Evolution of a Stitch Long and Short Oblique can be altered many ways to create differ- ent effects. As charted in The Needlepoint Book by Jo Ippolito Christensen, the stitch is a combination of 3x3 diagonal stitches crossed on one corner with a 1x1 stitch. We stitched it with Impressions for the long stitches and Kreinik for the short in our first exam- ple. The second example alternates columns of Im- pressions and columns of Kreinik. In the third, Kim- berly added a single-line Greek between columns of long and short to break it up a bit. We changed the 3x3 stitches to 2x2 for a 2- thread-wide stripe, then added reversed continental between the columns for a variation of corduroy stitch. Try Long and Short with 1x3 stitches crossed with 1x2s and 1x1s and it becomes more like a tied wavy stitch.
