PROGRAM NOTES Band music’s other “March King,” Edwin Franko Goldman (1878–1956), continued to foster an era at the beginning of the 20th Century that witnessed the meteoric growth of the band movement in America. The Goldman Band was at the forefront of this activity, spreading their musical gospel and exciting audiences through their frequent concerts in the park and radio broadcasts. The Goldman name has also enriched the repertoire with well over one hundred colorfully scored and highly inventive compositions. His gift for melody is especially apparent in the Trio sections of his marches, the most popular being “On the Mall,” “Cheerio,” and of course, “The Chimes of Liberty,” arranged here for an even wider audience of younger players. NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR Conductors who are familiar with the original scoring will first notice that the tonal centers in this arrangement have been lowered a perfect fifth in order to conform to performance requirements at this level. This results in comfortable ranges for all instruments. Furthermore, rhythms have also been simplified in spots, while still keeping the martial character of the work intact. Light tonguing should be employed throughout, as should quick releases and breaths at the end of phrases. These will aid in insuring a steady forward motion. Faithful observation of indicated dynamic levels will heighten the overall excitement, and will produce a good balance of tune and accompaniment. If feasible, the tempo could be increased to 120.
