Four Rules of Presentation

• Posture - makes you look confident and composed

– Keep your weight on the balls of your feet, not your heels

– Let your arms hang naturally by your side– Keep feet about shoulder-width apart– Don't lock your knees– Keep your head level and in line with your neck and

spine, not pushed forward– Keep your shoulders upright and stand up straight

Segue into volume

• leads to good voice.

• improves your air flow by making your trachea straighter.

Podium etiquette• helps you look relaxed and makes sure you are

not distracting.•  Stand behind the podium, don't lean on it or

slouch behind it.• If gesturing, bring your gestures up to an

appropriate level• Try not to grasp the podium with the Vulcan

Death Grip -  place your hands on the podium in a natural, relaxed way.

• Do not tap or beat on the podium! (It is not a drum!)

Eye Contact

• engages your audience. • Maintain eye contact by knowing your

speech well enough that you need only occasionally glance at your notes.

• Keep eye contact for two seconds at a time, then move to someone else.

• For example, imagine your significant other apologizes for breaking your date, but it couldn’t be helped because their tire went flat on a country road and there was no way to get it fixed in time. Etiquette - forms of decorum or rules that we have for behavior, speech or dress

Podium etiquette then refers to the rules that we want to follow when using a podium during a speech.
