City Asking Residents, Businesses And Home Owners Associations To Remove Standing Water

Recent rains provide breeding conditions for mosquitoes, West Nile VirusRecent heavy rainfall was a welcome relief to the Central Texas

drought. However, the standing water left over from the rains is an ideal habitat for mosquitoes to lay eggs which will grow into larvae and eventually new mosquitoes which can carry West Nile Virus. In light of recent reports of mosquitoes carrying WNV in Texas and a WNV death in Williamson County, the City of Cedar Park is asking all residents, businesses home owners associations to please inspect their properties for standing water and remove it right away.

“It is very important that citizens do their part to eliminate any potential mosquito breeding grounds,” Cedar Park Emergency Management Coordinator Michael Clanton says. “West Nile Virus should be taken seriously, and it is important that everyone does their part to keep the community safe.”

Places to look include wheelbarrows, rain gutters, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other

containers where mosquitoes can breed. The Williamson County and Cities Health District also recommends taking the following steps to eliminate stagnant water:

• Emptyandchangethewaterinpetdrinkingbowls,birdbaths,fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays every 4 to 5 days to destroy potential mosquito habitats• Drainorfilltemporarypoolsofwaterwithdirt• Keepswimmingpoolwatertreatedandcirculating• Cleanoutraingutters• Removediscardedtiresorkeepthemdryandcovered• Addanaeratortopondsandwatergardensoraddfishthatwill eat mosquitos and larvae• Removedebris(leaves,twigs,trash)fromditchesandlowareas• Fillinrutsandholesthatcollectstandingwater

Forareaswherestandingwatercannotberemoved,theCityasks residents and business owners to add the bacterial agent Bacillusthuringiensis(Bt),whichmaybepurchasedatmosthomeimprovement stores. Bt is a naturally occurring disease of insects that is commonly used to treat stagnant water for mosquitoes.

To report potential mosquito habitats such as stagnant water ponds, abandoned swimming pools, or discarded tires, please call the City of Cedar Park’s Code Enforcement Division at 512-401-5206.

The City also recommends that everyone avoid mosquito stings and West Nile Virus by wearing insect repellant and long sleeved shirts with long pants outdoors, and stay indoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

The Johnson family of Cedar Park, TX, featured in the attached photos,adoptedatwoyearoldAmericanPitBullmixnamedSonyainApril 2011.After experiencing theheartbreaking loss of theirdog,Aries,whowaswith the family for12wonderfulyears andthroughout the lifetimes of the Johnson family’s two daughters, theydecidedtoadoptashelterdoginmemoryofAries.Thefamily’spositive adoption experience convinced them to submit a featured hero application to HSWC. EricJohnsonsaysthat,“Aswewentbytheoutdoorpens,asmall

She didn’t bark, just looked up at my girls like shewassaying,“It’sok.Thingswillgetbetter!”SamiandErika(theJohnsonfamily’sdaughters)lostit.Samiimmediatelysaid,“Thisismy new dog!” Erika agreed.” Eric went on to say that he got tears in his eyes as he witnessed the exchange between Sonya and his girls. Their adoption story goes on to tell of coincidences with HSWC volunteers at Eric’s workplace, Sonya’s intake date of nearly one year prior being the same as Cinda Johnson’s birthday, and the kisses received from Sonya through her kennel walls when the family returnedtoHSWCtofinalizeheradoption.

“Sonya has been practically perfect in every way,” continued Eric. “She is house broken... sits, lays down, and comes when called... but most of all she is a constant companion with my girls and Cinda and me. She even rotates sleeping at the foot of the bed of the girls andmeandmomma.Finally,Ijustwanttothanktheshelterstafffor not giving up on Sonya. I know deep down inside, she was just waiting for us... to heal us and become one of us!”

We know it’s tempting, but most Thanksgiving scraps are not safest treat for your pets. Cooked turkey bones are a big no-no as they can splinter and result in a trip to pet ER. Additionally,overindulging your pet in other fatty foods can lead to stomach upset, diarrhea or even life-threatening pancreatitis. Other items to avoid are onion, sage, garlic ... and please, don’t ever give your pet alcohol.
