Noun: a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea Types of Nouns: Common nouns: every day names (month, country, teacher) Proper nouns: particular names that are capitalized (June, England, Mr. Hernandez) Concrete nouns: things that can be seen, heard, felt, touched, or smelled (water, book, flower) Abstract nouns: concepts, beliefs, or qualities (freedom, love, courage) Collective nouns: refer to a group (army, herd, team, family)

Directions: Tell if each underlined noun is proper, concrete, abstract, or collective

Verb: a word that expresses an action, condition, or state of being Types: Action Verbs: May be physical or mental (knocked / wanted) Linking Verbs: Do not express an action—they link sentence parts together.

Exercise: Identifying Action and Linking Verbs. Circle the noun(s) and underline the verb(s) in each sentence. Above each verb, write A if it is an action verb or L if it is a linking verb. Remember—some sentences might have more than one verb.

Pronoun: A word that takes the place of a noun in a sentence. Common pronouns include I, me, my our, their, someone, everybody, we.

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. Adjectives can come in different places within a sentence.

Examples:The soft, cuddly puppy fell asleep in my lap. (before a noun)

The puppy, soft and cuddly, fell asleep in my lap. (after a noun) The puppy is soft and cuddly. (after a linking verb)

Directions: Identify the adjectives in each of the following sentences.

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They often answer the questions HOW, WHERE, or WHEN. Often end in -ly.

An interjection is a word added to a sentence to convey an emotion or a sentiment such as surprise, disgust, joy, excitement, or enthusiasm.

An interjection is not grammatically related to any other part of the sentence. Interjections can also be sounds such as Phew! or Mmmm.

Prepositions are the words that indicate location. Usually, prepositions show this location in the physical world. Check out the three examples below:
