THE SERVICE OF WELCOME

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE World Communion Sunday meditation on “Joyful, Joyful”

(https://youtu.be/TbQvV6eIUxE)

RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP Judy Cucinotta by Ana and Tod Gobledale, Global Ministries Associates

serving in the United Kingdom

One: We gather today as the people of God, as a community of Christ’s followers.

Many: We gather to share Word and sacrament, to discern the ways of faithful service.

One: Where in the world shall we serve our God?

Many: At home and school and business place – in this community and throughout

every land.

One: How in the world shall we serve our God?

Many: By working toward justice where there is oppression, by offering comfort where

there is pain, by sharing love where there is hatred.

One: Why in the world shall we serve our God?

Many: Because the Spirit beckons us, because Jesus calls us to enact our faith. Let us

now worship the one who calls us!

* HYMN #2 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,

God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee,

Op’ning to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

Drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee,

Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around thee,

Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,

Singing bird and flowing fountain

Call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,

Ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living,

Ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother,

All who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other,

Lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus,

Stars of morning, take your part;

Love divine is reigning o’er us,

Binding those of tender heart.

Ever singing, march we onward,

Victors in the midst of strife,

Joyful music leads us sunward

In the triumph song of life.

* UNISON PRAYER OF INVOCATION Adapted from the Africana Worship Book

Today, God, we confess our fumblings and failures in accomplishing unity, as we set aside

yet another day to remind ourselves of the task. On this World Communion Sunday, give

us eyes to recognize your reflection in the eyes of all whom we meet. Give us a mind to

accept and celebrate our differences. Give us a heart big enough to love your children

everywhere. We thank you for setting a table with space enough for us all! Amen.

3

* SPOKEN GLORIA from the UCC Book of Worship

Glory to God the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the

beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

*THE PASSING OF CHRIST’S PEACE Leader: The Peace of Christ be always with you.

People: And also with you.

THE SERVICE OF THE WORD

TIME FOR CHILDREN Joseph Coté

EPISTLE I Corinthians 12:12-22, 26 Judy Cucinotta

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though

many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one

body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit Indeed, the

body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, “Because I am not a

hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the

ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it

any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the

whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the

members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would

the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I

have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary,

the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable. If one member suffers, all

suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.

GOSPEL Mark 10:13-16

People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples

spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little

children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Realm of God

belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the Realm of God as a little child will never

enter it.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (Philip Newell, Casa del Sol)

Ground of all being, Mother of life, Father of the Universe, Your name is sacred, beyond

speaking. May we know your presence, may your longings be our longings in heart and in

action. May there be food for the human family today and for the whole earth community.

Forgive us the falseness of what we have done, as we forgive those who have been untrue to

us. Do not forsake us in our time of conflict, but lead us into new beginnings. For the light

of life, the vitality of life, and the glory of life are yours now and forever. Amen.

* UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION Judy Cucinotta

Each day we drink from your grace, mercy and abundance, gracious God. We return

these offerings to you now, praying that they may still the thirst and hunger of others in

need. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Communion liturgy adapted from an offering by Rev. Maren Tirabassi

* HYMN #393 One Bread, One Body (recorded by Sanctuary Choir)

https://youtu.be/W_pky0Ajumw

One bread, one body, one Lord of all

One cup of blessing which we bless

And we, though many, throughout the earth

We are one body in this one Lord.

Gentile or Jew, servant or free

Woman or man, no more.

One bread, one body, one Lord of all

One cup of blessing which we bless

And we, though many, throughout the earth

We are one body in this one Lord.

Many the gifts, many the works

One in the Lord of all.

One bread, one body, one Lord of all

One cup of blessing which we bless

And we, though many, throughout the Earth

We are one body in this one Lord.

Grain for the fields, scattered and grown,

Gathered to one, for all.

One bread, one body, one Lord of all

One cup of blessing which we bless

And we, though many, throughout the earth

We are one body in this one Lord.

INVITATION

Come to the table of One whose footprints are on tundra, desert, delta, the Sea of Galilee, bush

and forest and whose Good News speaks in Swahili, Spanish and Sign, Bahasa Indonesia,

Basque and Braille, Urdu, HTML and Te Reo Maori. Come to the breaking of rice cake, puto

and corn tortilla, the laying down of seema and wafer, the passing of unleavened Passover bread

and naan, and the pouring a cup of merlot or concord grape, salabat juice, atole, or coconut milk.

Come to a meal with a global guest list. There is no “save the date” – it is now.

WORDS OF REMEMBERING We remember the Creator fed the aurora borealis and ocean depths, all we see now that grows

and breathes, all that swims, swarms, slithers, all that runs, flies, leaps and loves.

5

We remember Jesus Christ played vintner at a wedding feast and taught the disciples never to

substitute anything like stone or snake when they feed the unhoused or hungry, a child, an elder,

a family camped under a bridge. We always remember a Passover in Jerusalem when Jesus

borrowed an upper room, soaked and scrubbed the tired feet and rough heels of others, and

explained that there is a hunger so deep no one can feed themselves, everyone must drink from a

hand of love.

Remembering is beautiful, but there is not much to taste in it. Let us fill our emptiness, by sitting

down here and now, distant in pews or virtual tenderness, as people are doing in all the world, to

eat and drink, be blessed and whole.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION God, bless the spoons, chopsticks, flat bread and fingers of all your children. Bless every

meeting of hunger and generosity. Bless our memories of food shared and our hopes for

food justice. Bless the peace of our common cup, the pieces of our broken bread, that,

everywhere and in this place sacred to us today, it may become a sacred meal, our pledge of

open table, a sign of our care for earth itself – fin, feather, scale and fur, wave and wind,

ground un-quaked beneath our feet and breath clear of wildfire. Amen

INVITATION All of you who hunger and thirst for a better life, for a deeper faith, for a better world, here is the

bread of life: feed on it with gratitude; here is the cup of salvation: drink from it and believe.

SHARING OF COMMUNION Leader: The bread is blessed and broken like the banquet of grace. Let us eat the bread.

Unison: Sharing love, we will never be hungry.

Leader: The cup is blessed and poured like overflowing tears and joy. Let us drink the cup.

Unison: Drinking deeply, we will never thirst.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (adapted)) Bountiful God, we give thanks that you have refreshed us by granting us the presence of

Christ. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and send us forth into the

world with courage and peace, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

* CLOSING HYMN #447 Thuma Mina (recorded by Sanctuary choir) https://youtu.be/jziJXG5vveY Thuma mina. thuma mina.

Thuma mina, Somandla.

Send me, Jesus; send me, Jesus;

Send me, Jesus; send me, Lord.

Lead me, Jesus; lead me, Jesus;

Lead me, Jesus; lead me, Lord.

Fill me, Jesus; fill me, Jesus;

Fill me, Jesus; fill me, Lord.

An evening with author Jon Kolkin

“Roots of Compassion, Seeds for a Balanced Life.”

Tuesday, October 19, 2021, 7 – 8:15 pm, in the sanctuary

Join us for an evening with Jon Kolkin, MD, who has balanced his career as a

photographer with his work as a physician for decades. As a physician, he has

twenty years of experience as an international medical volunteer. As a photographer he focuses on

projects that convey concepts central to living a healthier, less stressful and more balanced life. Dr.

Kolkin has exhibited in over 20 solo exhibitions in museums and art galleries throughout the United

States and abroad. He has also served on the faculty of Maine Media Workshops and is a frequent

presenter on topics related to life balance, the creative process and mindfulness.

Searching for peace within is an increasing necessity, and challenge, in our turbulent times. In

speaking of his work that led to this book, Jon will explore how and why key Buddhist spiritual

practices have come to inspire and enlighten people all around the globe, and how these speak to all

people beyond the boundaries of religious belief.

Workshop on Journeying through Grief with Grace 2021

A new course offering, to inspire people to move through grief

Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021; 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

An online Zoom offering; pre-registration required Join Deborah Cautela, fellow church members and community members for a one-hour mindful

meditation, movement and dance practice as we move through grief. Participants will Sit for 3 - 5

minutes, walk for 3-5 minutes and dance for 10 minutes, through two guided cycles. Participants

will explore how movement can heal; how we sometimes need help in our bodies to release grief;

how important this is to be shared; and, how allowing community support and community building

can strengthen us. Our time together will focus on the art of lament and help participants to:

identify the energies that flow in our body; anchor what keeps us connected to God and our soul;

love what activates, settles and grounds us; observe, with our minds, how we are embodied persons;

explore the suffering we know, discovering how we express emotions and hold grief, tears, pain,

laughter and joy, while opening ourselves to the fullness of our feelings.

After a period of practice and meditation, we will share together about the experience. Deborah will

draw on various resources, including William Blaine-Wallace’s book, When Tears Sing the Art of

Lament in Christian Community.
