Registered at the National Bee Unit. Frequently asked questions Who would benefit from the day? All ages from 8 upwards with a general interest in the world of bees. Is previous experience required? No. The day is tailored to suit the audience of the day. What clothing do I need to wear? Protective clothing is provided during the day. Individuals are asked to bring wellington boots and warm clothing, as part of the day will be outside. Will I get stung? We take every reasonable step to avoid people being stung. However, bee keeping does carry the risk of this possibility. A small proportion of people are allergic to bee stings. Should you be concerned that you are one of those individuals, or have asthma or a heart condition, please consult your doctor before booking. Do I need to bring lunch? Light refreshments and lunch are provided. How do I access the day? Pre-booking is required either in person at The Garden Restaurant or by calling 01302 770564. What is the cost? The cost is £60.00 per person, payable in advance. In the event of the day being cancelled due to adverse weather, a full refund will be given. The day includes the following bee keeping skills...

Examination of a national beehive and its structure.

Health and safety, including personal protective equipment.

Hands on experience of using a bee suit, smoker and hive tool.

Under supervision, hands on experience of opening a beehive and removing frames for inspection.

Identifying the castes of the honey and other bees.

Recognising brood and stores (honey).

Your teacher, ‘Grandad Mal’, has been keeping bees for the last six years and is keen to inspire others with his passion for keeping these busy little heroes buzzing.

Instructional DVD on the life cycle of the honey bee

An introduction to the national beehive and its component parts. Looking at how it is used and managed.

A discussion on whether bee keeping is for you. Covering aspects such as legislation, costs and location.

An explanation of the various groups which exist to support beekeepers.

Complementary Lunch

Bee suits on! We make our way to the apiary for hands on experience.

An introduction to the apiary

Lighting up a smoker

Under the supervision of the beekeeper, groups of two will enter the apiary.

Perform basic tasks on live hives

Return to the classroom for a debrief and any questions.

At the end of the day you will be awarded a certificate of participation.

Starting at 10.00am with tea and coffee in the conservatory at Walker’s Nurseries, the day is structured as follows...

Please bring wellies and warm clothing, as part of the day will be spent outside. Sorry, over 8s only. No upper age limit. Pre-booking is required, in person at The Garden Restaurant at Walker’s or by phone on 01302 770564.
