August/September 2015
We are requesting that when parents
call school during the day to either
talk with their child or leave a message, it be limited to emergency
concerns only. We appreciate your
help as this will assist us in reducing
the number of class interruptions.
PHONE CALLS
Also, we would appreciate it if you
would have your child plan ahead
and clear everything with you the
night before if they want to stay for
after-school activities or if they have
other plans than coming straight
home.
Middle School students get less sleep if they have a
computer or a TV in their bedrooms. They go to bed
a half hour later than students who do not. But they
wake at the same time.
To avoid these poor outcomes for your child: Set a strict limit on total screen time. No more
than two hours per day. Keep TVs and computers in family areas, not
bedrooms. Require that schoolwork, chores and exercise
come before any screen time takes place.

Beer Middle School
prides itself on not only
the academic achieve-
ment of students but
also their behavioral
and social development
as well. Our school’s
theme — RESPECT,
ATTITUDE & PRIDE
(RAP) — is the focus
of our student behavior
expectations.
Throughout the school
year our staff will be
teaching the RAP be-
havior expectations to
students. Student con-
duct grades and Earned
Privilege levels will be
determined, in part, by
how well a student
demonstrates Respect,
Attitude & Pride in
their classes and throughout the building.
The RAP behavior expectations are posted
throughout the school
and communicate to
students how we expect
them to behave in
school. Rewards & incentives for practic-
ing RAP are offered to students throughout the
year.

In order to have a safe, inviting place for students to learn, schools need to have rules regarding student
conduct and behavior. Most students understand that rules are necessary, and they follow them. For the
students who don’t follow the rules, there are consequences.
Consequences can range anywhere from getting detention to being expelled. In most cases, the consequence will depend on the seriousness of the offense and the past history of the student involved.
While rules vary from school to school, no school will allow alcohol, drugs, weapons, violence, smoking,
or bullying.
All students need to take an active role in making their school a safe place where students want to come to
learn. If you every feel threatened, or if you know of a situation that may put you or someone else at risk,
tell a teacher, principal, or counselor immediately.
Principals and teachers make rules so their school will run smoothly, and so that everyone will be safe.
It’s the students, however, who make their school a great place to be!
People to go to for help
If you look around your school, you’ll find teachers, principals, counselors, librarians, tutors, coaches, and
secretaries. All of these people are there to help you have the best middle school experience possible.
At some point, you’re probably going to have a question or problem that you need help with. You can
usually get your questions answered and your problems taken care of just by going to the right office, or
by talking to the right person.
If you ever have a problem and don’t know who to talk to, see your counselor. Your counselor will be
able to help you with whatever question or problem you have.
