The family album is fast becoming a thing of the past since the advent of digital cameras, smart phones and i-pads, and in many ways I mourn the album’s passing. Each time we’ve moved home, these books are brought out, thumbed through and cherished memories and events are relived. We all probably have pictures snapped long before you or I came on the scene - photos of aunts and uncles, and your parents before they were all grown up. There’s probably a picture of you on your mother's lap or that holiday photo with your father in the background. There may be photos of family gatherings, distant cousins, nephews and nieces - long forgotten, and wedding pictures from a seemingly bygone age, and there’s your own very first baby picture. And then the cycle starts all over again moving on from one generation to another. We gather up the memories and recall the people. The church also encourages us to keep returning to our family of faith as Sunday by Sunday we retell the Bible stories. We soon discover there are two portraits of faith, one is full of images of triumph: conquering enemies, obtaining promises, even gaining victory over death. But the other portrait is filled with images of suffering: public mocking, imprisonment, beating, violence, and death. From the outside, the pictures and images are radically different, impossible to reconcile. After all, our culture says we are either successes or failures. But the Bible mixes the categories because our lot in this life is sure to encompass both pain and joy, both success and failure. The intermingled categories are meant as encouragement for struggling Christians. By the mixing of suffering and triumph the Bible gives us a word of hope: faithfulness shines both in suffering and in triumph, both in sorrow and in joy. And so we learn that faith endures. Faith trusts God's promises even when the present calls those promises into question. In the face of suffering, faith holds on and holds out because of the certainty that we are held safely in God’s loving care and so we can hope for a better tomorrow. Such are the lessons from our family photo album. We remember whose company we travel in. We are not alone – we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. We have a race to run. We are not mere tourists in this world, wandering from place to place, taking pictures, visiting landmarks, writing postcards, and then cheerily returning to the safety of home. We are runners in a race and this is no fifty-yard dash, we’re in it for the long haul – this is the marathon of life. But we don’t despair, for as we are reminded we have a roll call of biblical heroes urging us on. However our own personal pilgrimage will also contain another roll call of heroes, names that are little known except for some small corner of life that we have shared with them. For our faith journey is never a free standing structure but more of a lean-to that has depended on and grown out of the faith and strength of others. I think the older we get, the more inclined we are to recall and reminisce on the good people who have influenced our lives. "Let us run the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfector of our faith." Jesus is not simply the pioneer; he is also the perfector. Jesus not only calls us across the finish line but also fills in and fills out what is lacking in our faithfulness. He takes our incomplete faith and makes it whole – he perfects our faith. So when our knees are weak and our hands drooping, when we feel worn out in the journey of life, wondering whether we can hold on and hold out, let us recall all those who have gone before us and are cheering us on, and run with perseverance. Therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight...and let us run with perseverance the race set before us, Looking

unto Jesus the pioneer and perfector of our faith. Hebrews 12.vs.1

I wonder if you still have your family photograph album – that scrap-book to which you can return

and flip through the pages, in order to remember the people and places and events that shaped

your life. The family album is fast becoming a thing of the past since the advent of digital cameras,

smart phones and i-pads, and in many ways I mourn the album’s passing. Each time we’ve moved

home, these books are brought out, thumbed through and cherished memories and events are

relived. We all probably have pictures snapped long before you or I came on the scene - photos of

aunts and uncles, and your parents before they were all grown up. There’s probably a picture of you

on your mother's lap or that holiday photo with your father in the background. There may be photos

of family gatherings, distant cousins, nephews and nieces - long forgotten, and wedding pictures from

a seemingly bygone age, and there’s your own very first baby picture. And then the cycle starts all

over again moving on from one generation to another. We gather up the memories and recall the

people.

The church also encourages us to keep returning to our family of faith as Sunday by Sunday we retell

the Bible stories. We soon discover there are two portraits of faith, one is full of images of triumph:

conquering enemies, obtaining promises, even gaining victory over death. But the other portrait is

filled with images of suffering: public mocking, imprisonment, beating, violence, and death. From the

outside, the pictures and images are radically different, impossible to reconcile. After all, our culture

says we are either successes or failures.

But the Bible mixes the categories because our lot in this life is sure to encompass both pain and joy,

both success and failure. The intermingled categories are meant as encouragement for struggling

Christians. By the mixing of suffering and triumph the Bible gives us a word of hope: faithfulness shines

both in suffering and in triumph, both in sorrow and in joy. And so we learn that faith endures.

Faith trusts God's promises even when the present calls those promises into question. In the face of

suffering, faith holds on and holds out because of the certainty that we are held safely in God’s loving

care and so we can hope for a better tomorrow. Such are the lessons from our family photo album.

We remember whose company we travel in. We are not alone – we are surrounded by so great a

cloud of witnesses. We have a race to run. We are not mere tourists in this world, wandering from

place to place, taking pictures, visiting landmarks, writing postcards, and then cheerily returning to

the safety of home. We are runners in a race and this is no fifty-yard dash, we’re in it for the long haul

– this is the marathon of life. But we don’t despair, for as we are reminded we have a roll call of

biblical heroes urging us on.

However our own personal pilgrimage will also contain another roll call of heroes, names that are little

known except for some small corner of life that we have shared with them. For our faith journey is

never a free standing structure but more of a lean-to that has depended on and grown out of the

faith and strength of others. I think the older we get, the more inclined we are to recall and reminisce

on the good people who have influenced our lives.

"Let us run the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfector of our faith."

Jesus is not simply the pioneer; he is also the perfector. Jesus not only calls us across the finish line but

also fills in and fills out what is lacking in our faithfulness. He takes our incomplete faith and makes it

whole – he perfects our faith. So when our knees are weak and our hands drooping, when we feel

worn out in the journey of life, wondering whether we can hold on and hold out, let us recall all those

who have gone before us and are cheering us on, and run with perseverance.

Celebrating Her Majesty the Queen’s

The weekend of 11th & 12th June saw the official nationwide celebration of the

90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and Beetham Church chose to

mark the occasion in style

* Special thanks go to Dianne Lomax for creating a beautiful red, white and

blue flower arrangement next to the pulpit in the church at the start of the

weekend

* The usual St George pennant flown from the

church tower was exchanged for the full size

Union Jack flag

* On the Sunday the tower bell ringers

celebrated the Queen’s birthday by

ringing the musical change known as

‘Queens’ 90 times. This was then

successfully followed by ringing 95

changes of ‘Kings’ to mark the 95th

birthday of Prince Philip (as there is no

‘Princes’ sequence!)

June Work Party

Thank you to the intrepid volunteers who joined the

Church Work Party on Wednesday 15th June. Although

numbers were lower than usual, a long list of actions was

tackled with gusto by those that came along!

The cenotaph was in need of a good cleanout following

the latest heavy rains. Several

bucket-loads of mud and

weeds later the area around

the memorial looked neat

and tidy, although sadly the

flooding came back again the

next day, so this will become

a regular work day item

A special thank you to Ann Parrott

for spending most of the morning on

her hands and knees trimming the

pergola borders and dead-heading

and tying back the roses. The roses

and clematis have produced a

wonderful display and scent this year

and hopefully will continue to flower

for several more weeks to provide a

lovely entrance for the July weddings

In the new burial ground

the previously cut laurel

bushes and other old

branches were cleared

with a large bonfire. In

the old churchyard, a

damaged headstone was

successfully laid flat. All

in all a good days work!

Church Flower Festival

This year’s theme of ‘Beatrix Potter

and the National Trust’ provided the

flower arrangers with a delightful

challenge, and resulted in the church

filled with wonderfully imaginative

displays for the May Bank Holiday

weekend

The carefully crafted pink and white arrangements included

Jemima Puddleduck on her nest, Mrs Tiggywinkle complete

with her washing line, Peter Rabbit eating a lot of carrots

and enjoying himself in Mr MacGregor’s garden, and a very

soporific Flopsy Bunny

The flower displays were accompanied by a Beatrix Potter

exhibition in the Lady Chapel, telling the story of Beatrix’s

life and her association with the Lake District, and her

significant contribution to the early days of the National

Trust, which was co-founded by her friend Canon Rawnsley

Thank you to Dianne Lomax and the Friends for organising

the Festival; to all the flower arrangers and contributors to

the exhibition; to Anne Lofthouse for hand-painting 15

lovely pictures for a very popular Beatrix Potter Quiz; to the

cake-bakers and tea-makers over the weekend; and to the

stewards who greeted the many visitors over the three days.

The Festival donations raised over £400 for the Church

90th Birthday

* On the Saturday afternoon, the planned Parsonage Strawberry

Garden Party went ahead despite the pouring rain, although with

grateful thanks to Rev’d Linda and Geoffrey it became a House

Party instead. Entertainment was provided by the Handbell

Ringers with the audience enthusiastically singing along, and a

fiendishly difficult Royal Quiz was provided by the Lomaxes

Thanks go to the caterers and every-

We can’t quite believe that another school year is coming to an end. This week we had our ‘Moving Up’ day. This is when our Year 6 children visit their new secondary school, Reception and Year 1 – 5 all move up to their new year group and we welcome our Reception children and their families to school for their first official visit

We had a super sports day at Dallam Tower – the afternoon was eventually sunny and warm and we enjoyed team events and traditional races, with lots of spectators

Our Yr 5 & 6 children had a wonderful visit to London with children from Old Hutton CE Primary School. We spent 4 days in our capital city, staying in the hostel in Holland Park, Kensington. On our first day we did a walking tour of the main sights and then had a flight on the London Eye. We spent another day visiting St Paul’s Cathedral and going to the theatre. For our third day we travelled to Greenwich and went on the Cutty Sark and visited the Observatory and Planetarium and we spent our final morning in the Natural History Museum and National Science Museum before travelling home. All the children had a wonderful time and it was a great opportunity for them to have new experiences and make new friends

As we head towards the end of term we are looking forward to our summer performance ‘Beetham School – Come Fly With Us!’ in the Heron Theatre. This is a musical play with dance and performances by our instrumentalists and takes place on Wednesday 13th & Thursday 14th July at 6.30pm with a dress rehearsal on Wednesday 13th at 2.15pm. If you would like to attend a performance please contact the school to arrange a ticket

During our last week we celebrate our Leavers Service in Church on Wednesday 20th July at 2pm. Members of our village and church community are very welcome to join us to wish our Yr 6 children well for their move to secondary school. On the last day the whole school enjoys a day out at the Maize Maze to end our term

So at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year I would like to thank everyone for continuing to support our school and wish you all a lovely summer holiday

Best wishes Wendy Nicholas

The public consultation will help the Council record important local heritage assets, to be a valuable resource when making planning decisions in the future. It will run until Wednesday 6 July.

If you know the Silverdale, Warton and the Yealands area well please help to record distinctive features of the historic landscape of the AONB like limekilns, bee boles, water troughs & milk churn stands, as well as buildings. BEETHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER, ISSUE No 27 APRIL – JUNE 2016 Let’s start with some good news. As you know, land matters occupy much of the parish council’s time. After many months of effort, from both members and tenants, new rent agreements have finally been completed for all the garage etc sites off Leighton Beck Road, Slackhead, and all rents paid up to date. The parish council would like to thank all who have been involved in this saga for bringing it to a satisfactory conclusion. Plans to improve the Dixies site at Sandside have been delayed pending the establishment of ownership. Information provided from a wide variety of sources has proved inconclusive, but the parish council has resolved to persist in its efforts, with the objective of eventually being able to smarten up this high-profile site for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.

The inspector has finally published his decision on the Hale Marble Quarry case, following the public inquiry held at Storth Village Hall some months ago. He has upheld the land owner’s objection to Cumbria County Council’s granting of public right of way status for a number of paths in this area, thereby bringing to an end many years of public use. Fortunately we live in a beautiful area and there is still much to enjoy. You will recall that the earlier inquiry, on a similar issue at Burntbarrow Woods in Storth, resulted in right of way status being confirmed for the disputed paths in that case.

Not too long ago, the parish council was instrumental in organising the installation of information map boards at Friar Cote Bridge, Sandside, and at Hale Green. These were generally well received. At its June 2016 meeting, it was agreed that the parish council would support the idea of smaller panels, providing local information, to be sited in Storth, Carr Bank and Beetham. You will be kept informed as this project progresses. It was also agreed that Storth’s newly reorganised post office and community shop, now offering a wider range of services, should be publicised more effectively for the benefit of both residents and visitors. This is to be done with available grant monies.

With an increasing elderly population it is important to maintain the services they need, wherever this can be done and even at a time of financial restraint. Libraries are currently under threat, so it is a relief to learn from Cumbria County Council that, as far as possible, savings will be made by way of reducing opening hours rather than total closures.

The recent warning of the possible closure of Westmorland General Hospital’s Kentmere (mental health) Ward is not good news. Fortunately, as a result of overwhelming feedback to Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust of widespread serious concerns, the decision has been delayed pending further assessment of how Care Quality Commission requirements might otherwise be met.

Defibrillators are often seen in public places these days. They are also held by many First Responder teams. Thankfully, most of us will never need one. However, the East Ward of Beetham parish has been identified as a local area where they are not readily available, despite having several residents who have undergone training in their use. The parish council would like to do something about this and is prepared to fund the purchase of equipment by a properly-formed group. If you are interested in forming such a group, please contact the Parish Clerk. Similarly, Beetham village has no community transport group and the Storth group is too stretched to increase its coverage. Any volunteers?
