The Feedback Summit Real Conversations. Real Action. Feedback Labs believes that regular people – whether we call them beneficiaries, constituents, or citizens – should be driving the policies and programs that affect them. The Feedback Summit is a two-day, engaging event that brings together leading thinkers, practitioners, funders, and researchers in philanthropy, aid, and governance. This year, we’ll be convening around the power of connections, and how to transform constituent feedback to build responsive, democratic and accountable governance.

Feedback Summit 2016: • 86 Organizations • 70 Featured Speakers • 30+ Interactive Sessions • 6 Collective Agendas for Action

Participating Organizations: • The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation • Mercy Corps • Omidyar Network • Fund for Shared Insight • USAID • The James Irvine Foundation • Catholic Relief Services • City of Austin Texas • Brookings Institution • World Bank • White House • Ashoka • and more!

“[The] movement…is gathering adherents, winning support from foundations and building a community of practice.”

“The movement is really taking shape. It’s taking depth. It’s taking breadth.”

Jean Louis Sarbib, Development Gateway

Summit 2016 Program: Feedback Summit 2016 moved us from talk, to action. Attendees left the summit with tools and knowledge that would make closing feedback loops - in aid and philanthropy, domestically and internationally - feasible. Here is a sample of the day’s agenda that enabled the growth of a strong community to push this agenda forward:

• Funding Feasibility: The role that foundations and investors play in closing feedback loops Melinda Tuan (Fund for Shared Insight), Fay Twersky (Hewlett Foundation), Roy Steiner (Omidyar Network)

• Feedback Ninjas: How governments are reframing what it means to be open John Maritim (Director of Economic Planning, County of Elgeyo Marakwet, Kenya), Zack Brisson (Reboot), Kerry O’Connor (Chief Innovation Officer, City of Austin)

• Jazz Standards: The role of improvisation in reporting Ed Anderton (Access Foundation), Genevieve Maitland-Hudson (Power to Change Trust)

Feedback Face-Off: Is Too Much Transparency Dangerous? Jonathan Rauch and Norm Eisen of the Brookings Institution engaged in a provocative discussion around the effects of transparency on feedback. Rauch argued that excessive transparency enables ideologues to exert too much influence on the political process. Eisen, on the other hand, stated the problem is too little transparency, not too much. Smoke-filled rooms not only lead to political quid pro quos, they also prevent average citizens from having their voices heard and lead to political alienation.

Summit 2017 Program: At Feedback Labs we walk the talk and strive to be responsive to the feedback community. This year, through conversations with past and potential attendees and through session applications, we saw an emerging trend: connections are powerful. Whether it’s collaboration at the organization level, between data sets, or among individuals, we believe that our community is on to something big – we can amplify the success of our sector and the number of closed feedback loops through strong connections. The Summit will take on questions like:

• How do you create organizational culture that unleashes the power of feedback?

• How can mapping and visualization tools help grow powerful connections?

• What ingredients best catalyze collective social action?

• What can US domestic and international feedback champions learn from each other?

“What’s terrific about the Summit is the combination of so many different kinds of people who are here. It’s quite unusual to have a gathering of people who are from government, from philanthropy, from the nonprofit sector…People bringing the best and most promising ideas from their practice to another part of the practice.”

Fay Twersky, Hewlett Foundation

“Feedback Labs has created a strong community of thought leaders and practitioners who are passionate about systematically listening and responding to beneficiaries.”
