encounter One church-Three locations
ministries
Trust &Become
It's been said that 80% of people who start attending church have done so because someone invited them.
In light of this information, both Duff Street United Methodist Church \ and United Methodist Temple
will be participating in Back to Church Sunday on September 17, 2017.
This national program encourages Christians to invite to church on that day friends and family, neighbors
and co-workers. It's also a great way to invite inactive members to come back to church.
As a follow-up campaign, Duff Street AND Temple will be using the resource “The Case for Christ”, a
four-week series based on the 2017 movie about a skeptical journalist who comes to faith in Christ after
investigating the facts about Jesus.
The follow-up campaign for both churches starts September 24.
Please pray for all students, teachers, service personnel and others returning
to school.
A Time of Prayer for our United Methodist Church and
The Work of the Commission on the Way Forward
Our Bishop is calling us to join in a time of prayer the first week of October , 2017. As
your District Superintendent, I am asking all of our Wesleyan District Parish Coordinators to
work within each of our parishes to organize our prayer times. As you know, they (the
Commission) will be meeting to determine how to go forward with the human sexuality issue
we are facing.
And they and our Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball need your prayer support so that they may
discern rightly God's word and will for the future of the United Methodist Church.
Therefore, I will call the Parish Coordinators together for a time of prayer and discernment
and then they will speak with all of you within their parishes to order the prayer times.
Please make sure all of you, pastors and laity, are a part of this Time of Prayer the first week
of October.
Ephesians 3:16-29 says concerning prayer:
"THAT GOD WOULD GRANT YOU, ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GLORY, TO BE
STRENGTHENED WITH MIGHT THROUGH HIS SPIRIT IN THE INNER MAN, THAT CHRIST
MAY DWELL IN YOUR HEARTS THROUGH FAITH; THAT YOU, BEING ROOTED AND
GROUNDED IN LOVE MAY BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND WITH ALL THE SAINTS WHAT IS
THE WIDTH AND LENGTH AND DEPTH AND HEIGHT- TO KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST
WHICH PASSES KNOWLEDGE; THAT YOU MAY BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF
GOD."
Romans 15:5-6, 13 says:
"MAY THE GOD OF PATIENCE AND COMFORT GRANT YOU TO BE LIKE-MINDED TOWARD
ONE ANOTHER ... THAT YOU MAY WITH ONE MIND AND ONE MOUTH GLORIFY
GOD....MAY THE GOD OF HOPE FILL YOU WITH ALL JOY AND PEACE IN BELIEVING, THAT
YOU MAY ABOUND IN HOPE BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT."
The peace of Christ be with you all!!!

Whoever brings blessings will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. Proverbs 11:25
According to VolunteerMatch.org reasons people volunteer include: (take a look at their website!)
Giving back is part of life- Volunteering is something they’ve always done or is an integral part of their religious practice.
Gee, I know quite a few of these people and I appreciate all they do! I can relate as my parents and my church both
inspired me to “give back”.
They Care about the cause-Some people are compelled to help a cause they relate to or an organization that has assisted
them in the past. I have been blessed!
Personal Satisfaction-People like knowing that they have done a good thing or helped someone else.
Do you know?
Studies show volunteering offers benefits, from improved interpersonal communications skills to increased knowlege
about topics that are related to your volunteering experience. Studies also show volunteering can reduce stress, improve
mental health and increase your own live satisfaction.
And….Volunteering looks good on a resume and may assist you in landing a job!
Hey pretty impressive list of upsides for doing something that does not cost you a dime. (Well you may have to purchase
ingredients to make that casserole you bring to all the pot lucks.)
There are many opportunities to volunteer throughout our churches and communities and in a variety of ways. You will
find many throughout the newsletter as you read. I can connect you with others.
Also you might want to look at www.daytoserve.org for ideas to serve/volunteer. This is an annual initiative that
transcends political and religious differences. It unites people of all faiths, races, cultures, and background with the
shared goal of helping those in need and improving the communities where we live. According to the site West Virginia’s
period to serve begins September 11-Octobor 10th. They suggest, “Just choose one or more days to serve.”
In 2016 the WEST VIRGINIA DAY TO SERVE accomplishments included:
Service Projects over 550
Total Volunteers over 10,200
Total Youth Volunteers over 3,900
Total Volunteer Hours over 42,000
Food Collected (Pounds) over 131,200
Garbage collected (Bags) over 3.500
I also spoke with a friend of mine this morning, who works in the healthcare field. She said, “the need is so great for
persons who would make themselves available to just listen to her patients. Some of them do not have any family, some
are scared and others are lonely.

HAPPY 10th ANNIVERSARY
OPEN HEART MINISTRIES
2007 -2017
I remember so well our humble beginnings, working out of one end of my office on the second
floor of the Duff Street UMC. We began with just the three of us, Diana Higginbotham, John
Eklund and me. Soon we added another volunteer, Jennifer. As time went on we became
known around the community for the ministry we were doing with low income and
economically disadvantaged neighbors across the city. People who struggle everyday just to
make ends meet. Before long we were working with other partners, community groups,
agencies and churches. All the while bringing hope and help to many people who came
through our doors, needing assistance with rent or utility bills. Sometimes there were other
needs a family might have had: like a refrigerator, or beds for children, small house repairs and
the like. And all the while God was blessing the ministry in many ways, with volunteers,
finances, new partner churches all across our county.
As I look back over the years of the ministry there have been many changes as well. Volunteers
have had to leave for one reason or another, but others have always come on board to take
their place. Presently we are so blessed to have 11 very faithful volunteers, who give of their
time and talents to the ministry. Praise God.
The office has moved three times since we began ten years ago. The most recent has been to
the United Methodist Temple on Locust Street. A "place of new beginnings", we have begun to
settle in now and making this place our home. We are so grateful for the many years Duff Street
UMC housed the ministry and for their hospitality-- Thank you Duff Street Church.
We go into the next ten years celebrating what has been and looking to the future with hopeful
visions, knowing that we do not go alone. God always leads the way. Amen.
Continuing with you on the journey,
Gayle Lesure, Director OHM

Beginning in September the Girl Scouts will start
collecting used, broken, unwanted crayons to send to
the “Crayon Initiative, who will remanufacture them to
provide new crayons to Children’s Hospitals. The wax
from crayons is not biodegradable and will never break
down, leaving a waxy sludge in our landfills for
centuries to come. Annually, over 5000,000 pounds of
broken crayons are discarded in landfills through the
country. By collecting unwanted crayons from
restaurants, schools, as well as other locations, and
recycling them into new ones The Crayon Initiative is
doing its part to protect our environment.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
During an interview, I was once asked, “What is the greatest challenge facing the youth at the
House of the Carpenter?” As I paused, I was peppered with answers from my interviewer, “Is it the
drugs? The poverty? The violence?” After a moment, I answered, “It is the lack of hope because of a lack
of vision that things can be better.” When getting high is normal, when being hungry is normal, when
people screaming and hitting one another becomes normal, it is hard to envision anything better and even
harder to imagine your life can be different. George Washington Carver said, “Where there is no vision,
there is no hope.” A paraphrase of Proverbs 29:18 reads “without hope the people perish.”
Six years ago the HOC saw about 350 people a week coming for food and clothing. Today, we
see over 1,300 people a week for food, clothing, addiction recovery, youth development, Bible study,
education and worship. Every week, someone tells us how their life has changed because of the people
and the ministry of the HOC. We are a place of opportunity and transformation, and we thank God for
every person whose life has been recreated and for all the people who have assisted in this ministry.
Today we are taking a giant leap as we begin the journey toward constructing an 8,500 square
foot youth center to allow us to reach more children and youth in our area. You can find more
information on the building including our video on the need by visiting our webpage:
www.houseofthecarpenter.com/youth-center.
The cost is $1.525 million dollars. A major part of the fund raising has been done. We are
asking the people of God to help us finish the good work that God has already started.
Included with this letter is a brochure describing how individuals, groups or the whole
congregation can become PROMISE Ministry Covenant Partners in supporting this effort. The methods
of involvement are based on our vows of church membership and include: prayers, presence, gifts,
service and witness. We invite you to review the list, share it with others and, if God so leads, tell us how
you will share in the ministry by completing the pledge card (which you can copy) and then returning it to
the HOC. We will be using our quarterly newsletter to update everyone on the progress of the Center.
Thank you in advance for all the support you have given that has allowed the HOC to be in
ministry for over 50 years and for the support that will carry us into the future God envisions for us.
Grace and Peace
