TheSanskritword“hatha”isthejoiningofthetwooppositewordsofsunandmoon.Therootofthewordyogais“yuj”,whichmeanstoyoke.Thismeansthat“hathayoga”(themostcommonlypracticedformofyoga)involvestheyokingorjoiningofoppositesandthehar-monythatisfoundonthemiddlepathbetweenthem.Amanwhopracticesyogaiscalleda“yogi”,andawomanwhopracticesyogaisreferredtoasa“yogini”.

Yoga teaches us to live in the inner and outer worlds more harmonious-lythroughdevelopingahighdegreeofself-awareness.Youwillteachyourstudentstoquiettheirmindsandtofindadegreeofmentalpeaceandrelieffromthementalchatterthattheyhearmostoftheirwakingmoments.

1.1 The Desire to TeachItwouldbehardformostyogainstructorstopinpointtheexactdayand place that they began envisioning themselves no longer as a stu-dentofyoga,butratherastheteacher.Howdidithappenforyou?

Perhapsitbeginswithadmiringyourownteacher,andrecognizingthatheorsheismakingadifferenceinstudents’livesbyguidingthemintoandthroughtheever-deepeninglayersofyoga.Likelyyouhavebeendoingyogaforseveralyears,takingclassesweeklyandpracticingat home.

Itissafetosayatthispointthatthepowerandthetransformationalmagicofyogahavetakenyoutoaplaceofself-knowledge,andyoufeelastrongneedtolearnmore.Youmaybeexperiencing“tapas,”whichisaburningenthusiasm,andaglowingcommitmenttobecomingayogainstructor.Youmaywanttoenableotherstoexperiencesomeofthejoythatyouhavefoundinyoga.

1.2 Yoga Then and Now Inthe‘60sand‘70stherewasonlyasmallcoreofyogastudentsandteachers.Ifyouaskedtheaveragepersonthenwhatyogawas,theymightdescribesomeonepracticing“pretzelposesonabedofnails”.Todayyogaisatazenithinitspopularity.Therearealldifferentstylesofyoga,andonecantakeayogaclassatanygymorineventhesmall-esttownfromCaliforniatoMaine. Opportunitiestoteachyogaaboundinthisfertileenvironment.Ac-cording to data released in 2008 by the magazine Yoga Journal,about15.8millionpeople,or6.9percentofU.S.adults,practicedyogawhilein2012,thatnumberhadincreasedtoabout20.4million(Source:www.yogajournal.com/uncategorized/new-study-finds-20-million-yogis-u-s/).That’sanincreaseof29%inonlyfouryears!Andthetotalamountofdollarsspenthasalmostdoubled,from$5.7billionin2008to$10.3billion in 2012.

By reminding your students to observe their reactions to the poses and thebreathingexercisesyoucanguidethemintogreaterself-awareness.Knowing that you are presenting your students with a situation where thepossibilityofpositivechangeisever-presentisexciting.

As a yoga instructor you provide a great service to your students. You willbeinasituationwhereyoucanseeavisibledifferenceinthefacesofthepeoplewhofirstwalkintoclassandtheoneswholeave.Asateacheryourintentionwillinevitablybetohelppeoplefindtheirowninnertruthjustasyouhaveasastudent.Yourmaintaskistopresenttheyogayouknowasauthenticallyasyoucanwhileteachingfromyourheartandlearnedskillssimultaneously.Whenyoudothis,youwillseethetransformationgraduallyhappeninginyourstudents.

Ongoing Learning

Teaching yoga is a continuum that is tied to your own growth in yoga. Youwillfindthatasyoubeginteaching,youwillwantmoreandmoreexperienceandknowledgeforyourself.Themoreyogaisinyourownbody,mind,andspirit,themoreyouwillhavetoteachyourstudents.

Therefore,bybecominganinstructoryouwillalsohavebecomeabet-terstudentofyoga.Asayogainstructoryoustepintoanurturingandsustaining loop that enables you to grow and learn as you teach. The essenceofyogawillcomethroughyourteachingsandwillgrowasyoudo.Asyourexperienceincreases,itwillmakeyouabetterteacher.

Personal Freedom

Asayogainstructoryouhaveahighdegreeofautonomy.Oncetheclassbeginsandyourstudentsareintheirplaces,whatyousayanddoistotallyuptoyou.Evenifyouareemployedbyastudio,theownerofthatestablishmentwillleavethedecisionsofteachingcompletelyuptoyourjudgment.Theremayberequirementsastoweeklythemesforclassesorevenadresscode,butonceyouarehiredtoteach,therestisuptoyou.Ifyouteachatahealthcluborgym,thegroupfitnessdirec-torwillrelyonyourexpertise.And,ifyouhaveorganizedyourownclassesorsetupyourownstudio,theonlyrestrictionscomefromyourownsenseofwhetheryourstudentsenjoytheclassesandlearnfromthem.

Creatingabusinessasayogateachergivesyoufreedomtosetyourhours and decide which days you will teach and which days you will not.Youcanfrequenttheplacesthatotherscangoonlyonweekends,and go there when the crowds have gone home. You can decide what yourprioritiesareandfollowthem,ratherthandoingasaboss’sneedsdictate.

As with every situation there are some demands on your time. Al-thoughyouarenotdictatedtoasfarasyouremployer’sneeds,thereistheelementofstudents’schedules.Youmustbeavailabletoteachwhenotherpeopleinthe9-to-5workforcearefree.Thatmeansteachingonweekendsandeveningsorearlymornings.Healthclubsandyogastu-diosoftenhavesixo’clockeveningclassesandsixo’clockmorningclasses.Peoplelovetobegintheirweekendwithayogaclassaswell.Thatleavesyouteachingatthosetimes,butifyoulovewhatyouaredoing,it’shardlyaninconvenience.
