BECOMING A MEMBER OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GREATER TORONTO AREA

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA) was established in April 2014 through the amalgamation of the Habitat for Humanity affiliates of Brampton Caledon, Toronto and York Region.

Applications are now being accepted for 2018 - 2019 membership. Submissions must be received on or before November 1st 2017.

OUR MISSION

Vision A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.

Mission Statement To mobilize volunteers and community partners to help hardworking, low income families break the cycle of poverty through affordable homeownership.

Core Values Housing for all: We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that

should be available to all.

Human dignity: We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve and those that help us in this effort and recognize them as our greatest resource.

Partnership: We believe we can best achieve our mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with others.

Faith in action: We believe that faith is lived through action. Building on our Christian foundation, we serve and work with people of all faiths and beliefs in a spirit of justice and compassion.

We believe there is a role for everyone committed to our vision, mission and values and we seek to enrich our organization through diversity.

ROLE OF MEMBERS

Members play an integral role in the governance of Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA). Members are distinct from volunteers in that members have important legal rights and obligations as determined by legislation governing not-for profit corporations. These rights relate to the governance of Habitat GTA and include, among other things, the right to:

• attend and participate in annual and other meetings of members;• receive and review the annual financial statements;• vote on matters put forward for approval, including the election of directors;• hear about any other business, including reports on Habitat GTA’s progress;• approve the by-laws and any amendments; and• approve significant changes to the purposes of Habitat GTA.

We encourage volunteers and interested individuals to consider adding to their important role within Habitat GTA, by choosing to actively participate in the governance of Habitat GTA as a member. The criteria for membership are set out below under the heading “Membership Qualification.” Membership is open to individuals who meet the criteria and support the vision, mission and values of Habitat for Humanity. By applying for membership, you are offering to play an important role in ensuring that the purposes of Habitat GTA are being met.

Your personal information will be used to administer and maintain your membership, and to keep you informed about the work, membership issues, and events of Habitat GTA. Habitat GTA will not disclose or share your personal information except where required by law. Please complete all three sections of the attached application form.
