Becky Tate is a Piper Professor!!!

Tomball College’s nominee, Becky Tate, was chosen for this prestigious statewide Piper Professor Award

given by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation in recognition of superior teaching at the College level.

outstanding nominees for this award, you are the first winner from our college. We are proud to call you a

colleague!

CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS

The English, Humanities and Mathematics Division organize and host a memorable evening that we call

“Celebration of the Arts” each semester. This Spring, Celebration of the Arts was April 14th

, 2005 in the

Tomball College Black Box Theatre.

The evening’s program showcased the talents of our students, faculty, staff, and community members and it

was free! A highlight of the evening was the incredible jazz set performed by Jeff Norem, our newest

faculty member, playing the Electric Stick This free entertainment was performed by students, EHM

faculty members, and community residents.

As in the Fall 2004, this event was well received by our faculty and community residents. Don’t miss this

event in Fall 2005!

EHM Family and Awards!!!

Becky Tate is the latest Tomball College “Face in the Crowd” in the This Week section of Houston

Chronicle released on February 02/24/2005.

Suzanne Mattair – our Math Adjunct, was one of the three Adjunct Faculty members selected by the

Committee to receive the Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award. The Faculty Senate and PTK hosted a

Recognition Reception February 15, 2005 to honor the three Adjunct Faculty members.

Mary Pat Trenkle, for two years in a row, has won the 2004-2005 Published Writing Award with her

Review of “La Monte’e des eaux”. She received her award at the NHMCCD Awards Banquet on April 22,

2005.

Judy Harris was nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Cheryl Bates and Gwendolyn Young received their Five-Year Service Award

Rebecca Tate and Pamela Womack received their Fifteen-Year Service Award

“It is a pleasure to work with you, Becky!” Pat Stone

“ Please join me in congratulating them on receiving this honor!” Dr. Ray Hawkins

EHM Family and Student Awards!

EHM Faculty members are not only outstanding themselves but they also inspire their students to achieve

honors. The EHM students in the Music, Drama, Speech and Education fields continue to rise and shine.

We truly believe that behind great students, there are great teachers.

Sherri White and students –First Place award with “The Heidi Chronicles” at the Texas Community

College Speech and Theater Play Festival. Ten Drama students got either Superior Award or Excellent

Award in various fields.

Cheryl Bates and students – Four TC students were selected by audition for the Texas Two-Year College

All State Choir. The College All State Choir festivities culminated in a concert given for a large audience

of professional music educators at the Texas Music Educators Association Annual Conference and

Convention.

Clark Friesen, Van Piercy and students – Two TC students competed as a team in the Parliamentary

Debate event, one earned a Third Place and one earned a Fourth Place speaker award. Parliamentary-style

debate, compared with other forms of team debating, limits debaters to just a dictionary as their only

printed source of information. Debaters must rely instead on critical thinking, listening and speaking skills

as they attempt to show the superiority of their position.

Abraham Haje and Soccer team – the Tomball College Soccer Team won First Place in the Collegiate

competition league. If you read the Tomball Newsletter sent out recently from the Community Relation

Department, you will be amazed of the talent the team possesses. Way to go Coach Haje!

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH!

In Honor of the National Poetry Month, Katherine Reynolds, Melissa Studdard, and Catherine Olson and

two other faculty members read favorite poems on Tuesday, April 26, 2005. Everyone in College was

invited!

PRESENTATIONS BY OUR EDUCATION STUDENTS

Mary Ann Jackson, our Education Adjunct, invited the Dean, the Chairs and the Director to attend the

presentation of her students. She firmly believes with the support from all levels in College, the students

will strive for their best and become good teachers some day.

PRESENTATIONS BY OUR SPEECH STUDENTS

Clark Friesen invited all the Deans and representatives from Student Life to attend the presentation of the

Speech Communication students. By making their work available for use by campus representatives, the

students’ project will be counted as a service-learning project. Kudos to Clark!

TOMBALL/ WILLOW CHASE BOOKSTORE and EDOPTION

Laura Colwell started to send Fall 2005 Book Adoption information to the Tomball and Willow Chase

Bookstore by using edoption (eFollett.com). There are many areas that still need improvement, but Laura is

committed to helping us get adoption information to the Bookstore in a timely manner. We are hoping to

get the flexibility of sending in the Book Adoption on our Spreadsheet in addition to the edoption, so that

information is in both formats to avoid confusion as we all get the kinks out of the edoption process.

COURSE BUILDING – NEW WAY OF THINKING

Pat Stone and Melissa Pickering called a meeting of the key people who submit course building

information April 05, 2005. James Marshburn also explain R-25 – a Room Assignment tool. Our goal is

to build a more efficient course schedule for 05/06 now so that we can begin to recruit adjuncts and better

budget for our division’s instruction needs. Melissa put together a binder and she explained how to read the

time grid, how to assign course section numbers, and comment lines.

Pat promoted the slogan among EHM Faculty and Staff, “EHM is the super division where the redline is

not the deadline”.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION

“When I get an idea for a work I prefer to go directly to the canvas and bypass the drawing stage. If I don’t

have paint and canvas at hand I can always make a note, diagram or drawing as a key to the idea. This

Page 10: Becky Tate is a Piper Professor!!! CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS · Teaching classes, meeting the students in the office hours, solving students’ problems, grading, preparing course materials,

exhibition shows the result of the second action. When I travel I make drawings that may be later developed

into paintings. Sometimes years pass after drawings are made before the paintings develop. Good examples

of this progress are the drawings and paintings shown here that focus on the Temple de Valenciana in

Guanajuato Mexico” Richard Gordon Stout, Artist

Corner in our next Quarterly Report? Send submissions to Duy or Pat.

AT THE FRONT DOOR

by Jacki Strack

A woman sharing the troubles of her life with Mom was puzzled when Mom took her to the kitchen, filled

three pots with water and placed each on a fire. Mom added one item to each pot. She let them sit and boil,

without saying a word. In about 20 minutes, Mom turned off the burners, took out each item, placed them

in bowls, turned to her daughter and asked,

“What you see?”

“Carrot, eggs, and coffee”, the daughter replied.

Mom brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. They were soft. Mom then asked her to take an

egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg. Finally, Mom asked her to

sip the coffee. She smiled as she tasted and smelled its rich aroma. Mom then explained that each of these

objects had faced the same adversity…boiling water…each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong,

hard, and unrelenting but after boiling, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile, the thin

outer shell protected its liquid interior, but after boiling, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee

beans were unique. After boiling, they changed the water.

“Which are you?” Mom asked her daughter.

When adversity knocks on my door, how do I respond?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt, become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after

a hardship, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter

and hard?

Am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the

pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor.

Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
