SURE FOUNDATION BIBLE STUDY
LESSON 1
BEGINNING YOUR NEW LIFE WITH CHRIST
The Christian life, as God intended it to be lived, is not a mere standard of performance, a code of ethics
or life of ritual, but a vital, personal relationship with the living creator God as He has revealed Himself
to man through the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Every Christian can have the assurance that a right relationship exists between himself and God.
Without this confidence it is impossible for one to experience true happiness and complete fulfillment in
life.
The moment that you, as an act of faith, receive Jesus Christ into your life to be your Lord and Savior,
He came in.
This is what He promises in John 10:9... "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." Also in John 6:37..."The one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out".
Have you received Christ into your life in this way? __________________________________________

You have now become a true Christian. You do not become a Christian by living a good life or by being
born into a Christian family. The word "Christian" means "Christ in one" - Christ living in you. The
Bible tells us that many things happen when Christ comes to live in you.

SURE FOUNDATION BIBLE STUDY
LESSON 3
INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE The word Bible comes from the Greek word biblos, which means book. The Bible that we have today is
really a collection of books combined into one. Since Christian growth depends largely on one’s
knowledge of the Bible, it is important to have an understanding of what it is and how it came to be.
This lesson is designed to help you find your way through the Bible and to make it easier to locate the
various books and Scripture references cited throughout this study and the ones to follow.
READY TO GO!
Begin with prayer. Ask God to give you the ability to learn as you study through this lesson. This study
is designed to help you develop in your knowledge of the Bible and to grow in faith as a believer in
Jesus Christ.
WHAT THE BIBLE HOLDS FOR YOU!
The Bible is God’s written revelation to man. It describes the history of creation, the sin of man, and the
interaction and redemption of humanity by God through the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible declares
that Jesus is the central focus of the entire Word of God. Look for Him on every page as you read
through your Bible!
Just as with any book, there is a table of contents at the front of your Bible. Before you begin, locate the
table of contents and use that as your guide as you go through this study.
THE STRUCTURE OF THE BIBLE
1. The Bible is divided into various sections ranging in size from very large to fairly small. What is
the largest division of the Bible that you can find on the table of contents? (Hint: there are two
parts) ________________________________________________________________________
2
2. How many books are there in…
A. The Old Testament? _____________________________________
B. The New Testament? ____________________________________
C. The entire Bible? _______________________________________
Each book of the Bible is divided into chapters and verses. Chapters are larger divisions of a book of
the Bible, and verses are divisions within each chapter. The larger numbers found on virtually every
page of your Bible refer to the chapter, and the smaller numbers refer to the verses. When citing a
Scripture in the Bible you write the name of the book, then the chapter, followed by a colon and the
verse or verses.
3. What is the name, chapter, and verse of the Bible in the following citation? John 3:16.
Book ___________ Chapter ___________ Verse ____________.
4. Locate John 3:16. Write the page number on which it appears in your Bible once you have
located that verse. ____________.
Some books of the Bible consist of only one chapter. When citing a passage from those books you only
need to identify the book and the verse. The books that only have one chapter are: Obadiah, Philemon,
II John, III John, and Jude.
The Bible is not organized as many would expect it to be. It is not written in a purely chronological
order. However, that does not mean that it is without organization. Here is how the books of the Bible
are grouped together.
The Old Testament The New Testament
Historic – Genesis through Esther (17 books) Historic – Matthew through Acts (5 books)
Poetry – Job through Song of Solomon (5 books) Epistles – Romans through Jude (21 books)
Prophetic – Isaiah through Malachi (17 books) Prophetic – Revelation (1 book)
3
In addition to these organizational divisions there are additional subdivisions which are often mentioned.
If you are not familiar with these terms then it can be very confusing. Here are some terms and their
meanings to help you.
The Law…...……………………….... Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Pentateuch …..……………………… Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Books of Moses ……………………...Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
The first five books of the Bible are referred to by the various names above. They were written
by Moses and contain the Law of God for the nation Israel.
Major Prophets ……..………………..…………... Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, and Ezekiel.
Minor Prophets ……………..…………………………………………. Daniel through Malachi.
The Major and Minor prophets are divided by the size of the books and not because of their
importance. The Major Prophets are larger books. All of the prophetic books take their names
from the prophet who wrote the book except for Lamentations. In the original Hebrew
Scriptures, Lamentations was not a separate book, but it was part of Jeremiah. It is the only Old
Testament prophetic book that is not named after its author.
Gospels …………………………………………………….….. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Synoptic Gospels …………………………………..…...………….... Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
The Gospels record the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first three are
called Synoptic Gospels because they are written from the same perspective. They are named for
their authors.
General Epistles ………….……… James, I Peter, II Peter, I John, II John, III John, and Jude.
Epistle is just a fancy name for a letter. The General Epistles got their name from the fact that
they are not sent to a specific church to address specific issues of that church. Therefore, they
are general. These epistles are named for their authors.
Hebrews
The book of Hebrews has been traditionally identified as being authored by the Apostle Paul.
However, the book does not have the typical introduction of Paul’s letters. Therefore, scholars
debate whether or not Paul actually wrote the epistle to the Hebrews. As a result, some include
4
this letter with the General Epistles and others include it with the Pauline Epistles. We cannot be
dogmatic either way, but we at Calvary Chapel Chino Valley lean toward accepting the Pauline
authorship.
Pauline Epistles …………………………………………………..… Romans through Philemon.
The Pauline Epistles are letters to specific churches or persons that were written by the Apostle
Paul. The name given to each book is taken from the recipient of the letter rather than from the
author. In the case where more than one letter was written to a specific church or person then the
name of the book will be preceded by a number, indicating the chronological order of the
writing. For example, I Corinthians was written prior to II Corinthians.
Johannine Epistles …..……………………………….…….…….. I John, II John, and III John.
The Johannine Epistles are letters written by the Apostle John. Aside from the three epistles
John wrote, he also wrote the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation.
Prison Epistles ……..…………….……..….. Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.
The Prison Epistles are the letters that the Apostle Paul wrote from prison. He was imprisoned
for preaching the Gospel of Christ, but that did not stop him from continuing to serve in the
ministry.
Pastoral Epistles …..…………………….………..……….. I Timothy, II Timothy, and Titus.
The Pastoral Epistles are letters written by the Apostle Paul to two men, Timothy and Titus, who
were pastors. The names of these epistles signify the recipient of each letter.
Write whether each statement is True or False in the space provided.
5. The Major Prophets are more important than the Minor Prophets. _____________
6. Lamentations is the only Old Testament prophetic book that does not take its name from its
author. _____________
7. Every epistle was written by the Apostle Paul. ______________
8. All epistles are named for the recipient or recipients of the letter. _______________
9. The General Epistles are named for the person who authored those letters. ______________
10. The ministry of the Apostle Paul was brought to a halt when he was imprisoned. _____________

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST
When are we disciples? The word "disciple" comes from the same root as the word "discipline," which
has as one of its meanings, "training that develops both self-control and character."
What then is Christian discipleship? Perhaps the best definition is this: Self-training on the part of a
believer in the Lord Jesus; A training that develops self-control, love, and Christian character.
Every believer, every Christian, has the obligation to become a disciple, constantly learning about the
ways of the Lord and continually putting into practice those things which he has learned.
READY TO GO!
Begin today by praying for God's guidance. I Corinthians 2:13 tells us that godly wisdom is learned
through the words of the Holy Spirit, the Bible. Through prayer we can assure ourselves of profitable
study as the Holy Spirit gives us godly wisdom.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SHARING YOUR FAITH WITH OTHERS As Christians, our motivation for service is based upon our love for God and desire to obey Him. "We
love Him because He first loved us," (I John 4:19), and “whoever keeps His word, in him the love of
God has truly been perfected…” (I John 2:5).
Our witnessing for Jesus begins in the world in which we live, in our immediate surroundings. We must
look around and pray for God's direction and leading in sharing the gospel with our friends, loved ones,
and associates. As we shall see in the Scriptures, witnessing involves more than just speaking of the
Lord. To be an ambassador for Christ requires a lifestyle compatible with our confession of faith.
READY TO GO!
Be sure to pray for God to use this study in your growth as a believer. As we study the Word of God we
can be assured that we will be drawn closer to our Lord and prepared for things to come. (II Timothy

LESSON 7
FELLOWSHIP: BUILDING CHRISTIAN RELATIONSHIPS
Real love and real fellowship go hand in hand. One is dependent upon the other. As God loved us
in a practical way, so we must love one another. I John 3:18 tells us to love one another not only
with words, but with action and truth. Fellowship means sharing something with another person in a
deep way. This study will help you to see both the importance of fellowship to our spiritual lives as well
as our responsibilities in Christian fellowship.
READY TO GO!
Let's begin by asking God to really teach us through this study. Luke tells us in his Gospel (24:45) that
Jesus will increase our ability to comprehend the Scriptures.

LESSON 8
WATER BAPTISM & COMMUNION
The topics for this lesson deal with two sacraments that Jesus gave to the church. All believers are
called to be baptized as a testimony of their faith in Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19-20). In like manner,
Paul in I Corinthians 11:23-26 tells us that Jesus instituted communion as one way believers can
continually remember the sacrifice made for them upon Calvary and also look forward to the Lord's
return.
READY TO GO!
Let's pray that God will reveal more of himself to us through this Bible study. Jesus said in John 5:39
that if we search the Scriptures we will learn of Him, for they bear witness of Him.
WHAT DOES THE WORD SAY?
Please read the following passages before proceeding to the questions:
For baptism - Acts 8:26-39; I Corinthians 1:13-18; I Corinthians 10:1-2.
For communion - Matthew 26:26-30; John 6; I Corinthians 10:16; 11:23-34.

Both baptism and communion were instituted by Jesus himself. Although baptism is not needed for
salvation, Jesus desires all believers to be baptized as an outward confession of our faith in Him.
Communion was given to us as a place to come and remember the cost of our new life, the sacrifice of
Jesus upon the cross. As Christians, communion should be an active part of our fellowship with God
and baptism a time of testimony of our belief in Jesus Christ.

LESSON 9
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
When we received Jesus as Lord and Savior the Holy Spirit came to dwell within us (John 14:17). This
was God's promise of the new relationship between God and man through Jesus Christ (Ezekiel 36:27).
We then became "temples of God" (I Corinthians 3:16). However, for the Christian there is also an
additional experience known as the baptism of the Holy Spirit; where the Holy Spirit comes upon a
believer to empower him for service. This separate experience from salvation is what we want to study
in this lesson.
READY TO GO!
Before you begin today, stop and pray for God's guidance and wisdom in your efforts to know Him
better. The Bible is a spiritual book for spiritual people. Jesus said that the Word of God gives life!
(John 6:63). As we are diligent in our studies we will grow in the ways of the Lord.

CHURCH MINISTRY The Church is the body of Christ. To help us understand our need to work together, the Lord often
compares the church to a physical body. A healthy body is composed of two hands, two feet, etc., and
so the body of Christ, though having many members (or parts) yet is one body. Each Christian is placed
into the body at a place God desires. Some are called to preach, some to exhort, some to give, some to
administrate, etc. This study will help you not only to be aware of the different areas of involvement,
but also to encourage you to know where God is calling you.

THE HOPE OF CHRIST’S RETURN
One of the greatest promises Jesus gave to His church was the promise to one day return for them. Paul
describes the Rapture of the church in I Thessalonians 4 and concludes with verse 18, which says,
"Wherefore, comfort one another with these words." The Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of
Jesus can obviously not all be covered in one lesson. However, throughout the Scriptures, we as
Christians are given directions regarding our attitude towards God's promise of coming for His church
(Matthew 26:64). It is that which we seek to give you in this study. Truly, the hope of His coming.

WORSHIPPING THE LORD
Throughout your lessons you have grown closer to our Lord by studying the importance of His Word,
being a disciple, and sharing your faith. You have been introduced to the Holy Spirit and have learned
of God’s sacraments: water baptism and communion. How exciting to study the various parts of the
Body of Christ, the Church, and to prayerfully seek where He is calling you! As you searched the
Scripture references in the last lesson, you were shown the incredible promise of Christ’s return and in
this lesson we will learn the importance of worshiping the Lord.

Psalm 119:15-16 reads, “I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight
myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.” Begin this lesson in prayer! Thank God for
everything you have learned as you have gone through your lessons!
WHAT DOES THE WORD SAY?
Before beginning your study, please read Joshua 22:5; I Chronicles 28:9, 29:9; Psalm 29:2; 66:4.
Worship doesn’t begin with us but with God. We respond to our Creator. Webster’s dictionary defines
worship as: honor, reverence, to regard with great respect or devotion. As you reflect on the wonderful
gift of God’s mercy and grace… how can you NOT be devoted to Him?
(Please answer in your own words)
1. What motivates our worship?
Psalm 29:2________________________________________________________________________

Psalm 95:1-7______________________________________________________________________

Jeremiah 32:17____________________________________________________________________

2. As you have gone through your lessons, and attended the weekly Bible studies, have you found that
you may have been devoted to things… other than the Lord? Have you worshiped your finances,
employment, or maybe a relationship instead of the living God? How does God feel about our
worship?

Deuteronomy 11:16 ________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________
Psalm 66:4 _______________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
Proverbs 19:17 ____________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
4. We see that some of the ways we worship the Lord is by our songs of praise, by our first fruit
offerings, and by our ministry to others. Let’s look at some of the beautiful songs of praise in the
Book of Psalms. Read Psalms chapters 8, 33, 34, 40, 61, 63, 92 and 95.
Now, take a moment and write down some of the attributes of God, who He is and why He is worthy
of our worship! ____________________________________________________________________

5. Giving our first fruit offerings or tithes is sometimes a difficult principle to learn. The word tithe
means 10% and was used before the Law was given in the Old Testament. But in actuality the total
of all the required giving was closer to 23%. Is the principle of tithing mentioned in the New
Testament?
Luke 21:1________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
As Jesus sat opposite the treasury, He watched HOW people offered their tithe. Those who were
rich gave out of their abundance… there was really no sacrifice. But the poor widow gave all that
she had to live on. Her gift was an example of the depth of her generosity and her faith in the Lord
(vs. 2-4).
6. Is there a set amount that we are to give to the Lord?
II Corinthians 9:7 __________________________________________________________________

7. How and when are we to give?
I Corinthians 16:1-2 ________________________________________________________________

II Corinthians 9:6 __________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
8. The Bible teaches that we are to give of ourselves in service to others, and also we are to give to the
ministry/fellowship that meets our spiritual needs. Why is it necessary to give to your home
fellowship?
II Corinthians 9:7-14 _______________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
Paul tells Christians to first give consistently and regularly to the ministry meeting their spiritual
needs. Charitable giving to other worthy causes is above and beyond your church tithe.
9. When we tithe or give gifts and offerings to the Lord, are these gifts ours alone?
Romans 11:36 ____________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
Everything we have belongs to God, so our responsibility would be to make certain to manage those
things that He has given to us in a way that would please and glorify Him.

10. What other ways can we worship our Lord?
Matthew 25:35-40 _________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
11. As we do our works of service and follow the principles of tithing, what must we be watchful of?
Matthew 6:1-4 ____________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
Our worship needs to include every action of our daily lives… our occupation, education, hobbies, and
playtime should be yielded to God. We sing to the Lord, we give back to His Kingdom, and we serve
others to show our gratitude and love for God, whose gift to us infinitely outweighs anything we could
give in return.

LESSON 15
THE TRINITY
Of all the doctrines in the Bible the one that is probably the most difficult to understand is the doctrine
of the Trinity. There are several reasons it is considered to be a difficult doctrine to comprehend. One is
that we are finite human beings trying to understand an infinite God. Even if this doctrine is hard to
grasp, we must accept what the Scriptures say about the nature of God as He has revealed Himself to us.
Another reason that makes this doctrine problematic is because it is often attacked by cults and non-
Christians. Satan does not want people to know the True and Living God and will do all he can to
confuse every person. If he can confuse us about this doctrine then we will not have a clear
understanding of the nature of God, and we could not worship Him in truth.
The last difficulty that is often put forth in opposition to this doctrine is that the word Trinity does not
appear in the Bible. Even though that word is not in the Bible the teaching to which the doctrine refers
is evident to the diligent student of the Scriptures. The doctrine of the Trinity states there is One God
that exists in three separate persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Trinity is such an important doctrine because if we have a false concept of God and worship that
false concept then we are guilty of idolatry. Therefore, it is important that we have the proper
understanding of the nature of God as He has revealed Himself through the Scriptures.

It should be noted that the word “one” in both Deuteronomy 6:4 and Genesis 2:24 is the word echad in
the original Hebrew. That word describes one thing made up of two or more objects. It implies that the
single entity being spoken of is a compound unity. Echad should be contrasted to the Hebrew word
yachid, which refers to an absolute one in the sense of the one and only.

LESSON 16
THE WORK OF CHRIST (GOD’S NATURE)
In the last lesson we saw that God exists as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In
this lesson and the next we will examine the nature and works that are unique to Jesus Christ. In the
incarnation, when Christ became a man, Jesus took on a human nature while retaining all the attributes
of God we studied in lessons 13 and 14. In this lesson we will examine the importance of the humanity
of Jesus.
READY TO GO!
Begin this lesson in prayer! Ask God for a greater understanding of the uniqueness of Jesus. Before
proceeding to the questions below, please read the following passages of Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7; 42:8;
43:11; 44:6-7, 24; John 1:1-18; Acts 2:22-36; Philippians 2:5-11.

Matthew 26:12 ____________________________________________________________________
Matthew 26:38 ____________________________________________________________________
Luke 23:46 _______________________________________________________________________

3. Does Jesus have a separate will from God the Father? (Matthew 26:39). _______________________
4. From the information given above, is Jesus the same person as God the Father? _________________
Some people believe that Jesus is God the Father. This is a false doctrine known as Unitarianism. As
we saw in the previous lesson, the idea that God is One refers to what is called a compound unity.
Therefore, it is important to recognize that God the Father and Jesus Christ are two different persons
within the Godhead.
