Creating value for al l in the supply chain.

Over 50% of UK beef production comes from the dairy herd. By placing focus on the quality of dairy bred beef animals reared, it is possible to drive farm efficiencies while also producing what consumers require.

Genus ABS, the UK’s leading supplier of beef genetics, and ABP Food Group, one of the largest beef processors in Europe, have collaborated in a new partnership called BeefConnect. BeefConnect aims to deliver better efficiencies from the beef supply chain whilst securing long term opportunities for British beef.

Why has this been introduced? Crossing beef sires onto lower end dairy cows is a well adopted practice, as it avoids over production of low value, male dairy-bred calves and increases calf crop value by producing beef cross calves of higher value.

What is the programme and how will it work? The programme will facilitate the supply of Genus ABS bred calves* to ABP which will enhance efficiencies by purchasing calves of known genetic merit. Further details of the specification can be found overleaf.

What are the benefits to me, the farmer? You will benefit from competitive prices and a simpler way of moving calves off farm, while having access to calf rearing advice and top quality beef genetics.

* Subject to ABP calf specification.

“We have been using BeefConnect on farm collection for our Aberdeen Angus Nightingale Ploughman calves for some time now. We have been really pleased with the service. The communication is excellent, usually via text, where we are asked three days prior to collection what we have and the prices we will get. We get a message the day before stating an accurate collection time. Calves are weighed on the trailer before they leave the farm and we get paid via BACS very promptly.“

“BeefConnect are delivering an excellent service, with a well organised collection of calves, achievable target weights with a premium price. We are pleased to play our part in the supply chain. We have used Ploughman for over five years now and have been pleased with the results he has delivered.”
