Annual Florida Postsecondary Program Planning InstituteThe
Florida Center for Students with Unique Abilities will hold the
Annual Florida Postsecondary Program Planning Institute in Orlando
on November 6-8, 2019. The purpose of the institute is to increase
understanding of resources available and facilitate planning and
implementation of Florida Postsecondary Comprehensive Transition
Programs for students with intellectual disabilities in all types
of postsecondary education institutions, such as universities,
state and community colleges, and career technical centers. For

The Healthy Schools Toolkit 101Researchers at Health Equity
Works will introduce the Healthy Schools Toolkit, a
research-informed tool that is grounded in the Whole School, Whole
Community, Whole Child model. Join Dr. Jason Purnell of Health

2019 Educational Strategies and Student Engagement Institute
(ESSEI)The 2019 ESSEI will be in Orlando on November 18-20, 2019.
This year’s ESSEI conference, Destination Graduation: Preparing
Florida’s Students for College, Career and Life Success, is
presented by the Florida Department of Education’s (FDOE’s) Office
of Dropout Prevention in partnership with the Florida Education
Foundation. Keynote speakers will be Joy Prescott, 2019 Florida
Teacher of the Year; Dr. Lateshia Woodley, assistant superintendent
of Kansas City Public Schools; and Rodney Robinson, 2019 National
Teacher of the Year, as well as Dr. Dakeyan Cha Dre Graham, 2020
Florida Teacher of the Year, hosting the Student Forum. Please join

Florida Trauma-Informed Care Day ProclamationGovernor Ron
DeSantis has issued the attached proclamation to recognize November
1, 2019, as Florida Trauma-Informed Care Day. Trauma-Informed Care
involves the implementation of principles and practices that
promote a culture of safety, empowerment and healing to promote the
health and well-being of Florida’s children and families. To view

Office of Special Education Program (OSEP) GrantsTwo OSEP grants
received funding: Project SPECIAL and Project INCLUDE. Project
SPECIAL is an interdisciplinary program leading to either a
master’s in special education or an educational specialist degree
in school psychology with an emphasis on intensive interventions
for students with persistent and severe learning and behavior
challenges. Project INCLUDE is for a doctoral program that creates
a consortium with Arizona State University and Syracuse University

doctoral scholars engaging in culturally sustaining, evidence-based
practices aimed at improving the outcomes of high needs students
with disabilities (e.g., culturally and linguistically diverse
populations; English learners, racial minorities, high poverty, and
immigrant and refugee backgrounds) in diverse and inclusive urban

FLORIDA TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE DAY
WHEREAS, Florida's communities are working together to provide
education on Trauma-Informed Care and Adverse Childhood Experiences
(ACEs) to promote the health and well-being of our residents;
and
WHEREAS, trauma is a widespread, harmful and costly public
health problem that occurs as a result of violence, abuse, neglect,
loss, disaster, war and other emotionally harmful experiences;
and
WHEREAS, trauma is experienced by an individual as physically or
emotionally harmful, leaving lasting effects on the mental,
physical, social, emotional or spiritual well-being of a person
regardless of age, race, gender or socioeconomic status; and
WHERAS, Trauma-Informed Care is the adoption of principles and
practices that promote a culture of safety, empowerment and
healing, and involves understanding, recognizing and responding to
the effects of all forms of trauma; and
WHEREAS, as chair of the Florida Children and Youth Cabinet and
through her "Hope for Healing Florida" program, First Lady Casey
Desantis is working alongside state agencies to improve the health,
safety, economic stability and quality of life of Florida's
children and families; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ron Desantis, Governor of the State of
Florida, do hereby extend my support and appreciation to all who
serve victims of trauma and recognize November 1, 2019, as Florida
Trauma-Informed Care Day.
