Belen Wind Turkey

Driving the clean energy revolution and decarbonising Turkey’s energy system

Sitting on top of three hills in Halilb District, the Belen Wind Project is an important investment in

Turkey’s clean, secure and sustainable energy future. The wind farm contributes to the growth of the

Turkish renewables sector, helps drive down its greenhouse gas emissions, creates local jobs, and fuels

sustainable development.

The Context

The Turkish electricity grid is primarily served by emissions-intensive thermal power

plants that rely in part on imported fossil fuels like gas and coal. The country’s energy

import dependency is also growing with the increasing energy demands, making

renewable energy projects such as wind farms of increasing importance for Turkey –

not only in driving down emissions, but also for its national energy security.

The Project

The Belen Wind Power Plant is situated in Halilb District in Turkey’s mediterranean

region. The project installs 16 state of the art wind turbines, each with a capacity

of roughly 3 MW, giving the wind farm a total installed capacity of 48 MW. These

turbines make use of the prevailing coastal winds to generate clean electricity, which

is then fed into the Turkey National grid.

The Benefits

Investmenting in wind projects is crucial for Turkey to secure its sustainable and

self-sufficient energy future. The Belen wind project contributes to global climate

change mitigation, as it drives down emissions by displacing electricity generated

by fossil fuel-fired power stations with clean power - in fact, the project reduces

74,000 tonnes of CO2e each year - that’s equivalent to the emissions produced by

over 27,000 cows! On top of this, the project creates jobs and investments for local

communities, boosting the regional economy.
