What defines a Healthy Person?

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

The Definition has not been amended since 1948.

Modern DefinitionYou have been tasked with rewriting the definition for “health”.

Think about your definition

Write your definition on a piece of paper and draw a picture symbolizing “health”

Cluster into groups of four and share your definition with the group

As a group, write a new definition to share with the class

What Determines Health?

Life ExpectancyThe number of years a person is expected to live.

Quality of LifeThe degree of overall satisfaction a person gets from life.

What is the top cause of death in the United States? Where does Nebraska rank?

What state has the highest teen death rate? Where does Nebraska rank in regards to teen death rate?

What is the leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds in the United States?

Quality of LifeYour Quality of Life is impacted through four domains:

Physical Health

Mental Health

Emotional Health

Social Health

Domain: Physical Health

Physical ActivityShould be a mix of leisure and structured activity.

Nutrition and DietA Well balanced diet should contain a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals

Alcohol and DrugsSubstances that alter mood or other bodily processes should be limited or avoided.

Those with addictive tendencies or other health risks should consider complete abstinence from these substances.

Domain: Physical Health

Medical Self CareBasic items, such as bandages, lozenges, and over-the-counter pain-relieving medications, should be easily accessible from home.

Long-term coughing, fevers, or other ailments should be addressed through primary care. Emergency treatment should be sought when signs and symptoms are significant or life-threatening.

Rest and SleepWhile regular activity is essential for physical health, allowing the body to rest is just as important.

Spending time relaxing or taking short naps can help rejuvenate the body.

Sleep should take place in a quiet, dark environment and should last approximately 7-9 hours.
