1. The honey bee has been around for millions of years.2. Honey bees are environmentally friendly and play an

important role in pollination. 3. It is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.

4. Honey contains all the substances necessary to sustain life - enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and water. It’s the only food that contains “pinocembrin”, an antioxidant for improved brain functioning.

5. Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors, compared with only 62 in fruit flies and 79 in mosquitoes.

6. Honey bees’ sense of smell is so precise that it could differentiate hundreds of different floral varieties and tell whether a flower carried pollen or nectar from metres away.

7. The honey bee’s wings stroke incredibly fast, about 200 beats per second

8. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour.

The honey bee is also known Apis mellifera because it produces large amounts of honey. It is believed that the honey bee originated in Africa and spread to northern Europe, India, and China.

Honey bees are variable in colour with some shade of black or brown intermixed with yellow. The bee ranges from 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch long.

QUEEN BEE (the reproductive female)is elongate and has a straight stinger with no barbs.

DRONES (reprodutive males)is short-bodied and has large eyes.

WORKERS (non-reproductive females)has hind legs specialized for collecting pollen - each leg is flattened and covered with long fringed hairs that form a pollen basket. A worker bee’s stinger has barbs.

Honeybees make their own special wax (beeswax) to create perfect little hexagons inside their home. Inside them, the bees store everything from eggs to pollen, and honey.

To seal their hive and to protect against diseases, the bees make a substance called propolis. Propolis is a combination of beeswax, honey, and tree resins, and is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. It disinfects and protects their hive. It is also very sticky, and is also used to seal up any cracks or holes inside the hive.

Foraging honeybees collect pollen from flowers and trees. It is a source of protein, vitamins, and trace minerals essential for the bee colony

Honeybees leave the hive in search of pollen because

the Queen has started to lay eggs. Pollen is needed

by the colony to feed larvae and young bees.

Pollen is also eaten by young bees because the protein helps them grow.

Honeybees are usually seen flying back to the hive

with “baskets” of brightly coloured pollen on their hind legs. The colours

of the pollen range from golds, reds, orange to

blues and greys.

At the hive, pollen “basket” are unloaded and moistenend with honey and bee saliva to turn into “bee

bread”. These are then packed into the hive cells can be stored for months

without going mouldy.

Foraging honeybees gather pollen grains with

their middle legs and dusts them into “baskets” on their hind legs to bring back into the hive. Average collection

are between 15-16mg or 8mg per basket.

Pollen is a source of protein, vitamins and trace minerals. They are food for

the larvae. Worker bees mix pollen with wax to

make the brood capping porous.

Honeybees are very selective about where their nectar and pollen

come from. These sources usually include trees with fragrant flowers such as the Pagoda tree, apple

and plum trees.

BEE INSPIRED ABOUT THE HONEYBEE

COLONYHoney bees can be regarded as a single super-organism

because groups of individuals appear to serve the functions of organs. The colonies also undergo changes as a group and that’s why to manage honeybees, one has to be familiar with

the development and activities of the colony, and the seasonal changes that take place in it.

The brood nest is where the queen lays eggs and young bees are reared. This is the heart of the colony which may be only a small circle of cells on one side of a comb, or it may include up to 20 or more full combs (frames).

The entire brood nest, including all the areas of comb is generally ellipsoidal or spherical so that it is readily surrounded by the cluster of adult bees in cool weather. The bees form such a cluster when the temperature drops to about 14°C. The area containing developing bees is kept at a temperature of about 35°C.

The worker bees warm the brood nest to this temperature by moving their bodies and fanning their wings. To do this, honeybees need honey as food. In hot weather the bees cool the nest to 35°C.

The bees store pollen in the cells surrounding the brood where they fed to developing larvae and to be eaten by newly emerged adult bees. The pollen stored in the brood cells also protein reserve for the colony until fresh pollen is available from spring blooming plants.

Honeybees cannot survive on their own for long, but require the social setting of the colony. It is the colony that matters; where tasks are accomplished through division of labour. Every member works, not for itself, but for the benefit of the colony.

DANCE OF THE BEESUpon returning to the colony after collecting nectar and pollen, the honeybees communicate information by using a “dance” or “bee language” about the distance and direction of the food source from the hive. They may also share information about the quality, or sugar concentration, of the nectar. Apart from communicating about food sources, honeybee scouts also visit available cavities, such as a hollow tree, cave, or hole in a building, and evaluate their suitability as a home for the swarm. After many visits, the bees agree which one is best and move to it as a group.

Page 4: BEE - CNI CORPORATION• Top-bar hive: Popular amongst amateur beekeepers, top bar hives were originally used as traditional beekeeping a method in both Greece and Vietnam. These have

• Early beekeeping: Early forms of honey collecting entailed the destruction of the entire colony when the honey was harvested. The wild hive was crudely broken into, using smoke to suppress the bees. The honeycombs were torn out and smashed up — along with the Queen, eggs, larvae and honey they contained. The liquid honey from the destroyed brood nest was strained through a sieve or basket through this destructive and unhygienic method.

• Traditional or fixed comb hive: This is a hive in which the combs cannot be removed or manipulated for management or harvesting without permanently damaging the comb. Fixed comb hives are no longer in common use in industrialised countries, although they still exist and are the livelihoods of many communities in poor countries.

• Movable frame hives: Known also as the Langstroth hive, this was the first successful top-opened hive with movable frames, and other designs of hive have been based on it.

• Top-bar hive: Popular amongst amateur beekeepers, top bar hives were originally used as traditional beekeeping a method in both Greece and Vietnam. These have no frames and the honey-filled comb is not returned to the hive after extraction, as it is in the Langstroth hive. Because of this, the production of honey is likely to be somewhat less than that of a Langstroth hive. Top bar hives are mostly kept by people who are more interested in having bees in their garden than in honey production.

• Natural beekeeping: Proponents of this beekeeping method avoid modern beekeeping and agricultural practices such as crop spraying, hive movement, frequent hive inspections, artificial insemination of queens, routine medication, and sugar water feeding. They believe that such methods weaken bee hives. Natural beekeepers use variations of the top-bar hive, which is a simple design that retains the concept of movable comb without the use of frames or foundation.

Forms of BeekeepingTHREATS TOBEEKEEPING

• Mites: The Varroa and Tracheal mites are the greatest threat to beekeeping. These mites are greatly reducing the overall honeybee population in the USA. The mites are of no concern to humans, except for the effect they can have on honey production.

• Disease: Although harmless to humans, diseases such as “Foul Brood” and “Nosema” are unique to honeybees. Frequent good management of the colony and proper medication can easily overcome these diseases.

• Urbanization: With more and more urban development and the growth of cities, there is less and less foraging available to bees.

Page 5: BEE - CNI CORPORATION• Top-bar hive: Popular amongst amateur beekeepers, top bar hives were originally used as traditional beekeeping a method in both Greece and Vietnam. These have

HOW DO BEES MAKE HONEY?Nectar — a sugary liquid — is extracted from flowers using a bee’s long, tube-shaped tongue and stored in its extra stomach, or “crop.” While sloshing around in the crop, the nectar mixes with enzymes that transform its chemical composition and pH, making it more suitable for long-term storage.

When a honeybee returns to the hive, it passes the nectar to another bee by regurgitating the liquid into the other bee’s mouth. This regurgitation process is repeated until the partially digested nectar is finally deposited into a honeycomb.

Once in the comb, nectar is still a viscous liquid. To get all that extra water out of their honey, they fan the honeycomb with their wings in an effort to speed up the evaporation

process. When most of the water has evaporated from the honeycomb, the bee seals the comb with a secretion of liquid from its abdomen. This eventually hardens into beeswax and if stored away from air and water, honey can be kept indefinitely, providing bees with the perfect food source for cold winter months.

THE DIFFERENT QUALITY OF HONEYHoney’s colour, taste, aroma and texture vary greatly depending on the type of flower a bee frequents. Clover honey, for example, differs greatly from the honey harvested from bees that frequent a lavender field. The Chinese and Japanese Pagoda Tree flowers too, have a distinct colour and taste – along with the various medicinal properties that are present inside the flower’s nectar and pollen.

What Is HONEY?

When we think of honey, we usually think of that sweet,

yummy, delicious thick golden liquid we drink or spread over

our bread. You’ve seen it, tasted it but - what is honey, really?

Honey is a thick, golden liquid produced by industrious bees,

made using the nectar of flowering plants and is saved

inside the beehive for food during times of scarcity.

THE PAGODA TREEThe Pagoda tree is native to eastern Asia, especially China and Japan. In China, it is known as the Chinese Scholar Tree, and Japanese Pagoda Tree in Japan. This medium-sized tree grows to 65 feet in height, usually with a broad round crown. It grows rapidly and tolerates urban conditions, heat, and drought. Its leaves are approximately 6- to 10-inches long. These bright-green, pinnate leaves are fern-like and consist of 9 to 15, elliptic leaflets and are extremely pest-free.

This tree begins to bloom when 10 to 15 years old. In late summer and early fall, 10- to15-inch upright panicles of mildly fragrant, creamy-white, pea-like flowers are produced at the ends of branches and live about a month. The tree’s flowers are replaced by ornamental yellow seed pods, 6 to 8 inches long, which persist well into the winter and resemble strings of beads.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIESThis herb is produced all over China, and is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. The flowers are edible and often used as a cool Chinese herb to stop bleeding. The flowers and flower buds are:

• Anti-bacterial, anti-cholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, haemostatic and hypotensive.

• A rich source of rutin - a valuable hypotensive agent.

• Used in the treatment of a variety of ailments including internal haemorrhages, poor peripheral circulation, internal worms etc.

• Used in the treatment of haemorrhoids, haematuria, uterine bleeding, constipation, stuffy sensation in the chest, dizziness, red eyes, headache and hypertension.

PAGODA TREE HONEY:

WHY IT’S SUPERIOR

The source of Well3 Honey products is of course, from honeybees. But where do the honeybees source the nectar from? This article is about the Pagoda Tree Flower (Sophora japonica), also known in Mandarin

as Huai Hua Mi; and the role it plays in making one of the world’s richest source of honey.

• Used as laxative and also used in the treatment of epilepsy and convulsions, piles, sore eyes and skin ailments.

• Good at stopping bleeding by astringency; fruit is expert in stopping bleeding and lowering blood pressure; root bark and leaf are skilled in curing sore.

The Pagoda Tree is notably resistant to honey fungus, the common name of several species of fungi within the genus Armillaria. Honey fungus spreads underground, attacking and killing the roots of perennial plants and then decaying the dead wood.

The flowers of the Pagoda Tree are very important nectar sources for honey bees, because these trees are native to China and Japan. Well3 honey products are unique as the source of the honey comes exclusively from the Pagoda Flower which is highly rated. The Pagoda Flower Honey is fragrant and does not crystallise easily. It consists of elements which are able to relieve coughs and antibiosis, and possesses anti-bacterial properties.

The Pagoda Flower Honey is manufactured under exacting quality and hygiene standards. Samples of all incoming honey are tested and graded for clarity, type, flavour, moisture, and colour. As a result, our honey is of the finest grade available.

HONEY: WORLD PRODUCTION,

TOP EXPORTERS, TOP IMPORTERS

This report covers the production of honey by country with a bar chart. We have also ranked the world’s top

exporters and the world’s top importers.

Honey is a naturally produced sweet gathered and used by man for the last 8000 years. There are many different grades of honey available. Natural grade is different from industrial. Every batch of honey is special, even when from a similar region bees gather nectar from a wide variety of plants, producing distinct tastes.

WORLD TOP EXPORTERS OF HONEYFollowing the production trends, China was the number one honey exporter in the world, selling USD$ 284 million dollars’ worth in 2012. China dominated 12% of the global honey sales. Germany was the second largest exporter followed by Mexico. Exported Mexican honey accounted for 7% of the total market.

WORLD TOP IMPORTERS OF HONEYGermany was the number one honey importer in 2012. They imported almost a quarter of the available honey, 24%. United States was the world’s second largest honey importer, importing 16% of the market share at an estimated value of 383 million dollars. The United Kingdom was third, France was fourth, and Japan was the fifth. Below is a list of the top ten countries importing honey in the world with estimated values.

ANALYSISForecasts on the global honey production for 2012 show that various major production countries are having climate-related problems with their production. Prices are expected to remain strong, as demand also remains strong. The financial crisis has only had a limited effect on demand for honey, although it is difficult to predict if it will affect future demand.

CONSUMER & INDUSTRY ANALYSIS• The honey market is principally segmented into honey for household consumption and honey for

industrial use. An estimated 85% of all honey goes to direct consumption. • It is used mainly as spread on bread, and some is used as a natural sweetener for drinks such as tea or milk.

It can also be used in food preparations such as salads, vegetable and meat glazes and casserole dishes. • Food industry: mainly used in the bakery, confectionery and cereal industries. It is particularly useful in

baked goods. Honey was traditionally used in food preparations, but is now often replaced by sugar and syrups. The honey which is used by the food industry is often of a lower quality than the honey used by households.

CONSUMER & HEALTH TRENDSConsumers everywhere are increasingly interested in a healthy life style and, consequently, in the consumption of health food, and/or functional food. Honey fits in well with the natural health trend. It is a completely natural product which has several health-promoting properties and appreciated for its natural origin, therapeutic as well as medicinal properties.

Beeswax candle last longer

When beeswax is burnt, it produces negative ions that get rid of pollen, dust, mould, toxins. This makes them ideal for allergy suffers

CONTAINS BENEFITS REMARKSHONEY is a liquid bee food source made from flower nectar via regurgitation. It is stored in the hive’s wax honeycombs and is commonly consumed by humans and is sweet. Honey has antibiotic properties and medicinal purposes. Honey is a complex mix of: (80%) natural sugar, (18%) water, (2%) minerals, vitamins, pollen and protein.

BEESWAX is a natural substance created by bees in their hives. Bees build honeycombs from wax to store honey they create. Beekeepers remove wax honeycombs from bee hives and extract honey. After the honey is extracted, the beeswax is cleaned and processed for further use in various mature niche markets, such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, candles, food coatings and polishes.

BEE POLLEN is pollen from flowers that sticks to bees’ bodies, combined with plant nectar and bee saliva. The insects use it as a food source for male drones. It is promoted as a nutritional supplement that is said to improve athletic stamina. It is also used to treat a range of conditions, including constipation, ageing and wound healing.

PROPOLISalso known as bee glue, is a resinous substance the bees collect from tree buds and use to seal cracks in the hive. Propolis is claimed to be anti-inflammatory with anti-tumour and anti-oxidant characteristics.

ROYAL JELLY is secreted from the salivary glands of worker bees and fed to bee larvae. Royal jelly has many of the same uses as bee pollen and propolis- but is additionally considered capable of effecting lipid profiles and having neurological and estrogenical effects.

Insights About BEEProducts

The best known primary products of beekeeping are honey and

wax, but pollen, propolis, royal jelly, venom and queen bees

are also marketable primary bee products. This article deals with honey, beeswax and royal jelly,

and serves to analyse the primary bee products market.

HoneyHoney can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

FOOD

Honey is most commonly consumed in its unprocessed state - e.g. liquid, crystallized or in the comb. They are also consumed as medicine, food or incorporated as an ingredient into various food recipes.

FOOD INGREDIENT Although now substituted by various sugars and sugar syrups, the traditional use of honey in food preparations are still being practiced.

BAKED PRODUCTSAlso used on a small scale at industrialized levels in baked products – honey is present in confectionary, candy, marmalades, jams, spreads, breakfast cereals, beverages, milk products and many preserved products. Baked products that contain honey tend to dry out more slowly, have a lesser tendency to crack, and offer an improved aroma.

“NATURAL”, HEALTH AND BIOLOGICAL

PRODUCTS These use honey abundantly

as a sweetener of first choice, together with non-refined sugars substituting for refined sucrose.

CONFECTIONARY PRODUCTION

For the production of caramels, breakfast cereals (in liquid,

dried or pulverized form) for better flavour and increased

consumer appeal. In candy bar production, honey is used as a

binding and sweetening agent.

INDUSTRIAL NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGEHoney is used due to the wider distribution of “functional” drinks, such as health-oriented strengthening and replenishing isotonic drinks. Iced tea can also be flavoured and clarified with the addition of honey.

CAKE MIXES, BREADS, AND DRINK OR ENERGY HEALTH POWDERSDried or dehydrated honey are used for these purposes.

OTHER APPLICATIONS ARE IN COSMETICS AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGESWhere additional water content is not desired or where handling of liquids increases production costs.

TOBACCO INDUSTRYHoney is used to improve and preserve tobacco’s aroma and humidity.

BeeswaxThough in many cases beeswax can be replaced with cheaper, synthetic waxes, it has very special characteristics, medicinal benefits, plasticity and aroma which ensure its continued use. Many of these characteristics cannot be achieved with artificial waxes. The trend for more natural products in cosmetics may also increase its use - such as:

CANDLE MAKINGBeeswax was the major raw material for candles until the development of cheaper petroleum products such as paraffin waxes. Beeswax candles remain straight under higher ambient temperatures, whereas candles made of paraffin tend to melt.

&

Page 10: BEE - CNI CORPORATION• Top-bar hive: Popular amongst amateur beekeepers, top bar hives were originally used as traditional beekeeping a method in both Greece and Vietnam. These have

METAL CASTINGS AND MODELLINGBecause of its plasticity, beeswax is easily formed and carved. It maintains its shape well, even over very long periods of time, and its relatively low melting point permits easy and complete removal from casting moulds. COSMETICS Beeswax provides solidity to emulsified solutions, facilitates the formation of stable emulsions, and increases the water holding capacity of ointments and creams.

FOOD PROCESSING Beeswax is used in a variety of products and processes, from packaging to processing and preservation. Many of these applications can be accomplished with other cheaper waxes, and most of these processes involve large scale and complicated production procedures.

TEXTILES AND PAPERSTextiles and paper can be waterproofed with various products containing beeswax.

VARNISHES AND POLISHESA good example is varnish made from dammar resin and beeswax used for painting and for art restoration.

Royal JellyRoyal jelly is secreted by the hypo pharyngeal gland (sometimes called the brood food gland) of young worker (nurse) bees, to feed young larvae and the adult queen bee.

China is unanimously recognized as the world’s largest producer and exporter of royal jelly. The country exports around 2.2 million lb./ year, while Japan has the highest consumption of the product. Because Royal jelly is the food intended for queen bee larvae, Royal jelly can only be sold in its fresh state, unprocessed except for being frozen or cooled, mixed with other products, or freeze-dried for further use in other preparations. Its commercial uses include:

FOOD AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS AND MEDICINE-LIKE PRODUCTS OR COSMETICS

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTSHealth benefits include increased energy and immune system protection. It also alleviates anxiety, asthma, moodiness and sleeplessness.

INGREDIENT IN FOOD PRODUCTS As a “functional food”, Royal jelly is also used in yogurt production, Vitamin supplements and fruit juices are enriched with freeze-dried royal jelly. Royal jelly is widely used in beverages in Asia.

COSMETIC INGREDIENTSRoyal jelly is included in many dermatological preparations, but mostly in those used for skin refreshing, skin regeneration and rejuvenation.

Bee PollenBee pollen (or bee bread or a pollen ball) is a mass of pollen that has been packed by worker honeybees into granules with added honey or nectar. Foraging bees bring pollen back to the hive, where they pass it off to other worker bees, who pack the pollen into cells with their heads. During the packing, the pollen is mixed with nectar, enzymes, fungi, and bacterial organisms.

Bee pollen is the primary source of protein for the hive. Pollen balls are harvested as food for humans and it is sometimes referred to as ambrosia. Its commercial uses include:

MEDICINETreatment of various prostate problems. Usually prescribed in its dry pellet form as collected by the bees.

FOOD SUPPLEMENTSMany health and food supplements contain bee pollen because of its supposed functional values.

COSMETICSUsed in cosmetics with claims of rejuvenating and nourishing effects for the skin.

PropolisPropolisis the sticky resinous sap which seeps from the buds of certain trees and oozes from the bark of others. The bees gather this “bee glue” and carry it back to the hive where it is blended with wax flakes secreted from special glands on the underside of the

bees’ abdomen. It is used to line the

interior of brood cells in preparation

for the Queens’ laying of eggs. With its antiseptic properties it provides a hospital clean environment for the rearing of brood.

Propolis is a very complex mixture that varies according to the source it comes from. At least 180 different compounds have been identified so far in propolis.

Propolis is a stable product, but should nevertheless be stored in airtight containers in the dark, preferably away from excessive and direct heat. Propolis does not lose much of its antibiotic activity, even when stored for 12 months or longer. Propolis and its extract function as a mild preservative due to their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and thus may actually prolong the shelf life of some products.

DIETARY AND THERAPEUTIC SUPPLEMENTSPropolis is sold in tablets and tinctures, and as an ingredient in lozenges, skin creams, shampoos, lipsticks, toothpastes and mouthwashes. Tinctures and lozenges are popular treatment for sore throats, and tinctures are often used to treat cuts, mouth sores and skin rashes.

INGREDIENT IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY The antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal activities of propolis also offer opportunities in food technology. In Japan, the use of propolis is permitted as a preservative in frozen fish.

Honey production is most active in the subarctic and temperate regions such as the former Soviet Union region (mainly Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia), China, North America, and European countries. There are also many honey producing countries with a wide variety of backgrounds at tropical and subtropical regions but with many technological issues that are waiting to be resolved.

According to Japan Beekeeping Honey Association, the numbers of beekeeping in the world is as follows. China has over 9 million bee colonies, former Soviet Union regions has nearly 9 million

bee colonies, United States has over 3 million bee colonies, Mexico has nearly 3 million bee colonies, Brazil has around 2 million bee colonies, and Argentina has around 1.5 million bee colonies. The production volume of honey around the world is estimated to add up to about 1.2 million tons. Of

this, China produces over 200,000 tons, former Soviet Union region produces nearly 200,000 tons, and the United States produces about 100,000 tons.

These 3 regions account to nearly half of the total production of honey in the world. In this situation, Japan is importing nearly 9 billion yen on money base and 40,000 tons on quantity base every year.
