INSIDE EN ROUTE
Explore the hip hop pillar of DJing with your students as they “dance through the decades” around hip hop!
Materials: 6 pieces of construction paper, markers, tape, a music player, and your own hip hop and rock n’ roll playlist (about 10 - 15 songs) featured songs from the 1970s to today.
PREPARE FOR THE LESSON1. Find a playlist online (or create a playlist of your own!) of a of hip hop and rock n’ roll music timeline from
Grandmaster Flash, to Elvis, to Lil’ Wayne, to The Black Keys. You only need about 30-seconds of each song in order to keep the activity rolling. WARNING: Play the songs you selected before class in case they contain strong language.
2. Gather six pieces of different colored construction paper and write the following on each sheet: a. “I LOVE this song!” b. “I hate this song.” c. “This song makes me happy!” d. “This song is boring.” e. “This song makes me sad.” f. “This song makes me want to dance!”
EXPLORE THE MUSIC!3. Tape the signs in various spots on the walls of your classroom.
4. Ask the class to take a look at what each of these signs say. Then, tell your students it is time to get out of their seats and join you in the middle of the classroom.
5. Turn on your playlist. When the music begins, ask students to move towards the sign that best reflects what they are thinking. Encourage them to dance while they move!
6. Whenever the music changes, ask them to adjust where they are standing depending on how they feel about each specific song.
7. Continue changing the songs until you reach present day music. Then, ask students to return to their seats.
REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhich elements of the music helped you make a decision about where to stand?Which songs were rock and which were hip hop? How could you tell? Did the genres have any similarities?Which stations did you stand at the most? Why do you think that is?

ACTIVITY 2: I SAID A HIP HOPCreate your own class dance using the steps below!
Materials: Hip hop music of your choosing
WARM-UP1. As a warm-up, gather your students into a standing circle and have them think of one word that answers
the question, “How are you feeling today?”
2. Once your students have come up with a word, ask them to turn their backs to the circle and come up with a simple everyday gesture that corresponds with their word. Ask them to try this gesture a few times facing away from the circle.
3. Have your students turn back to the inside of the circle. Ask a few volunteers to model their gesture.
4. After each gesture is shared, ask the students to do one of the gestures in rapid succession around the circle. Inform students that there should be no lag time between turns, creating a wave-like movement around the circle.
HIP HOP-IFY!5. Ask your students if they are familiar with hip hop dance. See if they’re willing to show you some of their
favorite moves!
6. See if your students can find fun ways to “hip hop-ify” any of their feeling gestures. Can they make the gesture pop? Can they fuse their gesture with a classic hip hop move to give it some flare?
7. As a class, choose 5 favorite movements created by students.
8. Practice those 5 movements together with some hip hop music!
9. As a class, choose a way to enter the stage for your dance and finish, in a Freeze - a frozen hip hop pose - or exit the dance floor in a fun, interesting way.
BONUS: Send videos of your hip hop dance to the New Vic Education department at [email protected]! We can’t wait to see them!
REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhat’s the difference between gesture, movement and dance? Can you create dance from everyday movements? How do you know when a particular dance is hip hop? What are the clues? What are things we do or feel in everyday life that could be used to inspire movement and dance?
