► Portugal was the first country in Europe to have geographical infra-structures on the web. Portugal Digital, exhibited at Expo-98, allowing visitors to fly over Portugal and consult geo-reference databases well before Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth.
► 3.5% of the 1.5 billion people that use pre-paid mobiles, are using Portuguese technology from the PT Inovação.
► Portugal is the pioneer in electronic systems for the management of motorways. The “Via Verde” (automatic on-line payment system) processes more that 500 thousand daily transactions on tolls, petrol stations and car parks.
► If you are one of the 3 million passengers that use the London Underground, or the train in the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark or Finland, you are using Portuguese technology. The planning and management of these resources are developed by Siscog.

► In 2007 the Schengen Agreement was made available to a further 8 countries joining the EU. The suppression of immigration controls were going to be postponed due to problems connected with the Schengen Information System, however, the Portuguese company, Critical Software, found a transitional solution, SISone4all.
► Technology from the Portuguese company ISA has increased the logistic and energy efficiency of airline companies at the San Sebastian, Valladolid and Reus airports.
► If you need the health services from Saint Lucas Andreas Hospital in Amsterdam, or in the SEARCH centre in Alaska, or in Penang Adventist Hospital in Malaysia or in hundreds of health centres throughout the world, your medical records are processed by Portuguese software created by Alert.

International Cooperation
In 2006 the Portuguese Government started several international partnerships combining Portuguese universities and leading world institutions in the scientific investigations area.
Massachussets Institute of Technology – The MIT Portugal Programme was launched in 2006, focusing on Engineering Systems. In Portugal it involves 6 universiities,6 associated laboratories and 1 state laboratory, also including companies such as VW-Autoeuropa, EADS-CASA and 18 Portuguese companies.
UTAustin|Portugal Programme – Launched in 2007. It includes the creation of an International Virtual Institute, the International Collaboration for Emerging Technologies, CoLab. Involving 15 universities, 3 associated laboratories, 4 science and technology parks and 9 SME’s in Portugal.
Partnerships for the future
Carnegie-Mellon University – The CMU Portugal Programme signed in 2006, for the ITC area. Involves 11 universities, 4 associated laboratories and companies such as: Portugal Telecom, Novabase, Siemens and 15 companies based in the technological area of ITC.
An ambitious programme of Luso-Spanish cooperation in Nano Technologies was initiated and Laboratório Ibérico Internacional de Nanotecnologia in Braga was founded – a project between Portugal and Spain, with activities centred in the nano-science and nano-technology area.

Partnerships for the future
In the changing process of innovation, the Living Labs are a new institutional way of promoting more interactivity of scientific investigation, technological development and company innovation. Therefore creating ways of validating ideas and experiments of prototypes tested in every day situations by end users. These communities cover, not only SME’s but also large cooperation's such as Nokia, IBM and SAP.
The European network of Living Labs was created in November 2006 and Portugal is the second country of this network with the most Living Labs:
