Freeholder Brendan Gill Announces Carpenter Avenue Expansion Plan

As County Grants Belleville Right of Way

Newark -- Essex County Freeholder Brendan Gill announced today that the freeholder board has voted to grant

the Township of Belleville authority to expand the portion of Carpenter Avenue adjacent to the landmark Essex

    County Geriatrics Center.

Of the procedure, Brendan Gill mentioned, We voted to auction off the old Geriatrics Center. Now, were

making sure that land use issues are taken care of. Gill, in concurrence with a prior request from Belleville

officials, voted to grant Belleville authority to adjust the portion of the facilitywhich is County property

where it abuts Carpenter Avenue. Gill further stated, Since part of that property borders Carpenter Avenue, itsbest if the Township gets full control that land so that they can make the necessary changes to Carpenter in the

    best interests of public safety.

    On November 20th

, the freeholders voted to auction off the former Essex County Geriatrics Center, deeming the

property to be of no further use to the county. Following meetings in Newark and Belleville this month, county

officials will hold the auction, after which the freeholders must again vote to accept the highest bid that the

county administration receives. The property which abuts Carpenter Avenue, and which is now turned over to

Belleville, is not useable for any other purpose other than roadway expansion.

The Geriatrics Center has been the focus of a lot of attention in recent years. Gill added. Its an historic

building, so its a shame that it ended up in the state it was. As for Carpenter Avenue, Im I voted to approvethe right of way, and Im confident the road widening will have real benefits to drivers in Belleville going

    forward.
