for Seminarian Paul Floersch. Read his vocations story and biography at https://archomaha.org/vocations/seminary-life/Paul-Floersch/ “Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.” (Luke 9:16) Are you being called to set the Lord’s food before the crowd as a priest? Contact Father Harry Buse at 402‐731‐4694 or email: [email protected].

Recently a group of ladies from St. Bernadette’s, St Mary’s and St Thomas More enjoyed 3 day silent Ignatian retreat. Next year the retreat for our parish will begin on May 30, 2020. you are invited to go to cloistersontheplatte.com and sign up. You may attend any of the retreats if that date doesn’t work for you.
