The Great Barrier Reef – from the edge of space

1 Introduction

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world. This natural wonder is about the same size as Germany. Situated in the state of Queensland, on the north-eastern coast of Australia and in the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef stretches over 3,000 km and is the only living organism on Earth visible from outer space.

One of the world’s natural wonders: The Great Barrier Reef was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1981 because it is the world’s most extensive coral reef ecosystem and of enormous global importance. It is also one of the seven natural wonders of the world alongside Mount Everest in Nepal, the Harbour of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Northern (and Southern) Lights in our planet’s polar regions, Parícutin in Mexico and the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.

Types of reefsThe Great Barrier Reef is not only made up of barrier reefs – you can find all three different kinds of reefs there: barrier, fringing and atoll reefs.

FormationA fringing reef, which is the most common kind of reef, grows close to the coastline and is separated from land by a narrow, shallow lagoon. They mostly consist of soft corals that grow out from the shoreline rather than on the ocean floor.

A barrier reef also follows the coastline but is separated from land by a deep, wide lagoon and is situated much further from land.

Atoll reefs are to be found much further out to sea. They circle long-extinct volcanic islands or the tops of volcanoes that have sunk into the ocean with rising sea levels.
