What is Apiculture?

Apiculture is the science of rearing of bees artificially in boxes for procurement of honey

Page 6: Bekeeping and Apiculture

Why Mahabaleshwar as Location of Institute?• Mahabaleshwar is a hill station, it has huge

treasure of flora and fauna.• Cold climate doesn’t play any role in

location.• Any place where there is dense vegetation

or there are fields with flowers beekeeping can be done.

• In Dhule, 700 kg of honey was procured in a year irrespective of its hot climate

Page 7: Bekeeping and Apiculture

Aim and Purpose of the Institute

• To provide training to the farmers and new entrepreneurs

• To generate employment in small villages

• Apiculture, as a business should reach each and every village

What kind of bees are kept for rearing?• Sateri (Apis Serina Indica)

1) Satpuda ranges 2) Goes around 2 km in search of honey

• Apis Melifera 1) Europe 2) Goes around 3 km in search of honey

Page 10: Bekeeping and Apiculture

Why only these two breeds are kept for rearing?• They prepare their honeycombs in

closed locations like tree trunks• They are docile in nature, they are not

aggressive• They don’t migrate as far as they are

force to do so

Bee Wax Processing• Bee Wax is removed with a Knife• Raw wax with old combs are mixed in hot

water• Then it is filtered and after cooling wax floats

on water which is collected as pure wax• Bee Wax is used for various purpose such as

varnishing, ink, plastic industry, candles, cosmetics etc

Page 29: Bekeeping and Apiculture

Other Aspects• Quality Standards• Research and Development• Total Man Power required

Page 30: Bekeeping and Apiculture
Page 31: Bekeeping and Apiculture

Marketing• There is no as such competition for the

institute• As their sole purpose is to create

awareness about Apiculture in people.• Most of the honey they produce is easily

sold to private players like Madhopadak Co-operative Sansthan viz. Madhusagar and some of the other industries

Page 32: Bekeeping and Apiculture

Distribution• Two Stores in Mahabaleshwar• One store each in Amboli and Pune• Also they display their stalls in

Pandharpur Yatra and various Krishi exhibitions

• In Mumbai, they have their distribution in Mahila Gramudyog (CST) and Mantralaya also

Training• Training to new entrepreneurs and

farmers• Duration of various Training is 7 days,

15 days and 1 month• Teacher’s Training• Field Demonstration in Farmer’s Field, if

farmer is unable to come to institute
