Principal’s Message Greetings everyone, It is so lovely to see students settled into their new classes for 2020 and return with such enthusiasm to learn.

Our Kindergarten students have started in such a positive way also. When I popped my head into the classroom yesterday they were looking very engaged in their learning, as if they had been here for a term already.

I would like to extend a warm invitation to parents to attend the P&C meeting tomorrow night. As I mentioned last week, the P & C is a wonderful way to be informed about your child’s schooling, meet other parents and get involved in the many great things that happen in the school. I look forward to meeting as many of you there as possible.

Have a lovely week!

Parent Information Sessions On the following dates and times parents are invited to attend general information sessions with your child’s class teacher. This is an opportunity to meet the teacher and learn about classroom organisation and aspects of the year ahead. We have tried to space these sessions to suit most families however there is always a double up for some families. Parents are welcome to move between sessions if there is a clash. Ms Colley will be providing childcare in the library during these sessions. Toddlers are OK if you feel they will be happy to be in with the other kids. We will get mobile numbers for parents of pre-school children. Information sessions will be held in your child’s current classroom.

12 February ES1 (Kindergarten) (5pm–5:30pm) Stage 1 (5.30pm–6.00pm)

13 February Stage 2 classes plus 4/5 R (5pm–5.30pm) Stage 3 (5.30pm–6.00pm)

Kinder Parents’ Cuppa Morning This Friday we will be hosting a casual cuppa in the hall from 9.00am for new kinder parents following drop off. This is an opportunity for new parents to get to know each other, meet with Ms Colley the Principal and Mrs Jardine, Deputy Principal. It is also an opportunity to ask any questions which may have arisen this week. Food Allergies A number of our students have allergies that may trigger an anaphylactic reaction. We have rules that students don’t share food and students are encouraged to wash hands before and after eating. Peanuts in the form of peanut butter are the most likely form of contamination that may lead to an episode. We ask that parents don’t provide peanut butter sandwiches for students. We don’t claim to be a nut free school as there are so many foods which contain traces of nuts. The school has strategically placed Epi-pens and all staff are trained in their use. Thank you for helping keep our students safe. P & C Meeting The P&C will hold their first meeting for the year tomorrow, Wednesday 5 February, commencing at 7pm in the staff room. We hope to see as many parents attend as possible. Induction of Belair School Leaders ~ Year 6 The 2020 Induction Ceremony of our Belair Captains, Prefects, Sports Captains and Year 6 School Leaders will take place in the school hall this Thursday 6 February at 9.15 am. All Year 6 students receive a badge and it would be appreciated if a parent of each child is there to pin it on for them. The ceremony will last approximately 1 hour followed by a morning tea for our Year 6 parents. We hope you can join us.

Student Invoices Parents will be receiving electronic invoices sometime next week. Invoices will contain most of this term’s costs. Parents can choose to pay the whole amount or wait until notes for various activities are sent home with a payment due date. Please refer to the reference guide later in this newsletter for instructions on how to make payments using the new system we implemented at the end of last year. At the end of this newsletter, there are instructions on how to make payments online. Book Packs These will be issued to students over the next week as payments are received. If a family is not in a position to make book pack payments immediately, please let the office know so we can assist you with a payment plan and issue the pack to students. Voluntary Contributions Last year voluntary contributions were put towards the creation of shaded outdoor learning areas to ensure the safety of students when working in groups out of the classroom. This year the school would like to continue to focus on creating further shade for outdoor play areas such as the fixed play equipment and mud kitchen using school contribution funds. Student Attendance: Parents must ensure:

Their children of compulsory school age are enrolled in a government

or registered non-government school or, they are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) for Home Schooling.

Their children who are enrolled at school attend every day the school is open for their instruction.

They provide an explanation for absences by means such as a telephone call, written note, skoolbag app or email to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence.

They work in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to support regular attendance at school, including communicating with the school if they are aware of issues impacting on their child’s attendance or engagement with school.

• From the beginning of 2015, Family holidays and travel are no longer

considered under the Exemption from School - Procedures. Travel outside of vacation period is now counted as an absence for statistical purposes. Where the Principal considers that the travel is appropriate during the school term, the parent submits an Application for Extended Leave – Travel for the principal to approve. The Principal will request travel documentation, such as travel itinerary or e- ticket to attach to the application. (downloaded from the link; Application for Extended Leave (Travel or Holiday) or ask at the office for the application forms. The absences will be recorded as “L” – Leave

Waste Management 2020 Our lunchtime recycling program will begin this week for 2020. Again this year each class and teacher will help out for a week during each term. This will ensure that all students and teachers are learning about recycling and how we can all continue to make Belair Public School a sustainable school. If you have been saving up soft plastics at home over the holidays you can now bring them in. There are two stands located near the Kindergarten COLA and a large red bucket that you can place your bags into for checking and sorting. The Plastic Police collection begins this Friday so start sending soft plastics in from home! We will continue to have Waste Free Wednesdays and to educate students about alternate options for packing lunches that contain less packaging and less soft plastics. Our aim is to reduce our soft plastic use as we are still producing 1 very large bag a week just from recess and lunch foods across the school. Please discuss the buckets and what would go into each one at home this week and try to think about items you are packing for lunchboxes and if you could make some swaps to more sustainable choices. See information about buckets below. Our four environment goals at Belair this year are to: REDUCE the amount of packaging we bring to school REUSE containers, drink bottles and wraps for our lunches RECYCLE any packaging brought to school in the correct buckets KEEP OUR SCHOOL TIDY by picking up litter and using the buckets correctly Thank you for your continuing support and if you have any questions, concerns, ideas or would like to help with our schools sustainable programs and gardening please speak to Mrs Allars.

Blue Bucket: Paper and Cardboard

Green Bucket: Compost

Black Bucket: Landfill- Try for Zero Waste! Landfill Don‛t waste food. Eat your lunch! Volunteers Needed: To support our environment programs we are looking for adult helpers to assist in the school gardens during break times. This will involve assisting students to weed, plant, harvest and water. We also require helpers to collect cans, bottles and poppers from school to put through the return and earn machines. If you are interested please contact the school office or Mrs Allars.

The first issue for 2020 has been sent home. Orders are due by:

WEDNESDAY 12 FEBRUARY The issue will be closed-off in LOOP after this date. Book Club orders can only be placed via LOOP. Paper forms cannot be completed and placed at the office. All orders earn resources for our school.

What is LOOP? LOOP is Scholastic Book Club’s “Linked Online Ordering & Payment” platform. This system allows parents to place and pay for their order without the need to return the paper form to school. With LOOP you can pay using credit card and you can use any Scholastic vouchers. LOOP includes a gift option so you can still request that your order is left at the office to be collected. You can access LOOP either at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP or via the app (download from the App Store or Google play). If you have any problems using LOOP, Scholastic are more than happy to help out parents directly – call them on 1800 021 233. Belair Book Club Co-ordinator – Catherine Whittaker, 0414 945 817

School Banking is back at Belair Public School.

School Banking Day will be Thursday, commencing on 6th of February 2020 School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for students to learn about money and develop good savings habits. If your child has previously participated in School Banking, or has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account, they can start banking straight away by bringing their Dollarmites deposit wallet to school on School Banking day. If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on School Banking day and we will issue them with a replacement book. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking program information pack from the school office (The information pack will be available from Monday the 3rd of February) or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking For each weekly deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens, they can redeem them for exclusive School Banking reward items in recognition of their regular savings habits. There are two new items released each term so be sure to keep an eye out for them! The Term 1 rewards are Terry Denton’s Activity Book & Mini Soccer Ball

School Banking day is Thursday. Each week you need to ensure you Dollarmites Wallets have been put in the banking drawers at the office by 9am. We will issue them with a replacement.

Enhance the School Banking experience with the CommBank Youth app The CommBank Youth app provides a hands-on experience, teaching your child to earn, save and spend their money responsibly. With the CommBank Youth app, your child can:

• Check the balance of their Youthsaver account • View School Banking deposits in their transaction history • Track the number of Dollarmites tokens they collect • Set up savings goals and track progress • Create a list of chores/jobs they can do to earn pocket money.

Get Started: 1. Download the CommBank Youth app on any iOS 9+ device.

Page 13: Belair Public School Newslettermay lead to an episode. We ask that parents don’t provide peanut butter sandwiches for students. We ask that parents don’t provide peanut butter

2. Your child can securely log on to the CommBank Youth app using their NetBank client number. If your child hasn’t got a NetBank client number, you can set this up by visiting your nearest CommBank branch with your driver licence and childs birth certificate.

Calling for volunteers – we need your help!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help. The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. Currently, School Banking day is Thursday. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please fill in the tear off section below and return it to the school banking drawers located in the Admin Office.

Yes, I would like to help with School Banking!

Program Updates Dear Belair staff and community,

We just wanted to say thank you for an amazing 2019.

Together, Plastic Police® participants have saved the equivalent of 62 million plastic bags from landfill since the program began only five short years ago. That is about the weight of 3,500 people! Congratulations on this outstanding achievement.

In 2020, we are looking forward to developing and expanding the program so that more Australian families, businesses and communities can recycle their soft plastics and be part of the growing circular economy.

Plastic Police® now operates under a separate entity, Circular Hub Pty Ltd, as opposed to operating under Cross Connections Consulting Pty Ltd. This change is aligned with our plans to grow and expand Plastic Police® into a nationally recognised program.

We are excited to continue kicking goals with you in 2020, and creating positive environmental, social and economic outcomes.

We look forward to seeing what we can achieve together this year, and beyond.

From Samantha and Lexi.

Australasian Recycling Label Australians care about the environment and know that recycling is important, but with more than 200 recycling labels currently in use, getting recycling right can be difficult.

The Australasian Recycling Label removes this confusion and makes it easy to understand how to correctly dispose of packaging.

The voluntary labelling system is growing quickly. Over 200 organisations are already using the labelling system on their products.

Look out for the ‘Wrap. Store Drop Off’ label (pictured) when you dispose of your packaging today. When you see it, rest assured you can recycle it with Plastic Police®.
