The Rotary Knights of Pendragon invited historian Tali Nates to be a guest speaker at their meeting last Wednesday. Tali Nates is the Director of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre that will be opening soon, as well as a history lecturer. She is fascinated by the Holocaust,as her family, who come from Europe, was directly affected by it: her aunt and her grandmother were killed during the Nazi Germany Holocaust of the Jews.Nates has been studying the Holocaust of the Jews and genocide in Africa, specifically the Rwanda/Burundi unrests, and she feels that we can learn a lot from it. She spoke about the importance of history in modern society, and the Rotarians had the o p p o r t u n i t y to discuss modern day related issues. According to Nates, history should be studied so that we do not repeat it, but learn from it. She referred to social issues such as xenophob ia , homophobia, r a c i s m , political unrest

and violence and explained that history can show us warning signs through similar events that have transpired before, or suggest solutions. We also understand the world better when we know our history. Nates’s vision is to use the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre as an education centre for people to learn more about history and its value: why we have human rights and democracy; what its purpose is; how it should work and why it is important to respect it. “We want to try with education to say to the kids: there are always dilemmas, but we also have decisions. You have the choice between being a bystander or a helper,” Nates concluded.

April 1st 2009 the community of Alberton and Johannesburg South woke up to what many might have thought was an April’s fool joke – a brand new community news paper. A fresh approach to local news. 34 000 households received this new paper. Five years later, almost three million readers are reached through-out Ekurhuleni, Limpopo, Northwest and the Northern part of Gauteng. Two Alberton businessmen, Brian Blignaut and Riaan Jonker shared a dream of a local newspaper that will not only carry local news but will also interpret national and international news and trends in a free newspaper. With four staff members, who multi tasked, the first year was a 24/7 operation with many a tear and battle scars to show – where every day was a steep learning curve. As quickly as the staff contingent grew – currently 250 people – so did the editions. tame now boast with 7 ABC certified titles eg Alberton, Johannesburg South, Bedfordview -Germiston, Boksburg, Thokoza, Katlahong and Vosloorus.During 2013 Media24 saw the huge potential of the tame team and acquired an interest in the tame group. With them on board the idea of expanding the title took flight. First with the acquisition of a substantial interest in Leseding News covering Rustenburg, Brits and Hartebeespoort, then with Hammanskraal News – covering the larger Hammanskraal Districts and the latest paper to join the tame team is Rise n Shine covering all four districts of Limpopo eg Capricorn, Vhembe, Mopanie and Waterberg. In November 2012 tame Times bought their corporate head office in Michelle Avenue – many resident’s driving past will notice that there we burn the midnight oil many a night to bring the now 12

ABC certified papers to print. The hard work paid off and tame Times received the award for the Best Print Media in Ekurhuleni in 2012 and 2013. Tame Times was also a finalist in the Sanlam MDDA Best Established Small Independent Commercial Newspaper category in 2012. As tame Times takes pride in the relationship with the communities they serve we have created a Citizen Journalist platform where

readers can send in stories and photos which will either be published on our very interactive website, on our Facebook page or even in the paper. We are celebrating our 5 th birthday and invite you to come and share this joyous occasion with us. Come and view our offices to see how the newsroom and design offices function or to bring us a story, letter or photo that you want to be published.

you’d bea fool not to read tame times

tame TIMES would like to thank all their

loyal readers and advertisers for supporting them through

the first five years. tame TIMES looks forward to

the next five years building on these relationships and making

Mayor presents a progressive Ekurhuleni

Clr Gungubele during the delivery of the State of the City Address.

Ndu [email protected]

AT ATTENTION: EMPD officers during the inspection parade which followed the speech.

The much awaited State of the City Address was delivered by Ekurhuleni’s Executive Mayor; Councillor Mondli Gungubele on 26 March in Germiston. As expected the Mayor’s address centred on the region’s progress over the past twenty years of a democratic South Africa and more importantly over the fourteen years since the formation of the Metro.Gungubele’s speech took listeners through the experiences of fictional characters; Joe Citizen and Tshidi Citizen, frequently pausing to highlight progress and expose future plans for Ekurhuleni and its residents. The theme of the Address; Strengthening Social Maturity by Advancing Social Cohesion in Pursuit of a Prosperous and, therefore, Livable City, remained unchanged from the 2013 State of the City Address. In celebration of the achieved social cohesion after three centuries of institutionalized racism, Clr Gungubele began by quoting South Africa’s late former President; Nelson Mandela, who said “no one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”Some of the regions statistics in the Mayor’s speech were figures revealing the region as home to a quarter of the 12 million population of Gauteng, an estimated Gross Geographic Product of R204 billion which translates to 6.4% of the national GDP, and public and private investments approximated at R75 billion since 1994.

“These statistics continue to reaffirm our resolve that the economic policy pursuits of the democratic government have and are producing the desired results and impact. However, this is not to say that we are content with the current economic performance, especially in relation to employment creation given the prevailing high levels of poverty,” said Clr Gungubele. The Aeriortopolis development program, which has been the subject of many residents questions, also received a substantial amount of mention throughout the speech with the Mayor referring to its potential to redress the unacceptably high 38% unemployment rate which plagues the region. Development around the region through development programs like the Aeriortopolis according to the delivered speech will serve to equip the youth with skills and job opportunities. In the area of service delivery, Clr Gungubele spoke of an exess of R1.1 billion spent since 2005 for the renewal of electricity infrastructure, 90 000 houses constructed between 1994 and June 2013, over R120 million for replacement of fire engines, R7 million spent on the upgrading of the call centre while also in the process of recruiting 258 new agents to man the call centre, nine clinics which now operate around the clock and many more services which testified the progress of the City. In the area of industrialization of the City, Clr Gungubele made mention of PRASA’s decision to invest in the region by locating the PRASA-GIBELA train manufacturing plant in Dunotar, Springs. The investment by PRASA carries a R51 billion price-tag and is expected to be fully functional within three years of the sod turning ceremony is planned to take place in April 2014.

MOrE hIGhlIGhTS Of ThE SPEECh INCluDE:- 1100 participants of the Ekurhuleni Jobs Programme which took place in September 2012 have been successfully placed in jobs within the Metro and private companies.- The plans to relocate the Vaal University of Technology’s Chloorkop operations to the former Vista University Campus in Daveton.- The City’s water quality meeting SANS 241 standards and therefore maintaining the Platinum Blue Drop status.- Completed construction of sports facilities (stadiums) in Duduza, KwaThema, Wattville and Tsakane.- Successful hosting of the SA Golf Championship in 2011, 2013 and 2013 at the Glendower Golf Club which has been hailed (by SA Golf Association) as the best golf course in Gauteng.- Scheduled construction of BRT related infrastructure expected to commence in June 2014

At the end of his address Clr Gungubele and other members or the august Council visited members of the public who were seated at a public viewing facility just outside the council house. The mayor also participated in an inspection parade of EMPD officers before returning to the house for the mandatory debate around the State of the City Address.

The political scene is always interesting during the election year. Political parties pull out all stops to win votes with door to door campaigns, making promises, the key issues being improving service delivery and job creation. The report of the public prosecutor has added a new twist to this election year but nothing new for the Zuma administration. If we care to remember in the last election year President Jacob Zuma was facing rape charges and this time he has been accused of unduly benefiting from the Nkandla security upgrade, a finding that has seen opposition parties moving to have the President impeached, and the public is eagerly waiting to hear the president’s response to the public prosecutors report. One is starting to wonder if President Jacob Zuma is bigger than the ANC. Add to the mix the EFF is making unfounded promises to win votes. The new kid on the block which has pinned all its hopes on the popularity of its leader Julius Malema, who also has a sword hanging over his head, are making promises that they can’t possible live up too. With the calls for nationalisation of mines and the reserve bank, one can not help but wonder if exposed to that amount of wealth what would stop this leader from pocketing some of it. A leader who once demolished a R 3 million house in Sandton of all places to build a new one worth twice this amount if not more, I can’t but wonder how he has become an instant socialist, and someone we can trust with the countries wealth? The less said about the DA and the Maphele Ramphele debacle the better. There is no doubt that the ANC will win the elections, all that remains to be seen is how they will handle the Nkandla report. The next few weeks will be interesting as we draw nearer to the election date.

Do these above mentioned issues at all influence which party you will be delegating your voice to? Perhaps you have other views; let’s chat, email [email protected] or tweet us @NietoVoice

Bedfordview Arrests:

The Southern Suburbs Sports and Recreation Centre will soon be hosting one of the biggest local music DJ events in the history of the South: get ready for DJ in the Park.Experience SA’s favourite local DJs live in the South on 12 April 2014 for one day only. Top DJs that will be rocking it out on stage include: DJ Fresh, Crazy White Boy, Roger Goode, DJ Milkshake, Euphonik, Locnville, Lady Lea and Vin Deysel. Whether you are a house, electro-club, trance, hip-hop or pop music lover, DJ at the Park has it covered. Local amateur DJs had the opportunity to apply to open for the main acts at the event. These up-and-coming youngsters had the chance to showcase their talents earlier this year during a competition where they had to battle it out for four much-sought-after spots alongside Fresh and the like. The lucky winners include: DJ Bluelle, JR Square/Lowe (Jose Ray duo), DJ Oppies and DJ Dee Kay. According to the event manager Michelle Varner, from AJK 51, the aim of the event is to provide up-and-coming DJs with a platform where they can promote their music and network with respected artists in the industry. She also praises Matrix Warehouse for sponsoring the entire event;

without them, DJ in the Park would not be possible. “We want to do something special for the South; to uplift the community. We had a vision; if it is successful, we would love to do more throughout the year,” Varner said.

Sean Bovim’s production, Queen at the Ballet, Johannesburg performanc-es opened on Thursday 27 March at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre and runs until 13 April. The atmosphere in the foyer was electric and expect-ant with all seats occupied. Beautiful glossy calendar programs added to the expectation of a magical specta-cle. Beautiful costumes or at times almost no costumes at all were complimented by an interesting minimalist approach to dé-cor. Queen’s music was arranged by the well known conductor/composer Michael Hankinson with two male vocalists, Cito and Daniel Fisher. It is well known that Freddie Mercury’s four octave range is an ambitious task to perform and the vocalists have to be applauded for their efforts. The opening scene with Mercury and his red cloak draping over all the dancers will be a memorable moment and was aes-thetically pleasing to the audience. The choreography was appealing and fasci-nating to watch. Mercury’s life was portrayed using 20 Queen songs, focusing mostly on Mercury’s constant struggle with his homo-sexuality, however the depth and torture of his struggle was lost in the narrative. There were wonderful group numbers and the male lead Henk Opperman made in-teresting character choices which showed him (Mercury) much more comfortable with men as the scenes with the women seemed strained.Angela Kilian who made a special guest ap-

pearance in a beautiful dress singing “Barce-lona” had audience members applauding with great enthusiasm as they were mesmerised by the voice that came out her small body.Shows run from Wednesdays to Satur-days 20:00 and Sundays at 15:00.Tickets range from R100 – R280 and are on sale by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com, or by calling the theatre’s direct tick-eting line on 0861 670 670.

PLEASE NOTE:Queen At The Ballet runs for 2 hours including a 20-minute interval with no age restriction, but parental guid-ance is advised.

Heal your body from head to toe

Dr Nicole Puchner from Docs@Work is a local Chiropractor in Alberton who is passionate about improving the overall well-being of her patients. Dr Puchner’s chiropractic approach is wellness-orientated, neurologically based and holistic. She intricately assesses each patient as an individual, so that she can correct the underlying cause of physical discomfort, rather than merely treating the symptoms.According to Dr Puchner, Chiropractics is much more complex than most people realise: “We are not bone crunchers. Every adjustment is very specific and stimulates a complex nervous system response. The important factor is that the adjustment has the power to alter the body’s physiology so that it can return to a healthy normal state,” Dr Puchner explains. When a

patient experiences physical discomfort, illness or pain, it can often be traced back to an interference in the nervous system (comprising of the brain, spinal cord and nerves), which causes the body to malfunction. The nervous system connects every part of the body with the brain and serves as a vital communication system between the two. When any part of the system is interrupted, the communication is compromised and the body cannot function properly. Dr Puchner aims to correct the point of interference with the help of advanced testing and physical adjustments. In the end, the patient’s body should be aligned, self-regulating and healthy. Dr Puchner identifies three main types of stress that build up over time to cause interference:Physical – the birth process itself, falls, car accidents, injuries, repetitive strain, poor sleep habits, poor posture, altered tone, foot pronation.Chemical – food allergies/intolerances, poor diet, processed foods, exposure to chemicals or environmental toxins.Emotional – stress, negative and anxious thoughts, depression, past traumas that still affect you.Dr Puchner emphasises that health care is a partnership; thus 50% of healing comes from the doctor and 50% from the patient’s lifestyle and co-operation. It is therefore preferable to book follow-up sessions, rather than booking a once-off consultation. This will enable the doctor to monitor your improvement and to adjust your body accordingly, until it is healed. Dr Puchner urges each person to have a chiropractic assessment, even if you feel fine, to identify potential interference points early on. Interferences that are left untreated can have devastating health consequences later in life. Prevention is therefore better than cure.

Invest in your long-term health today by making a booking with Dr Puchner. She adjusts people of all ages; from new born babies, to the elderly: Practice:

Diabetic patients and their eyesWe have all heard of the condition called diabetes mellitus, and most people know the effect it can have on the body, but do we know what effects diabetes can have on one of your most valuable assets, your eyes?

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common disorder characterized by sustained hyperglycaemia of varying severity secondary to lack of diminished efficacy of endogenous insulin, or in human language as “Wikipedia” would describe it- condition in which a person has a high blood sugar level. DM can cause renal, vascular, ocular, neurological and other complications. Some of these conditions can cause irreversible vision loss and it is very important to monitor your eye health annually at an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The most prevalent cause of legal blindness

between the ages of 20 and 65 years is Diabetic retinopathy (DR). Diabetic Retinopathy exhibits features of both micro-vascular occlusion and leakage, and can cause irreversible retinal damage. You are at a higher risk to develop DR if you have diabetes for more than 10 years, have poor metabolic control, poor pre-pregnancy control of diabetes, if you have hypertension or if you are obese. It is important that all diabetic patients undergo an ocular screening with their optometrist and those with risk factors for visual loss should be referred to an ophthalmologist. Having your eyes reviewed annually and optimal control of diabetes and associated risk factors, would minimize your chances of developing DR drastically.

primrose police arrested two minors for possession and dealing in dagga at one of the high schools in primrose on 25 march.A school teacher notified Primrose police that two boys were caught with dagga at school. According to the school learners, one of the suspects was not only smoking the dagga, but selling it to other learners as well. The minors were only 16-years-old and police therefore had to follow the Child Justice Act, which stipulates that the minors have be released into the care of their parents: “A police official must release a child on a written notice in terms of section 18 into the care of a parent […] before the child appears at the preliminary inquiry,” states the Child Justice Act 75 of 2008. The suspects and their parents will face the child justice court soon where it will be decided how and where the children can be rehabilitated in a safe environment. “We as police discourage illegal substances at schools, we are promoting safer school learning for our learners,” said Sergeant Styles Maome. If you are a substance abuser and need help quitting the habit, contact the emergency call centre on 011 458 0911 ; alternatively dial 10 177 or 112. To report a crime .

primrose police arrested two suspects on 18 march for house break-in and theft in Wolf Street. One of the suspects was a minor aged 16 and the other was a man aged 32. The resident reported that she allegedly left the house early for work, but her husband remained at home as he was feeling ill. When the complainant returned home later that morning, she noticed that their house had been broken into through the garage window. She went straight to the bedroom to check on her husband and found him as she had left him. He was unaware of the break-in, and he went to investigate the garage. He found that two speakers were stolen, but everything else seemed normal. Primrose police followed the leads and two suspects were arrested. The suspects have since appeared in Germiston court.

primrose police visited hoërskool Goudrif on Friday 28 march to teach the children about crime and safety. the police are visiting various schools in the area throughout the year as part of their social crime prevention campaign.Captain Patricia Fakude from Primrose SAPS addressed the learners and highlighted four main issues: smash-and-grab, hijacking, theft out of a motor vehicle and house robbery. Capt. Fakude warned learners not to leave valuables in plain sight on car seats, as it gives criminals the opportunity to commit a crime. She also handed out pamphlets about substance abuse, as they will be conducting more random drug searches at schools throughout the year.

According to Capt. Fakude, hijacking and smash-and-grab are two of the most common crimes committed in Primrose and she wants to make learners aware of safety hazards: “With social crime prevention in Primrose we see the need that before a crime is committed, we must make [people] aware, so that they have safety tips to prevent crime before it happens,” said Capt. Fakude. The Primrose Crime Prevention Youth Desk accompanied the police and did a special performance for the learners on stage to illustrate the crime prevention message. The Life Rosacres Clinic joined the Primrose police on their visit to the school and informed the children about how to prevent TB-infections in school.

Fans of novelist Leanne Hunt were in for a treat when the Linksfield-based author signed copies of Jozi Gold at Books Galore at Greenstone Mall recently. Trained in journalism and with experience as a counsellor, Leanne Hunt was inspired to write the novel in the midst of the build-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.“The novel grew out of a picture I had in my mind of various individuals who were unknown to each other but linked by their context and their relationships to one man. What started out as a thought experiment ended up as a fast-paced, complex romantic drama. The characters came alive for me and drove the action forward in a way I could scarcely foresee. In fact, it came as a real surprise that the outcome was so deliciously satisfying,” says Hunt.Jozi Gold is available at Exclusive Books, Books Galore, through www.porcupinepress.co.za and on www.kalahari.net

Izak Berg writes:

Positives:Residents of the EMM enjoy a better standard of life today because the economic growth is higher today as before 1994. The number of ratepayer contributing to the coffers has grown resulting that the EMM can increase their budget in catering for the poorest of the poor (black & white). The reserves and cash flow of the EMM is very healthy if not the healthiest of all municipalities and Metro’s in South Africa. Ekurhuleni is very fortunate that we can borrow monies in assisting the Metro in budgeting for capital projects in the formerly disadvantage areas because the interest rate is much lower today than before 1994. The gross fixed investment has gone up from 15% of the gross domestic product (GDP) to 19% resulting in the EMM being able to give dignity to its residents by giving them quality running water, doing away with pit toilets and giving free electricity to the poorest of the poor residents (black & white). This is why the EMM has an influx of people of 2.5% as indicated by the Mayor. People go where there is service delivery but it is putting strain on the current ratepayers of the EMM and service delivery. The fact that the EMM has the least of service delivery protests of any Metro in South Africa is also an indication that the EMM is successful in delivering basic services to its residents.

Negatives:The current account deficit is up since 1994, a dollar cost twice as much as before 1994 which is putting strain on the EMM budget on goods that needs to be imported for service delivery whether it is done by the EMM or their subcontractors. Private businesses investment as a proportion of total investment has dropped from more than 70% to less than 65%, the EMM needs to relook at their contribution charges regarding new developments (reducing it) in making sure that businesses relocate to the EMM. The proportion of disposable income that households can save has dropped to zero, this is due to the increases of electricity and rates and taxes since 2000 and also the increase in the fuel price since 1994 and now the levying of e-tolling fees. The annual savings in the country have dropped from 17% of GDP to 14%. Unemployment has grown faster than jobs since 1994 and the unemployment rate in the EMM is much higher than the national rate. The fact that the number of discouraged work seekers has risen creating an atmosphere for disaster if one looks at what is currently happening in Egypt and other countries with high unemployment rates.

Government expenditure as a share of the GDP is up from 27% to 33% since 1994. The number of employees in the EMM has increased by 22% since 2000 but the quality of service delivery has not increased by the same percentage. Ratepayers are paying for quality service delivery and they are entitled to it. The EMM has levied an area cleansing levy since July 2013 collecting close to R4 million per month which can create close to 2000 informal jobs and improve the cleanness of the city, but this program has yet to be implemented although the charges are levied. Fraud and corruption is still not under control in the EMM and it takes too long to bring the culprits to book if at all. The EMM gives the impression that it is not serious about fighting fraud and corruption. Investigations conducted by the Internal Audit Department of the EMM are also taking too long to complete resulting in the EMM losing millions through fraud and corruption. The positive side of most of the negatives or shortcomings is that it can be rectified in a relatively short time.

shame:SA has inherited a Shame called apartheid (Germany has inherited a shame called Adolf Hitler and so has many countries in the world) but what is remarkable is how we as South Africans have dealt with it. The fact that the majority of South Africans (black and white) are GOD fearing people played a role as did the quality of leaders who created an atmosphere by ending apartheid (credit must go to Nelson Mandel, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and FW de Klerk). If you are a GOD fearing nation GOD will never abandon such a nation. The abolishing of apartheid set free all the people of South Africa (black and white) creating the rainbow nation (just a pity that I can’t find the colours white and black in the rainbow). The president and leader of the ANC Jacob Zuma has brought a toxic shame to South Africa (as indicated in the release of the Nkandla report by the public protector) and it’s shameless how the ruling party is still trying to protect him in instead of removing him from power. One only has to look what happened to Mubarak, Gaddafi and Hussein when they became more important than their countries and one can only pray that South Africa will be spared such actions. How was it possible for Zuma and Malema to removing Mbeki but the ANC who is more than 100 years old can’t remove Zuma? This is not good for South Africa and one can only say it is a blessing that Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu is not with us anymore to see what they have fought for and sat in jail or exile for, for so many years are destroyed by one person.

its President; themba godi has issued a statement welcoming the release of the Public Protector’s Nkandla report. the aPC believe that although the report was

balanced, it exposed a few fundamental

governmental failings including;

A lack of integrity in the procurement process within the Public Works DepartmentPoor contract management capacity especially as it relate to timeframes and allocated budget and escalation of costs which has plugged almost all the work handled by the Public Works Department“It must be noted that even the Public Works Department’s own renovation ran over budget from around R60 Million to around R300 Million which is a clear demonstration that the Department has fully collapsed and was in no position to fulfil its constitutional mandate,” said GodiGodi also reiterated the Public Protector’s findings which suggested that justice should meet the individuals who benefited financially undeservedly during the construction of President Zuma’s Nkandla homestead. Godi added that the APC further believed that government has poorly communicated the Nkandla issue and acted in a sloppy manner which exposed the president to underserved criticism and prejudice. “We also support the current ongoing effort by the Public Works to re-capacitate and redirect the department as well as the reviewal of contracts in which Public Works entered into and hope that this blatant scourge will be arrested soon” said Godi in conclusion.

Eastleigh Primary school was recently awarded first prize in the Securex Keep it Clean School Programme Competition.Hygiene Conditions in South African schools are generally poor. With this in mind, Bliss Brands created the Securex School Programme. The aim was to encourage children to get into the simple habit of washing their hands. This basic habit can help prevent the spread of disease and in turn curb absenteeism, giving children a better chance to excel both in the classroom and on the sports field.

The learners at Eastleigh Primary School in Johannesburg completed the most number of workbooks out of 80 primary schools that were part of the programme. The workbooks contained fun learning activities centred around good hygiene practices that can make a world of difference to one’s lifestyle. The Securex School Programme was implemented across 80 primary schools throughout Gauteng and reached over 50 000 learners. The initiative benefited both children and their families.

Each class prepared a cake which was entered for adjudication by the staff; the entries revealed a high level of creativity and at the end of the judging process two classes were announced as the competition winners (Gr2G and Gr4DD).To work off the sugar from all the cake and

sweets, the learners took to the obstacle course of jumping castles to finish off the day of fun and celebration.Speaking to tame TIMES the school’s deputy headmaster confirmed that the year would be filled with many other celebrations, each targeting different people who have connected with the school.“We encourage members of the community which we exist in, former students and staff members to keep watching our website (www.germistonsouthprimary.co.za) and the media for further updates on upcoming events all planned to commemorate Germiston South Primary’s 90 years.”

With everything made super easy whether you prefer booking your ticket at the self-help desk or you just like good old human interaction, their friendly staff are always available to help with your ticket booking or getting a snack at the kiosk. From action to Romance and everything in between, there’s movies for everyone. I opted for the film starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, the Action Comedy “Ride Along”. You can always count on Kevin Hart to bring humour into any awkward situation, not to give too much away but the film is set in Atlanta where a fast talking high school security guard Ben

(Kevin Hart) goes on a 24 hour ride along with his tough and overprotective soon-to-be brother in law James (Ice Cube) all to prove he’s worthy to marry James’ little sister. While trying obviously too hard to impress James, Ben’s day quickly turns into comedy gold with unexpected twists and turns, high speed car chases, accidental shootings, impersonations, tight shirts and buildings blowing up. The awkward pair must get through the day without getting killed or killing each other.Directed by Tim Story, My friends and I rate the movie three out of five so grab a friend, partner, sibling or parent and head out to Ster-Kinekor Eastgate for a good laugh.

Recently, Alexandra van Veijeren (14) and Tayla de Bie (11) both students at the Molfessis – Wells school of ballet, took part in auditions hosted by the American Academy of Ballet in Pretoria. The two talented young dancers both won partial bursaries to attend the AAB Summer school of Excellence in July, in New York. Alexandra, a Grade 9 pupil at St Andrews started ballet at only 2 years old but stopped when she was 6. When she turned 11, she decided to return to ballet training and very quickly progressed. Alexandra dances with incredible sensitivity and style, and beautiful line. Her dancing shows an endearing vulnerability which captivates her audience and, showing maturity way beyond her years; she has made an impression on examiners and judges alike and is sure to become a true superstar in the ballet world. Tayla de Bie started ballet when she was 3 years old and it was soon apparent that she was exceptionally talented. Her dancing is strong and confident, musical and controlled. Only 11 years old, Tayla is already comfortable with pointe work way beyond her “official” level. This young lady takes on every new ballet step with tenacity and never quits until she can perform it flawlessly. With her natural acting skills, she has no trouble engaging her audience and she is truly a delight to the entire studio. Both girls are taught by Penny Molfessis and

Jacqui Wells. Penny Molfessis was a senior soloist for the SA Ballet Theatre where she became famous for her portrayal of leading roles like Juliet, Swanhilda and many more. She was no stranger to standing ovations, with beautiful clean technique and an honesty to her performances that brought the characters she danced to life. She trained in South Africa, Bulgaria and the Royal Ballet in London. Jacqui Wells is like a Matriarch of ballet in South Africa. A senior, dual, international examiner for the RAD, Jacqui has more than 40 years of dance and teaching experience. With coaching by these two amazing teachers, and the unwavering support from family members, it is easy to see how Alex and Tayla have become such wonderful young dancers.

However, once the final putt dropped to seal her victory, Bregman beamed a broad smile at the cheering crowds that revealed exactly what the victory meant to the 27-year-old from Johannesburg.“This is so much more than just another victory for me,” an emotional Bregman said. “This week has been a real breakthrough. I have struggled with patience for so long, and I finally conquered that demon. It feels like I have knocked two monkeys of my back.“I’m am so thrilled with this win and to the first Zambia Ladies Open Championship trophy.”Bregman began with a two shot lead over Nobuhle Dlamini after earlier rounds of 71 and 69. The Swazi golfer mounted a spirited challenge on the front nine, and lagged just a shot behind when Bregman took the turn at five under. The champion’s newfound patience won the day, though.“In the first round, I dropped four shots on the front nine but rallied with six birdies over the back nine, and in the second round, I also made my birdies on the back nine,” she said.“I knew I had to bide my time. I managed myself well on the front nine to drop just the one shot at the fifth. The last nine holes has definitely been kinder to me and I knew I could score on the home stretch. I just had to bide my time.”

On the surface, the recent news from England does not bode well for their national game. I refer to the “Trott” incident, where the press led everyone to believe he left the Australian tour for reasons akin to a “stress-related” illness. The player himself in an interview refuted these reasons and said he was in fact suffering from “burn-out”. This is surely not just an issue for England’s cricketers then, as this will become a world cricket problem; and this is why I believe they have only scratched the surface of the problem. I praise Trott for his honesty and explaining why he walked away from one of the most

respected series in world cricket. One can only sympathise with the ECB because they have dealt with issues of stress in national players before, notably Marcus Trescothick and Steven Harmison, so it was easy for them to resort to that as a reason. Are we as South African cricket supporters thinking that this issue brought, which I believe the premature retirements, of Kallis and Smith as well? Perhaps our national players time it right, but we will never know. The fact of the matter is that Professional Burn-Out is a very real and very common problem among top sportsman who are in the public eye on a daily basis. The modern professional sportsman spend an enormous amount of time away from home, either travelling or training and YES, it does eventually take a toll on their life and it also affects people in corporate industries, so why not a sportsman. Often we lose sight of the fact that these sporting heroes are in fact just human beings exactly like you and I, with perhaps a little more talent or desire in their chosen pursuit. They feel emotions, they get tired, fatigued, listless and lethargic at their work place, but the difference is, we have a way of getting over our problems, we take a day or two off to recover. Maybe the boss takes a little work load away from us. This is not the case with these cricketers who are expected to perform at the same highly demanding level every single day and in every single competition; and that on its own, is exhausting and mentally draining. The sports seasons of professionals are too demanding and too long and I fear that this “burn-out” phenomenon may become more prevalent among other top sportsman. The corporate sponsors treat them like commodities to be traded and utilized at their whim; and the human element is very often absent. I agree that the potential of earning big money in the game today is huge, but at what cost to the individual. Whether the actions of Jonathan Trott are considered betraying team trust, or whether the press and players wish to criticize him, the fact remains that his honesty about the issue and his decision to leave the tour, may have done more good for the future of the game and its management of people than harm.Regards and thank you

Champions league continues to elude PSL sides Ndu Ngwenya

[email protected]

Champions league continues to elude PSL sides South africa is hailed on the african continent as the country with the most professional and most watched domestic soccer league, however Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams are yet to carry this recognition into continental competition. With the exception of Orlando Pirates, no other PSL side has won the coveted Champions League.

Kaizer Chiefs was the latest local side to vie for continental glory after having won the local league in the previous season (2012 - 2013). Amakhosi, as Chiefs are fondly known by their supporters, started their Champions League campaign on a high note, maintaining the same amount of dominance in the initial stages of the Champions League. Chiefs beat their first opponents; Black Africa (Namibia) 4-1 on aggregate. Chiefs then made

light work of Liga Muculmana of Mozambique, beating them 7-0 on aggregate. Kaizer Chiefs then lost momentum in their first leg tie against the DRC’s AS Vita, losing 3-0 away from home. Chiefs seemed to have found their form in the return fixture on Saturday 29 March, but could only find 2 goals, bringing the aggregate score to 3-2 in favor of the DRC side and an abrupt end to South Africa’s champions league hopes.

Goals by Knowledge Musona and Morgan Gould were little too late to make up for the first leg (3-0) loss to AS Vita or to secure Kaizer Chiefs’ progress in the CAF Champions League. Photo from: Kickoff.com
