Stuart ButlerFirst and foremost I must, once again, thank my wife Heather, and children Jake and Grace for their patience with this long project, which involved so much time up in the mountains and out of touch. In Nepal, huge thanks to Thiley Lama and Ghyalbu Tamang for a memorable ascent of Yala Peak. Thanks to Durga Tamang for advice with the Tamang Heritage Trail and the Helambu treks. For an amazing Kanchen-junga trek thanks to Lakpa Dorje Sherpa, Gelu Sherpa, Geljen Sherpa, Aug Dawa Sherpa, Pemba Sherpa, Pasang Sherpa, Dipak Rai, Rames Lama, Pemba Tamang, A and Jun Tamang, Sankar Karki and, at Himalayan Glacier, thanks to Naba Raj Amgai for organising it all. Thanks also to Anna Hindmarsh and Radko for tips on Kanchenjunga North. Finally, thanks to Ben Clift and John Gray for accompanying me on the mountain trails, but clearly Ben it would be you who would be eaten by a jaguar first…

OUR STORYA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.

Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Franklin, London, Melbourne, Oakland, Beijing and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.
