It is 11 years since Culture Night burst onto the city’s cultural landscape. In that short period of time it has become established as one of the most vibrant and entertaining spectacles within the city. Last year’s event had over 100,000 participants, underlining its huge popularity. It is great that Culture Night has grown into Culture Night and Day to give more space and time for an expanded and fully accessible celebration of culture. This year promises the biggest, most open, most sustainable celebration yet; highlighting the depth of talent from right across our city. On behalf of Belfast City Council, I am delighted we are supporting this event into its second decade, and wish everyone a great Culture Night (and Day)! Lord Mayor, Councillor John Finucane

don't forget to download our culture night & day app!

the cnb app has lots of

amazing features to help you get the most out

of culture night (& day)!

So, as sure as day follows night, we are delighted to present Culture Night and Day on 20 and 21 September. We wanted to make a weekend of it this year. Show the world that Culture in Belfast happens every day and not just once a year.

Culture Day Belfast will continue where Culture Night left off the evening before, with our unique, thrilling and ever-so-slightly lemon-scented blend of arts, culture, creativity and fun, in another free, inclusive, accessible family-friendly programme. We’ll be animating every corner of the city centre, and some unexpected places along the way on an evening and a day of exploration and adventure.

Among our dizzying array of specially and carefully curated events this year we have a brilliant walking trail at Belfast Harbour, our first ever Street Feast at St Anne’s Cathedral as part of Taste the Island, magical musical mayhem with Mix the City at Belfast City Hall, and Cathedral Gardens will be transformed into the Light Gardens courtesy of Power NI.

It’s a new decade, folks. We are proud, we are ambitious, we are Culture Night Belfast!

after culture night belfast's tenth anniversary celebration last year, we had a hard think about what to do next; about who we were, who we wanted to be and what direction we want to take culture night going into its second decade…

welcome Claire Hall (Culture Night Manager)

Hello, I’m Claire and I’m new around here!

“Pride” is a big theme for us this year. Having just celebrated what was undoubtably the best Pride event Belfast has ever seen, it felt like we as a city were uniting for change. This makes me feel genuine Pride in our “wee town”! Joining Culture Night has also inspired me to looked at Belfast anew; re-examine how we interact with our public spaces and places, to take pride in the sweeping architectural canvas of our city; from City Hall, to heritage buildings such as The Masonic Hall and Riddel’s Warehouse right down to the restored and beautiful walkways of Harbour and Riverfront.

There is also Pride, of course, at our very rich and diverse Arts and Music Scene here in Belfast.

Going through this year’s submissions, it struck me just how much we have going on here. Including an internationally renowned Contemporary Arts Scene, a vibrant Indie/ Pop/ Punk and Rock Scene, Theatre, Performance art, Queer Performance and an Electronic Music Scene that is now, literally world famous.

This year, I believe our programme truly reflects Pride, in ALL its senses. It’s (deep breath) our most inclusive in terms of Gender and Sexual identity. We are also addressing accessibility head-on. We’ve listened and responded to people with a variety of access needs. There will be quiet, accessible spaces dotted throughout the city; this is the year Culture Night Belfast goes Green and joins the fight against Climate Change; there’s Trans Pride, Ginger Pride, Pride in our amazing Female DJ crews with GXRL CODE and Marion Hawkes, Female-fronted bands on our Power NI Stage, a Pop Up Queer performance with Harland and Poof, a first collaboration with AVA Festival. AND – hopefully - our last ever Big Fat Gay Wedding, as marriage equality finally appears on the horizon.

And, breathe! Finally, I’d like to pay tribute to every musician, artist, performer, organisation and venue. It’s your fearlessness, creativity and willingness to get involved that makes this city and this festival what it is. We are Belfast. We are Culture Night. And we are PROUD, not apologetic for that.

See you on the 20th and 21st September. X

culture night hubsThe Culture Night Hubs are the main point of contact for information, first aid, lost property and lost people. Culture Night will have hubs located at:

Belfast City HallCulture Hub, Rosemary StreetCotton CourtCulture Kiosk, Castle PlaceSt Anne’s Cathedral

Culture HubDrop in for a chat to our Culture Night and Day Hub at Rosemary Street on 20 or 21 Sept. We’d love to hear your thoughts about this year’s event and we’ll always have the kettle on, not to mention some cool, distracting goodies and drawing stuff for the kids!

Please use public transport, cycle or car share to Culture Night Belfast. Car exhaust is still the greatest contributor to global climate change. Help to reduce our carbon footprint by leaving your car at home! Please bring a reusable water bottle/ eco-cup/ drinking vessel. We also recommend bringing a reusable food container (eg lunchbox). All food sellers will be happy to fill your containers with Culture Night food and drink goodies! Please bring a reusable bag for your bits and bobs. They’re totes cool!

Please use the allocated toilets in and around Culture Night! Please dispose of recyclable waste in the correct designated bins, where available. Otherwise use the bin nearest to you. Ask a CNB volunteer if you have trouble finding the recycling point/ bin nearest to you. Please ONLY use what you need. For example, if every Culture Night participant used four napkins instead of one, there would be an extra 300,000 napkins wasted unnecessarily! Please dispose of cigarette butts responsibly ie IN BINS, not on the street. Have a great, green Culture Night & Day!
