Vital Church Initiative Needs You We need your help now in OUR Vital Church Initiative The Vital Church Initiative (VCI) is off and running and there are several immediate activities that we would like to have you participate in if you can. Please note the following areas where we will need your help: All-congregation book study of WHO STOLE MY CHURCH? by Gordon
McDonald: This study group will prepare us for the consultation event’s focus on a sustainable future for our congregation. For those of you in the congregation who already have a book and are committed to doing the study—remember that there are two ways to participate. You may come to a group study on Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00 PM in Room 215 where you will work together to discuss the questions VCI has given us for each chapter. The second option is to take a question packet home and do the study on your own and then turn it in so that it can be shared with the VCI team as they take a look at who we are as a church.
The study is intended to equip us to be in prayerful expectation and planning for the discernment of God’s will for this congregation in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The purpose of the questions is to provide insight into the pulse of our church using the book as a reference point.
VCI Prayer Team: We are looking for 3-5 people (or more) to get together
weekly to pray for our Church and the VCI Team. We all know the life-changing effect that prayer can have on our Church. Please raise your hand to help out! We are planning to start as soon as possible.
Readiness360 Survey: All Church Members are asked to take an online survey
to measure our Church’s current ministry-readiness capacity. Our goal is 100% participation. The survey has been launched on our website. An email blast was sent out recently with instructions on how to complete the survey. If you have questions regarding the survey, please see Kevin Harlow or a member of your VCI Team. Please complete your survey by Monday, October 3.
If you do not have a computer or you don’t have internet access, please contact the church office to set up a time so you can come into the church to take the survey. Please allow at least 20 minutes or so to take the survey once you are set up. Office staff will be on hand to help if needed.

Thank You Church Family for all the thoughts, prayers, cards and the prayer quilt given during my sister’s illness and death. ~Blessings to you, Linda Merchberger Thank you for all the cards, prayers and visits before, during, and following my surgery. The prognosis is good – but prayers are still welcome. We’ve felt your prayers and God’s presence in our lives. God is Good…all the time! ~Rob Adair For everything you’ve done…for being the special people that you are…thank you so very much. For all the hard work the Pastie workers put in to make a difference in the lives of not 1 but 4 children this past summer at church camp! They had the best time!! Again – Thank You. ~Bethel UMC

God’s Grace
I turn back, there’s no one around me… But I prayed, I realize God is there with me… I turn back, I have nothing on my hand… But when I pray, I realize the kingdom of heaven is with me I turn back, I see weakness in me… But when I pray, I realize that I am a child of God I turn back, every road is closed… But when I pray, I realize the door of heaven is opened for me I turn back, the world is desolate, plain, and empty… But when I pray, I realize there is eternity and life-everlasting in Christ. I turn back, I thought I did everything… But when I pray, I realize it was all by God’s Grace. Poem by Rev Won D. Kim
Can You Help In These Mission Outreaches? The P.E.T. Pie Sale Is Coming! Please
see Ric Noll to order your choice of Apple ($12), Cherry ($14), Blueberry ($14), and Raspberry ($14) pies. The money raised by the pie sale will help in the manufacture of the Pull PET vehicle which is used to provide people with the gift of mobility around the world. Pie orders will be taken at church beginning Sunday, October 2.
The pies will be available for pick up at GUMC on Tuesday, November 22.
Just Save A Receipt For This One: Here’s an easy way to support the Christian nurture and training our children and youth receive in Sunday School. If you shop at Bueche’s Food World in Ortonville, just save those receipts and turn them in at the Recycling Center in the first Storage Bay in the Fellowship Area at Church. There will be a labeled box on the shelf.
Give $$$ Back to Our Church by Choosing Ferrellgas Propane You know how successful the SCRIP program has been in the church, right? Well, the offer we have been given from FERRELLGAS works the same way. It just takes one call to the company to tell them you want to enroll in the Church Fundraising program, and Goodrich United Methodist Church will get 5% back from what ever you spend to fill your propane tank. Your tank could be at your home, cottage, motor home, or mother’s home or kids’ home. It doesn't matter where in Michigan the tank is. Advertise this to neighbors and friends, as anyone can be included. The first fill will be only $ .99 / gallon, and thereafter will be $1.39/gallon.
Already a Ferrellgas customer? Just call the number below and tell them you want to be included in this program.
Contact Roxanne at Ferrellgas 800-395 -4535.
It’s time to be thinking (and writing) about the God Moments you’ve been blessed with. Please share them with others in our devotional for Lent in 2017. Please give your submissions to Kathy Adair either by hand or by email ([email protected]) by mid-November. If you have questions, please call Kathy at (810) 636-4011.
A heartfelt thank you to Nancy Tenniswood for making all of the sashes for the youth to have for the Awana program. The sash will hold pins and patches each child earns as they go through the program.

Continue The Vision During last year's Stewardship Campaign we looked at what our Church might be able to achieve through visioning. And the theme was Fulfilling The Vision. This year the Finance Committee is challenging the congregation to "Continue the Vision". There is still much to accomplish including being able to fund a full- time Youth Minister. Last year, we asked the Congregation to give 10% more
and many of the congregation found a way to increase their giving. Unfortunately, while giving per unit increased, we saw a 12% decrease in the number of giving units. But through the congregation's generosity this year, we have been able to achieve a financial stability that has been missing in our finances for many years. In fact 2015 ended with a $9,000 deficit even with a generous donation from one individual as well as another from the Pastie Committee. What we were able to accomplish this year was to pay back the $9,000, hire an interim youth pastor, start an Awana program for our kids, support the Vital Church Initiative, pay our apportionments and many other improvements while balancing our budget. Our goal this year is to increase the number of giving units while we still seek to increase overall giving. If we can achieve another 10% in overall giving we can hire a full time Youth Minister and begin supplementing program budgets within the church that have remained stagnant for a decade. We will be in a position to start fulfilling our Vision. And God said "Amen to that". Your Finance Committee Chair, Jeff Bennett
Halloween Party
It’s time for our annual Halloween Costume Euchre Party and everyone is invited. This year the party will be on October 15 at 4:00 PM here at the church. The main dish will be supplied and includes chicken, ribs, hot dogs and sausage. We ask that you bring a dish to pass. Come and join us for a time of food and fellowship. Euchre playing is optional. Please contact Donna Eddy at (810) 962-9299 or Jeannine Page-Tear at (810) 241-5346.
“Goodrich UMC’s mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
Trunk-or-Treat Love seeing kids dressed up in their Halloween costumes, but never get a trick or treater? Don’t worry, come and Trunk or Treat here at the church on October 31. Trick or treating begins at 6:00 PM in Goodrich, so make sure you get here to set up before all the ghosts and goblins are released.
