GALA opened in August with 100 girls in 6 th grade, 60 in 9 th grade, and will grow by two grade levels per year to be full 6 th through 12 th grade in 2020. GALA families are geographically (girls come from 51 schools in 49 zip codes), economically (58% free and reduced lunch) and racially (5 % Asian, 28% African-American, 25% Caucasian, 38% Latino, 4 % other) diverse, and committed to a highly rigorous, college prep curriculum. The curricular focus is science, technology, engineering, and math with a special emphasis on engineering and computer science. Girls complete A-G requirements but also work on social emotional skills through an advisory system. Advisors work with Careergirls.org, an interactive website with videos of women in non-traditional careers covering specific topics, such as this month’s unit on integrity. Girls also work with technology and on hands-on kinesthetic learning. Our mission is to have girls develop the skills and resiliency to graduate on time, attend highly selective colleges, and become the next generation of leaders in the STEM field.
