FROM THE SHERIFF
Pictured: Sheriff Lupe Valdez swears in the newest edition to her executive staff, Chief Mari-
an Brown.
Chief Deputy Marian Brown has over 26 years of service in law enforcement. She will
serve as Chief Deputy over General Services, filling the vacancy left by former Assis-
tant Chief Deputy Marlin Suell.
She began her career with the Duncanville Police Department where she most re-
cently served as the assistant chief. During her tenure, she served in the patrol divi-
sion, community relations/crime prevention, as well as criminal investigations.
The positive testimonies I hear about our deputies out in the community never
ceases to grow old. We have great employees always willing to go beyond the
call of duty to provide public safety for all Dallas County residents. That was the
case just a few days back, when one of our deputies was dispatched to attend to
an stranded dog along a busy interstate freeway. The citizen took the time to
send a nice note acknowledging how proud she was of the deputy who saved the
day. Also, Assistant Chief Deputy Marian Brown is the newest edition to my exec-
utive staff.

Academia de Polícia Militar do Barro Branco from São Paulo visited Dallas for a two-week training with Eastfield College, under the direction of Chief Mi-chael D. Horak. This is a first-time exchange program of its kind for
these lieutenant candidates who attend an Brazilian institution, which could be described as the equiva-lent of West Point in the U.S. They serve as the main state police in Brazil. The cadets also spent time with other law enforcement agencies such as Mesquite, Garland and Dallas. Captain Mark Howard and the Warrants Execution Section led the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department’s role in this exchange program.

June 2014 – Detective Vicki Duron
Detective Vicki Duron is a tireless worker who always goes the extra mile to get
the job done. She handles all the TCID/NCIC records validation process. This
task requires that records entered into the system are accurate, valid and thor-
ough in order to limit the potential for liability. Duron handles a tremendous
amount of work on a daily basis. She possesses a high level of self-motivation
and she is a great problem solver. She started her career with the Dallas Coun-
ty Sheriff’s Department in 1991.
June 2014 – Sergeant Nancy Lukasheay
Sgt. Nancy Lukasheay is an enormous asset to the West Tower Jail. Her prima-
ry responsibility is to supervise detention service officers on the Second Watch
Shift. The sergeant has built a strong credibility with the officers and she’s
shown them the importance of being a team player. Among several of her du-
ties, she also keeps track of the officers’ cultural diversity training. She started
her career with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department in 1993.
On Sunday, July 27, 2014, Deputy Womack responded to a dispatch call along I-30
and the Carroll Street exit, regarding a stranded dog stuck in the middle of traffic. A
concerned citizen called 9-1-1. She also followed up with this positive note:
“I am normally not happy seeing red and blue lights behind me, but today it was a
welcome sight.
The poor dog was stranded, exhausted, hot and thirsty and had no possible way of
crossing the interstate. Traffic was terrible and I was uncertain how to help the dog
without putting the dog, myself and others in danger.
Officer Womack showed up and between my hazard lights and his car lights, traffic
suddenly slowed and he was able to position his car and ultimately
capture the dog.
We went to SPCA and were directed to Animal Services where we were able to get assis-
tance. Officer Womack demonstrated great care and concern for a helpless creature. For this,
I am most appreciative and honored to have met this compassionate man.”—Kristi Cawley

Basic Peace Officer Class # 131 celebrated
their graduation on June 20, 2014. DeSoto
Police Chief Joseph W. Costa served as
the keynote speaker for the evening. The
class of 16 included nine new deputies. The
other law enforcement agency represented
were from Lancaster, Duncanville, and
DeSoto.

Thanks to Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, District
Attorney Craig Watkins, Sheriff Lupe Valdez, and
Parkland Hospital, Dallas County will be participating
in the Corporate Challenge this year. The annual chal-
lenge takes place during the months of August, Sep-
tember, and October in the Richardson area. It is de-
signed to promote fitness, wellness, and improved
morale; and to raise funds for the Special Olympics of
Texas. Employees, retirees, and spouses of employ-
ees and retirees are eligible. There is no required
cost to the participants

June 20, 2014: Deputy J. Hampton, 1st Watch-Traffic Section, and his wife welcome a baby girl. Skyla Monae weighed a healthy 6 lbs. 12 oz. and was 18.7 inches long. Mother, father and baby are doing great!
